There are two types of isekai or tensei:
1. Killed by a truck
2. Not killed by a truck
Jonathan Isip in other words
1. Konosuba
2.Not Konosuba
Correction:
1. Killed because you panicked about dying to a truck which caused you to die.
2. You die of some other cause that doesn’t sound stupid when you say it out loud.
So does this mean Minky Momo and Excel Saga are isekais? :D

Finally!
You mean the best isekai
Isekai is a start over. Do what you couldn't in your life in another world. By the time you arrive you are not bound by anything. You are truly free and can take whatever route you want to take. This is why I deem Isekai appealing.
LedoCool1 I just like seeing characters react to their surroundings. ReZero really captured the danger of not taking this world seriously. A lot of isekais have characters that try to be super cautious and calculating to make sure they don't end up like Subaru would without return by death lol
Escape from this god awful world
You can do that now if you had any willpower to go against your base needs. A realistic Isekai would be a underachieving loner transported to another magical world where he continues to be an underachieving loner.
plainlake i just want a world where ppl DO NOT constantly want to go to the fucking ends of the fucking world to tear down each other and what they enjoy

The oldest isekai I know is Dante’s inferno. This is no joke. It stars a Mary Sue who is transported into a fantasy world where he meets famos people like a f‘caking self insert. Let's also not forget that The Wizard of Oz was the also among one of the world's first _isekai_ adventures, and Dorothy the one of the first Western _isekai_ protagonists.
How about Guliver? Or the Ulysees? Rhe trope is oooold.
The Odyssey took place in our world, Gulliver is on the same border, Alice in Wonderland is a mental journey, yet Dorothy herself defines the modern definition of _isekai._
In the book Dorthy doesn't dream, she literally goes to Oz, which is described as being in Africa but is never confirmed. She gets flown back to Kansas at the end and walks like 5 miles to her house. Oh and the Tin man beheads 40 wolves. It's incredibly violent and dark and not happy at all.
+Mr. Cat The point is not about.wakingbup in another universe, though Alice fulfills that too. Its about taking an unknown place filling it up with a weird society than dumping avrage joe into it.

devil is a part timer... and it's already done long time ago
Re creators
basically half the premise of any of the Fate series, with the whole "heroes from a era long past"
Lots of them has been done. Like Zenki.
Oh My Goddess too
here's an Isekai idea I would like to see. Male Teenage Protagonist™ arrives in a fantasy world...and promptly dies (because he's an idiot)....is not resurrected. BUT the artifacts he brought with him (cell phones, note book, etc) alter the politics of and the fate of the world he came to; who's residents may then find a way to visit the traveler's home world.
arnold jayeola called????
That's a really good twist. I wouldlove to read/watch something like that, but I thinks it would be cooler if it's not a fantasy world but a regular medieval setting, and the protagonist is a mage from a fantasy world who messed up they teleportation spell. That way, the artifact could have a much greater effect on the world around him.
That is.... a genuinely great idea! No joke, that would be amazingly cool. Would be interesting to see what modern technology like a cellphone could do to a society that has never seen such a thing before. The opposite could also happen, like a sorcerer comes to a world like ours and gets run over by a truck but then someone finds his magic wand......
interesting, I would like that
As long as they promote it as a normal Isekai so it is a huge WTF moment rather than pulling a Fate of the Furious.
What about Cory in the House? That anime in which the protagonist named Cory ends up in what would be for him like another world: that of the high class life in the White House. Makes my eyes watery just by thinking about it.
Of.course.Cory in the House! One of few anime that's possibly better then the manga.

Concept: An "isekai" anime involving characters from a fantasy RPG being transported to modern day Japan. No action, no harems, no magic, just RPG characters learning to adapt to contemporary society.
JacksonEbert That kinda sounds like The Devil is a Part Timer
Dawson Heymans Yeah sorta, they do have magic though
I loved that The Devil is a Part Timer, nice comedy, and action.
So, on Jackson's Concept: It would be good if those who are powerful all end up in modern-day Japan only to realize that all those powerful masters and role models they looked up to currently live a *humble life as normal old men/women*.
Now will this cause it to become a Comdey or a psychological thriller which continuously plays on their mind (dark side of earth?) or power up in their persuasive language usage (AKA Pro-Salesman I can see that turn into a comdey as fierce fight begins between those rivals and somehow the anime makes it an action scene with no action...)
you can call that a Reverse Isekai anime, like The Devil is a Part-Timer!

