The Hayes Code didn't start until mid-1934, so a *lot* of movies got made from 1927 - 1934 that would now be rated R. Though I didn't see it outside clips in a documentary, there's at least one movie in that year range about a woman who has a polygamous open relationship with two men.
Yes, they got away with violence with this and the Popeye cartoons, made by the same studio, that was until the 1960s, when content like this would be censored from TV.
