Such a beautiful bassline, understated congas and a lovely jazz guitar solo. What's not to love?
Exactly
This was my selection, so glad a few people voted for it, thanks.
It is Bill playing congas. Ozzy is singing through a "leslie speaker"...whatever that is!, lol.. I love this as it shows, at times, Sabbath have more than one string to their bow. It's like you say, a real step away from the rest of this 1970 album. So trippy/spacey musically and geezers lyrics. Fits in with the era. Love Bill's conga's and Ozzy's engineered voice as you do. My favourite bit is Iommi's guitar. Laid back with a few little jazzy runs too. Probably my favourite solo of his. Shows, with the rest of the band, they're more than just heavy rock.
Found out recently that this song was used as a "wake-up call" for the 2020 Space X Crew Dragon.
Great reaction Dan and Sifa!
That was a fantastic choice and I really like your comment. Planet Caravan is one of my favorites. Black Sabbath had quite a few songs that were a little bit more experimental. Some of them were on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, which is my favorite album.
The Leslie speaker was very commonly used with organs. When most people think about a Hammond organ sound, that sound is a combination of the organ with the Leslie speaker and often some added distortion as well. Some bands used the Leslie with a guitar to a great effect and to much lesser extent for vocals too, just like in this song. One good example is the band "Yes". They used the Leslie with a guitar at least on songs "And You And I" (one of my favorites) and "Time and a Word". They also used it for vocals on "Astral Traveller".
Take care and have a great day.
A Leslie speaker is essentially a rotating speaker, famously associated with the Hammond organ. The phaser was developed to mimic it, but became something entirely different.
You've heard the scoop on what a Leslie is, and some other uses of it from others here. George Harrison was the first I was aware of to use the Leslie with guitar, on my favourite of several versions of the solo on 'Let It Be'. Eric Clapton used it, I'm sure on the bridge of 'Badge', one of the most iconic moments in rock, imo.
The first use of it on vocals, however, may be on John Lennon's 'Tomorrow Never Knows' from 'Revolver'. Lennon described to producer George Martin how he wanted his vocal to sound, "Like I'm singing from the top of a mountain," or something very like that.
Martin, always eager to accommodate and experiment with his band, rather than going for a dramatic reverb and/or echo as most might've done, ran it through the Leslie achieving a suitably distant and "mystical" effect, which definitely pleased Lennon.
@@Vimana thanks for the info🙂
@@mournblade1066 thanks for that info🙂
Released: January 7, 1971 (US) - A great album! So glad I was a teen ager in the '70s! 😁
Bill Ward - drums, congas on "Planet Caravan", Tom Allom - engineering, piano on "Planet Caravan"! I'm pretty sure it's Ozzy singing~
Best time for music in our opinion!
September 18, 1970.
I've always felt this track added great contrast to the album.
This is definitely a vibe. Always loved this song.
Sabbath did some wonderful soft songs and yeah,..why not more
It is Ozzy and they do a mellow song like this on all their albums. Very cool break to the heaviness.
Thanks John!
Dan and Sifa, the record producer (Rodger Bain) ran Ozzy's voice through a Leslie Speaker / Combo to give his voice that flanged vibrato-type sound, which was very popular back in the early 1970s. Yes, it is Ozzy's voice. Here is a CZcams link to the story about Planet Caravan and how that song came about....

Hope this helps out.
Ray
Thanks so much Ray!
Bill Ward is on congas, Ozzy is singing through a guitar amp, and I'm pretty sure it's Tony Iommi on the piano and leads, of course. I suggest Solitude (Iommi plays flute), Symptom of the universe (the second half of the song is island music) and Air Dance (metal jazz).
Thanks Mike G!
@@SightAfterDark , I have since read that Tony Iommi is also playing flute in the background on this. 😎
If Black Sabbath was the Grateful Dead.
They wouldn't have been as popular. Sabbath never tired to be something they weren't. Same with The Dead. Sabbath stayed in their lane, and the Dead stayed in theirs.
That's so Ozzy singing, how can you ask!
We’re on the crazy train!
Thanks for the reaction. If you know the back-story to Tony losing his fingertips then it makes total sense that this is Tony "channeling" Django Reinhardt; it's a jazz jam at the end. I didn't appreciate that in 1973 when I first heard the album Paranoid, but now I really get it.
We do know the story and yeah it does make sense! Thanks for watching Erik!
Great song and album. I got this album as my first ever as a Christmas gift and still have it. I’m 63yrs old. Hmmmmmm………
A gift that kept giving! Thanks for sharing Scot!
Used to be my least favorite track on Paranoid. But that was a long time ago. It's really grown on me.
SAME HERE!!! I NEVER GAVE THIS SONG THE CREDIT THAT IT DESERVES AND KIND OF FELT IT DIDN'T FIT FOR THE LONGEST TIME ON THIS ALBUM!!
BUT THAT WAS WHEN I WAS VERY YOUNG AND IGNORANT OF MUSIC!!! I WAS SO DUMB AS A MATTER OF FACT THAT I HAVE A VAGUE MEMORY OF ERASING OVER THIS SONG BECAUSE IT JUST DIDN'T DO IT FOR ME!! IF I COULD GO BACK I WOULD KICK THAT VERSION OF ME RIGHT IN THE ASS!!!
Same. But once I got over the "that ain't real Sabbath" reaction I've come to appreciate this track. Actually now my least favorite song on Paranoid is... Paranoid. Because it's been played to death on the radio and by every garage band in the last 50 years!
Thank goodness for time Bernard!
We still love paranoid, but you’re definitely right Sootikins!
Bill - 🥰!
For sure!
I am sure someone told you but just in case no one did it is Ozzy through Leslie speakers.
Yep, but thanks just the same Norair!
bands like this have a touch of geniues in them triped to this many times its hard to play on guiter aloha ps play budgie
This was/is a great song to make out to. Just saying.
😎
I've heard this before, but it wasn't Sabbath. Must have been a cover. Pantera?
Yup
We gotta check that out!
I’m a huge BS fan. But does anyone agree with me in thinking this song is not what you wanted when you dropped Paranoid on the turntable. I always skip it and jump over to Iron Man.
I think if you really want the full 70’s vibe then it’s essential listening 😊
I can't tell you how many times I've dropped the needle just for this song...
Yeah, I usually skip from Planet Caravan, to Hand of Doom. Amazing song.