Ironically there are a few things that could still be done with the idea:
1: Isekai into a sci-fi setting with giant robots, lasers and suchlike.
2: Reverse isekai where a villain lands up on Earth, finds the game he's the villain of, and is rather offended at the whole "being portrayed as the villain" thing and goes after the game creators. Have him interact with critics who go on about how lacking in personality the game's antagonist is, how stale the plot is, etc...
3: The hero is just standing there! - What happens to a game world where the "hero" who is supposed to be saving it, gets bored of the game and leaves it unfinished?
2 was done before in re: creators and 1st one probably was done in a mecha anime that included another world.
1. has been done literally 15 years ago in Muv Luv.
2. I guess hasn't really been done, but Re: Creators did something similar

Gustavo Oliveira Martins it's common sense actually
Gustavo Oliveira Martins fuck. I can never unread that
Yeah, next time I hear people whining about how SAO is to blame for this genre, I'll make them remember, THIS is how it started
And that's probably not even the 1st one. Many of Vernes work had elements of Isekai, but was just set in unexplored parts of our world. Carter of Mars and Flash Gordon are both Isekai, just with a sci fi setting rather then fantasy.
Really, what we call isekai is just a Japanese word for a genre that has been around forever (as Gigguk notes) all over the world. It's just become it's own subgenre in anime because of how quick that kind of story gets formulated, codified and copied over there.
+Azmodeus87 Its not a genta. Its step three of the monomyth: crossing the treshold. Its in some capacity inevitavbly part of almost all stories.
Really glad that you talked about Light Novels. It would be really awkward talking about the genre Isekai without mentioning them.

Kinda surprised this didn't mention digimon, it's at least the first anime I remember where the protagonists get transported to an explicitly digital world - not just a fantasy world, but one that works like a computer. It's got monsters and fantasy elements sure, but there's game mechanics in there too with the levels and death not being permanent. Obviously it's not a modern isekai, it's a kids' show using the monster of the week formula, but my love for digimon is what made me excited for SAO when it first came out, before that turned out to be a disappointment. It's also the reason I'll never turn down anything just because it's technically isekai, even though I'm not a fan of the modern tropes at all. I just really think being transported to another world has so many incredible possibilities, and they could be explored so much better if there wasn't such a focus on the harem aspect. Even if you have to stick with the male teenage gamer protagonist (ugh), at least surround him with a diverse group of people with different interests, skillsets and reactions to the world they're transported to. Modern isekai are really only relatable to a specific sort of people (male gamers), and I don't belong to that group, so even though I love the concept, most shows are set up to just not be my cup of tea, which is incredibly disappointing, because I'm a huge fan not just of digimon, but also escaflowne, inu yasha, and the older stories like alice in wonderland and narnia.
Digimon was a bit more than a monster of the week. It had actual story arc, unlike american cartoons.
Vaidas Šukaukas
Still had Isekai-ish elements

Re:0 is the best Isekai
Unlike others, you do feel hard and impossible to get through everything as the protagonist
Neiamenase It certainly is great, but I think if you are just looking for a show to watch casually, Slime is really enjoyable. It has an OP protagonist but the protagonist is really down to earth and makes really smart decisions. It’s not constantly picking fights over everything. If you don’t like that, there is also the sit-com style of KonoSuba hat really just makes you laugh and enjoy the cast.
Like, seriously, you can't even begin to compare Re:zero to any isekai. If you do, you'll find out that the anime you compared with Re:zero has such a shallow plot that it's just embarassing. Sure, Rising of the shield hero wasn't trash but it certainly wasn't god tier isekai either. The plot is too shallow in comparison to Re:zero
Crayxielあや tell me. What is the plot of rezero? There is no goal. Its not a complex story. Subaru just tries to survive and save others
nynks 1 They completely scrapped op protagonists in re:0, and it’s pretty unique. They mess with your mind pretty nicely, intricately entangling emotions. If you ask me the plot is practically the world, there even is lore on other people that came from japan which is really interesting and the magic system is really well designed. It’s on par or even better than the likes of overlord.
@@someoneowo9822 It is a complex story. Any attentive viewer would know that. If you really paid attention to Re:zero at all you would have so many questions left unsolved because season 1 is pretty much just world building. Questions like:
1. What happend to the royal family?
2. Why does the dragon not want to protect the kingdom if there are no royal family descendants?
3. What is the role of Sword Saints?
4. Is the Sword Saints supposed to slay the dragon if in any case it decides to deviate from its role? (This is implied in one of the earliest episode that the Sword Saint does not want to draw his blade because it is not the "Destined Time")
5. Why does subaru have a connection with the jealous witch?
6. Why does the owner of the mansion (Emilia's Advisor, lol forgot his name) seem so sinister and why does everytime something bad happens he is not around?
7. What is Emilia's connection to the jealous witch?
8. Why does puck seem so all powerful?
9. Why is Beatrice so neutral when it comes to situations that involves the jealous witch?
10. Why did subaru get reincarnated into that world?
Imo, the main goal of the series is to tell a grand mysterious story surrounding the jealous witch. It is a very interesting lore-deep dark fantasy isekai that all other isekai should look up to.
This whole Isekai really reinforces the escapism our generation is obsessed with. We really really really hate the reality we are in. Like holy shit it’s depressing.
HaYlEeXx19 That is not necessarily true. I'd back my claim, but I don't feel like writing an essay using a touch screen. I'll do it if you reply when I get to a computer.
Do it. I want to know what you think of all this because I agree with HaYlEeXx19
Escapism has always been a thing, it's just that nowadays more and more people experience escapism through mediums like animation or video games.
Before computers, people still read fictional books, and before books were a common thing, people would still have fantasies, but they were mostly self-made.
Some people go to other countries just to escape from their daily, stressful lives... even if it's just for a week or two.
HaYlEeXx19 accurate
HaYlEeXx19 I'm actually pretty OK with my life and how it's going and I've been in two bike Vs auto's Monday to monday in a row and I lost a car I got as a gift after said accidents to a high schooler. Would I mind the Isekai experience happening to me? No? Do I wish for it? Pray for it? Losing my fucking mind over it not happening to me? Nope my life is worth living cause it's mine and mine alone.

