When I first watched this episode I was so shocked when Lars died. But I feel like him being brought back by Steven was a good way to show Lars’ character development.
More like I can't make Lars a good character so let's kill him and turn him into a new character

I felt like the crew killed a bad character like lars and kill him. Then made a new one which is pink lars.
Fun fact: lion died because he chocked on the key that he puked up in that one episode where Steven finds the tape for if he was a girl
All the “Off Colors” are takes on people with disabilities or those seen as the bottom of society. The Rutile twins are in regards to people with physical disabilities or birth defects. In their case, they’re conjoined twins.
Padparacha is representation for people with neurological conditions, which our society might say are “slow.”
Fluorite is a take on our senior citizens and the elderly, people who are demean just because of their age.
Rhodonite-just like Garnet-is a interracial/cross gem fusion.
The Off Colors gang are really cool imo
Fluorite is also a polyamorous relationship, which society doesn't really accept

To elaborate, "perfect" Sapphires can easily predict all kinds of future events...whereas Padparadscha is only able to announce events that have already transpired.
In other words, her "predictions" are a sort of delayed reaction to whatever's going on around her

I love her character sooo much lol
I would have loved to see Padparadscha's character explored more. Her "flaw" doesn't seem like much use at first glance, but if it's only setback is just "events that have already occurred" instead of future events, then it could still be a REALLY useful ability. Sapphires can predict many different future events, seemingly even ones they aren't directly present for. If Padparadscha's vision is equally as diverse then she would be great at investigating past events. Criminal investigations, debriefing or reviewing someone's performance, or a historian. Depending on the details of her vision, there is lots of ways it could be useful or of value.
Exploring that could be a way of showing 'off-colors' can still have valuable skills to offer, even if they don't fall perfectly into their expected roles.
Though there is also the matter of showing that she has value just for being her, and her value is not tied to some skill she does or doesn't have. Which seems closer to the theme the show was going for.
FYI: The Rhodonite is a fusion between a Pearl and a Ruby. And yeah, Padparadscha is a peach colored Sapphire
I think it's very sweet that although padparadscha knows that her perception is slower than everyone else, she still does her best to help and contribute. she's my favourite off colour, I love her.

Padparadscha's ability actually does come in handy from time to time. It's like the ultimate hindsight. Yeah, she only predicts things that just happened, but she does so from this neutral, all seeing viewpoint. That means if the people around her are missing critical information about something that just happened, she's able to point it out and clear up any confusion. I think it's only shown once or twice, but she actually is a useful character. It's cool that they really don't let any character in this show be totally useless. They all have their strengths and ways to help.

It's great for people who miss things especially in crazy situations. She's kind of like a status report and honestly it's pretty darn useful

The off colors were created to represent types of people who usually go unrepresented in cartoons and media, the Rutile twins are obviously conjoined twins, Rhodonite is someone with anxiety, Padparadscha is a child with special needs and Flourite is a polyamorous relationship.
This. This is the episode I was waiting for. The Off Colors are great, both as founts for fun facts about gemstones and as commentary on society.
Rutile is made from titanium oxide (TiO2). The name comes from the Latin rutilus (red), for fairly obvious reasons. 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. The Rutile twins aren't fusions or anything like that; they're basically conjoined twins. As you can see, their gem is bifurcated (Y-shaped), which is a real thing that happens sometimes with rutiles, and it's literally called "twinning". You can look at the Rutile twins as a metaphor for physical disabilities, since they've had this abnormal body structure since they first emerged and faced discrimination as a result. Symbolically, rutile is supposed to represent safety and calmness, so it's fitting that the Rutiles were the ones to find Steven and Lars and lead them out of harm's way.
Rhodonite is a fusion between a Pearl and a Ruby, and in real life, rhodonite is a manganese inosilicate (SiO3 with a bunch of Mn, Fe, Mg, and Ca). That's right, none of the aluminum that actually defines corundum crystals or the carbon found in pearls, but whatever. It's also named for its color, specifically from the Greek rhodos (rosy). That at least fits the fusion; ruby-like hue with a pearl-like luster. Around a 6, give or take 0.5, on the Mohs scale. Just like Garnet, she's the Gem equivalent of an interracial relationship, which Homeworld seriously looks down on. Symbolically, rhodonite is supposed to lower anxiety, which is hilarious because she's such a nervous wreck. Unlike Garnet, whose halves balance each other out, this is a hotheaded Ruby and an anxious Pearl who just magnify each other's pressure.
Unlike the Aquamarine that you thought was a Lapis Lazuli last time, you are correct that Padparadscha is a type of sapphire. So it's still Al2O3, but specifically sapphires with a light pinkish orangey color caused by traces of chromium and iron. The name comes from the Sanskrit padma ranga (lotus color), because the color resembles N. nucifera, the same plant that Padparadscha's hair kinda looks like. They're the most valuable non-blue type of sapphire, which is referenced in the show by Padparadscha being a precious cinnamon roll who must be protected. Where the Rutiles were a standin for physical disability, Padparadscha is one for mental disability, since her defective "future" vision renders her experience of the world delayed compared to those around her. Ironically, padparadscha sapphires are associated with moving forward in life.
Last but certainly not least is Fluorite, a fusion of six Gems. Made from calcium fluoride (CaF2). The name comes from the Latin fluere (to flow), because it was historically used to help liquid metal flow better when extracting it. Exactly a 4 on the Mohs scale, being the mineral that defines what a 4 is. The implication with Fluorite is that, like Garnet and Rhodonite, she's a fusion made of romantic love, and is thus the Gem equivalent of a polyamorous relationship. We don't know what her components are, but it's still pretty clear that that would be taboo on Homeworld. Plus, she can also be seen as a metaphor for the elderly who are cast aside, as aspects of her fusion-ness make her look like an old lady (her bottom pair of eyes looking like wrinkles, the fact that all six of her components need to agree on something make her act and talk slowly, etc.).
Not a Gem, but I really want to talk about Lars. First off, the fact that he hit a wall and died is a nice reminder of realism. Like, Steven is half-Gem, so he's tougher and more durable than a human, which is how he's been able to endure all the action he's been through in the series, so it's easy to forget while watching this show that stunts like that can be lethal for normal humans. Second, I always love Steven getting that realization of "H*** shit, Lion died". And lastly, look at the new tree in the Pink Space. The tree that was already there - Lion's tree - is a Vachellia nilotica, which is found all over Africa and the Middle East, as well as India. Meanwhile, Lars's tree is Pterocarpus indicus, the national tree of the Philippines. Because Lion is African and Lars is Filipino.
So yeah.

