  • The country of Turkey just changed its name to Türkiye. And, while I respect their desire to make their name more authentic to who they are, I think they missed a big opportunity.

As a Persian, I've always called this country "Türkiye" and wondered "Why do we call it Türkiye but it's written as Turkey on the map?"
and the answer was like what "Abdurrahman Tarakta" commented here.
also, let me break this word down
    • Turk / تُرک = is a name given to a special ethnic group of people how speak Turkic
    • Turkey / تُرکی =The word I wrote in Persian is pronounced like the word "Turkey", but it means "Turkic" Which is the language they speak
    • Türkiye / تُرکیه = is one of which countries where their people speak Turkic. We (in Iran) also have Turk too which speaks Turkic BUT in a different kind of dialect
Thus, It has always been "Türkiye" here in the East, But apparently the political powers had made a different decision about writing it on paper long time ago...

As a Turk living in Turkey, let me answer your question. The reason for the name change is not because it is a bird name. No one in Turkey has a problem with this. Because we call that bird "hindi" which means Indian:) This change is more related to the axis change. The administration sees this name as a name given by westerners. This name reminds us of the days when Turkey was a satellite of the west. This is not a western-oriented move, even though the advertisement shows that. It is more a matter related to the internal dynamics of the country.

Great input, thanks. I'm not surprised by what you're saying at all. I am surprised, however, at how the leadership of Turkiyë have handled the change.

And it's an American thing to eat a turkey on the holidays. There is no Thanksgiving outside of North America. Which makes it doubly weird to want to change the name for that reason.

‘Turkiye’ is the way it’s pronounced in Turkish, only different to non Turks.

I used 3 different ways to describe other than Turkey.
If I was to describe my country of origin I would say ‘Turkiye’ before the name change applied.

Ah, good to know. I think any country should be known by what it's people call it. However, I think the Turkish government didn't do as good a job as they should have rolling this out to the world.

Super random, but do you know how crazy their currency crisis is? You can go look up the USDTRY exchange rate and TRY is becoming extremely weak compared to all other currencies. Just found it super fascinating. If you bought USDTRY yesterday you would have had 101% today😂 But ya at least they have a new name and the country itself is beautiful and the people are very kind

I had no idea! Look, the country has real problems. Erdogan practically imprisoned all of his political opponents back a few years. I can’t imagine they’re able to keep their economy strong under such a strong fist. Do you happen to know what’s causing the drop?
