An exclusive interview has set the cat among the pigeons. L&T, which owns a 90% stake in Hyderabad Metro, has minced no words in blaming the Congress government in Telangana for low metro ridership. On the verge of exit, L&T director R. Shankar Raman stated that Congress's poll promise of free bus rides for women has drastically dropped metro ridership from 550,000 to 480,000, spiraling losses for the company, which already faces ₹13,000 crore in debt. In response to this interview, Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy sniped at L&T, saying that if the company wishes to abandon the Hyderabad Metro project due to the state government’s free bus fare policy, they are free to pull out. He asserted that the government will hunt for another interested party to operate it and confirmed that the free bus ride for women will continue. L&T has announced plans to sell off the Hyderabad Metro project by 2026, in which the Telangana government also holds a 10% stake. The issue also resonated with the Prime Minister in his no-holds-barred interview with India Today, highlighting the far-reaching side effects of freebies. As top-level discussions continue to salvage the Hyderabad Metro crisis, state politics around the issue simmers. Opinions on the ground, as found by India Today, were nuanced. While Hyderabad is desperate for a robust public transport system, the neighboring state capital Bengaluru seems to have improved its metro footfall in the past year despite a similar promise of free bus rides for women by Karnataka Congress. There's hope that the newly minted Telangana government can find a formula for all modes of public transport to complement one another rather than contradict.

1.Affordability - The prices are high and except for folks in IT, ordinary working class people will have to shell out a lot from their pockets to ride the metro.
2. Limited coverage - In a city that has expanded in every which way, the metro covers only 75 kms along major trunk roads. Metro doesn't even come into picture for folks from a lot of high density areas.
3. Lack of last mile connectivity - People will still have to complete part/most of their journey by other modes.
L&T should address these problems first before targetting the free bus scheme.

Every project and every investment have projections. L&T has an investment of 90% and pays huge interest on that capital. The interest is much higher than their income right now.
Covid was a big blow to the metro. Now the freebie scheme. The projections go awry, and the returns are not as expected. Everyone invests for profits in the future and so did L&T.

Totally false allegation. I travel daily in Hyderabad Metro. Most of the time we hardly have space to stand even after introducing free bus policy. Within few months again it might see hell. Metro trains are made to travel peacefully atleast by getting small space to stand. But L&T wants a model of Delhi and Mumbai local trains where people fight to enter the train.

L&T and BRS previously had a good understanding in building this. That's why they were only concerned and crying. Free bus is very good for poor ladies. But whoever can afford metro they are still using it, unnecessarily L&T making a ruckus and the reason for losses are different and L&T trying to blame government which is not good at all. Right from the beginning of this project there is a lot of skepticism involved. The previous government try to create an artificial economic boom which is actually not at all sustainable.
Free quality education, Free quality health service, free proper and true justice are the only three things that must be free. But these are three three things that are made business and rest all are made free. I'm from Hyderabad, today to balance the the free bus scheme, the land registration fees are hiked, tomorrow some other. Also in the same video its mentioned by a spokesperson that subsidy will be provided. I as a person who voted for congress ask why should even the subsidy be provided when we have an alternative. Instead of free ride, you could have at least reduced the fares by 25% - 50%, There could have been at least some revenue generation and no burden on government. These freebies are like lies what we all generally say and makes a big fuss at the end. One lie in the beginning and then add on to it to cover up this and when the truth comes it blasts. In previous government though Hyderabad metropolitan infra and private jobs improved but education, health, housing and justice was degraded. Hence me who voted twice BRS looked forward to wards congress. But now I only can say to government to not do repeat such mistakes. Also a few days back govt mentioned to improve govt schools quality and govt MLAs kids to study in them. If this happen then i believe that really quality education is being provided. Improve Universities education quality, provide enhanced laboratories for greater practical. Provide good education in Govt universities in such a way that companies rush to take students from govt universities. People now crowd up only in IT and others being neglected. So what about balance in groups. Many companies like HMT etc are on verge to closure in few years. Instead provide an opportunity to such companies that increase govt sector jobs. Let them run like private institutions - targets, growth etc. education, jobs, health services, housing, quality of life. During reconstruction of secretariat several trees were cut down and few were translocated, what about decrease in greenbelt that helps in improving air quality?

To put the end of unjustified free bees, women & transgender free bus travel in TS let the particular party give free, but central government should pass a bill bus or any public transport should not run with more than its seating capacity. For which RTO rules have to be followed strictly fine the bus traveling is extra fully loaded.

The most significant freebie in this country is states like UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, and Jharkhand drawing more money from the central pool than they contribute while states like Karnataka, Telangana, and TN get way less that what they contribute.
Imagine how much more these states would do (in shedding their liabilities) if they got a fair share of the pie.

in Bengaluru, only kannadiga women get free bus ticket but only 40% of Bengaluru population is kannadiga so rest of them rely on metro but in Hyderabad all women gets free bus pass

Also I heard very positive response from my maid and sanitation people with whom I interacted about this free service in city bus.Looks like govt will not take any aggressive decesion basing on metro feedback since the policy is their promise for entire teleangana. Let's hope that govt will comeback with some tax wave off or any alternative income methods. Thanks 👍
