British Freshwater Fish (40 Species Underwater)

  • In Britain we have 53 species of freshwater fish (including non natives and fish that visit the lower reaches of rivers like sea bass, flounder) Over the past year I've been trying to film as many species as possible and will continue to do so.
    The other half of my film will be available as a DVD and include issues like eel decline, getting children to interact with nature and bringing fish to the attention of nature NGO's.
    Music by Kevin MacLeod
    Disclaimer: Pumpkinseed footage was shot in France but the species does occur in several lakes in the UK, Some species were also shot in tanks to get more detail then would be possible in the wild.

    Yes terrific video Jack, thanks! Your right Bob, the bloomin naturalists largely can't be bothered to show the majesty of the under water world, not of our native waters anyway. I love our fish species, their appearance is so soft and understated, unlike a lot of the gaudy exotic species from elsewhere. Nice accompanying music too :-)

    @portcullis5622 Před 7 lety

    Wonderful to see so many different species in their own element. Have you tried to find a burbot? I guess that you would have to go to a Lota lota trouble for that one!

    • @Chasingscalesspecieshunt

    • @portcullis5622
      @portcullis5622 Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the reply. Sorry, I just couldn't resist the "Lota lota" (ichthyology) joke! They are probably extinct in Britain (though not officially), but rumours still exist about the Yorkshre Derwent holding a small population. A live burbot hasn't been seen since the 1960's, but there are miles of the Derwent that hardly ever see an angler, so who knows? It is impossible to prove a negative, so I like to think that they could still be hanging on somewhere.

    any silvery darty fish with orange fin tips looks the same to me
    sometimes i can tell its a chub from the size but its very hard.

    • @Chasingscalesspecieshunt
      @Chasingscalesspecieshunt  Před 7 lety +1

      rudd have a up turned mouth and more golden colour to them, roach have a down turned mouth and silver colour while chub are larger as you say and a big mouth with a bronze colour and big scales.

    Ironically, the greatest aspect of many things not just in fishing, but in life, is the possible unattainabiity aspect, but now, with the high-technology tools, the underwater cameras, actually seeing the fish there, must take away the anticipation and even the joy of catching a fish. Just throw you line down here and pull them up. Isn't there something missing here?

  • @lukkyluciano
    @lukkyluciano Před 7 lety

    do the pumpkinseed fish get big in the uk? Do they eat the eggs of any of your native fish? In the US they like to feed on black bass(largemouth and smallmouth) eggs so the male bass will spend 24/7 guarding the bed from bluegill and pumpkinseeds and a lot of male bass end up dying