padparadscha is a kind of sapphire. She is probably the funniest character in the show imo
Now that we can FINALLY talk about it, my theory about lion is that he was the last of Rose's pride in the desert and when he died she brought him back. And since she was much stronger than steven, lion got powers ontop of being pink and having magic portal hair. Also, something crazy to think about: lifespan. Lion was a normal lion before Rose resurected him and gave him powers. If lion was around as an adult lion when the founders of beach city were alive, lion is hundreds of years old. That means he now is, seemingly, immortal with the exception of injury(as we've never seen proof for or against severe injury being able to kill him). Now that Lars has the same magic that lion has at a lower scale, we can assume he also will live far longer than any normal human would. He has an extremely slow heartbeat, can go a very long time without food or water, and, based on how lion only eats those "magic lizards" Lars might not even need nutrients anymore to live. Of course we will never have a definitive answer, but I think Lars and Lion are nearly or entirely unable to physically age, making them immortal.
Probably not even Lion can make a portal from Earth to Homeworld. He made one from the Earth to the moon, but it exhausted him. Good reaction!! Can't wait for the rest of the season!!

Lion and Lars are probably immortal now (or just aging very very slowly). We don't know if Lion was one of the lions that Buddy saw hanging around Rose hundreds of years ago or a more recently born lion, but male lions only live for 10 years, and Steven's Lion has to be older than Steven. They're not dying of old age anytime soon.

I'm sure someone from patreon already explained it by now, but for anyone else still confused: the reason why other gems can't go into Lion's mane is because they need Steven's gem (and prob Lion's permission, too). Pearl did try to enter in the Rose's Scabbard episode, but her hand couldn't go through and Lion just rawred at her.
Also, would it be a stretch to recommend the anime Land of the Lustrous/Houseki no Kuni after seeing Steven Universe? The story itself is a bit hard to grasp, but it's also got to do with living gems? 👀 (non-binary ones that is)

Your theory on Lars making portals is a good idea, but only in theory. Back when we were still getting to know Lion, he made a jump to the moon, but that seriously wore him out. I don't think Lion could warp from Earth to Homeworld, even with all of his practice warping like that, let alone Lars.

YES! Fucking finally, someone else that agrees that this is the best season. A large, popular take in the fandom is that the show fell off after 3- but I SEVERELY disagree. I think season 1 has more rough patches than good moments, season 2 wS good but they hadn't found their groove yet, and then season 3 is where the show genuinely found itself and came into its own. Season 5 is not only, IMO, the best season but it has the best episodes in total. And hell, at this point in your uploads you're only 4 episodes in and you already agree with me- i think that genuinely speaks to how good this session is.
padperacha's visions are still kind of useful potentially? if someone stole from you and you didnt know who, she might "predict" after the fact who it was. future vision is really inconsistant though with how much can be seen.

Gem who present abnormal physique, behavior, or abilities and have been deemed "defective" and "off-color" by Homeworld's strict standards and Caste System. In real life red corundum is known as ruby and all other colored corundum is sapphire, although blue is the most well-known.
Remember how hard it was for Lion to make a portal to the moon? Lion's portals can take him anywhere on Earth, but that seems to be the limit of his range. The moon is about 20 times further away than the other side of the planet. The next planet is like 50 times further away than the moon at the closest approach. And the next star system is about a million times further than that. Space is BIG. Pearl once said "You can see Homeworld's galaxy from here." That means it's not in OUR galaxy. So, it's at least 25,000 times further away than the nearest star. It's INCREDIBLE that Lars and Lion were connected so Steven could go in just a minute. Even the state of the art Homeworld ships seem to take somethink like a few hours (or maybe much more, it's never very clear) to make that trip.

Beware of Future
The born of "Lars from the stars" (captain Harlock reference) is one of the best plot twist of this show... everybody hated Lars till this.
But until you say it.. i didn't realize that Lars got all Lion Powers too...
Padparadscha sapphires are a member of the corundum family. However, these highly unique pink and orange stones are completely different from their blue counterparts.
At least since you're done with OG SU I don't have to worry about spoilers now lol
It's sad and kind of a missed opportunity that we never got to see Lars learn to use Lion's powers, that would've been so sick. Especially with becoming a space pirate and all, it would make sense because it's a quick getaway, cornered with nowhere to run? It's portal time!
Love these 4 episodes, got so many interesting nuggets like sewing the seeds of a diamond being behind Pink's shattering, Lion's origin, and Lars' redemption. Season 5 is fire.

Seriously though, if you're going to start another show, watch Infinity Train. I love all the shows people are suggesting, there is so much amazing animation right now. But if there was a show I would put right up there next to Avatar and SU in my heart, it's Infinity Train. It is just SO good, and it's topical how good it is with the recent drama around its removal from so many platforms.