Seriously, those are the type of cliches that needs to die, hard and fast. Many stories and character development suffered from being static because of characters who are like god-likes. For anyone wondering which song starts playing at 10:27 and later on can be heard at 10:47:
It's Fatboy Slim - Ya Mama
Although, probably no one cares... Well, I tried..
EDIT: I corrected the name of the song since I made mistake, although it could have been found if searched by it's "other name".
For some reasons it calls images of Abenobashi in my head every time I hear it.
I mean, the reason is clear.

Okay I'll admit you were slick with the way you synced SAO with Daft Punk. I smiled. You get a Like.
Yep
Examples of "twists" on Isekai I'd like to see.
- Typical Isekai but in a world completely devoid of any humans or humanoids(ergo harem would not be a thing).
- Isekai where the protag is actually summoned to be a part of someone else's harem(either as a male or as genderswap).
- Isekai where it's not actually another world and the guy's simply transported to some random place in the middle of modern Africa/Australian outback/Polynesia/etc.
- Isekai to a dystopian future where the protag needs to deal with being an illegal immigrant.
- Isekai where there's some dark catch to the protag gaining Gary Stu power(a la Madoka's Soul Gem).
- Isekai where the protag becomes a dog/cat/horse whatever mundane animal in a fantasy world.
- Isekai where the transported guy is only a support(preferably a comic relief) to a proper better hero who was already from that world to begin with.
- Isekai where the "new world" is even blander than the previous world the protag came from.
- A story of the protag having failed his quest in the isekai and was sent back home, where he longs for the "better world" while everyone else around him thinks he's crazy.
- Isekai to Jojo's world.
And oh wow I came up with all these in less than 10 minutes. Way to go, light novel authors.
Cool ideas, and I think some of the ln have used those ideas already (aside from the last one which I really wanna see cause #jojo4life)
The Mudane animal reminds me of Gulivers Travels, explictly the civilized horse society, and bestial human... mobs.
Reito Shizaki actually, there is an isekai where the protagonist was supposed to be a hero but somehow turned out to be the bad guy. It's not an anime, but I'm pretty sure it will be adapted into an anime, it's called "Tate No Yuusha No Nariagari".
Isekai like GATE but this time it's grimdark medieval magic fantasy world versus grimdark Wolfenstein style dystopian world.
Reito Shizaki another one would be if a random Joe got transported to another world but becomes a bad guy

Hit me in a place I forgot existed. Outside of the MMO I haven't played a FF since FF9 was released.
Which was 16 years ago, and now I feel old.
Holy shit I thought I was the only one who noticed
7:16 March of the Dreadnaught (XIII)
8:38 Prelude (VII)
9:32 Chocobo theme (XV)
It was driving me nuts that I couldn't remember March of the Dreadnaught.
Then I remembered that I had ripped the soundtrack on this computer and looked through most of the tracks till I found the damn song. XD
There is an Isekai FF though, speaking.
One is the terrible FF Unlimited anime, the other is a modern Isekai manga.
Made in Abyss was the best fantasy anime to come out for such a long time.
And it sold like trash. I hate this world.
Anime Strike hardly has a voice with the anime they grab so really good anime obtained by them such as Made in the Abyss and Welcome to the Ballroom get the short end with the lack of exposure they have compared to the following CR has and the amount of exposure they give the shows they have. It *really* sucks but that's business I guess :(
TheIceLurker and then you realise Kirito from Sao is ranked higher than Guts from berserk in my anime list just because sheer popularity.
Yup I definitely see your point
TheIceLurker Nah mate. MiA as far as I keep up with Blu-Ray sales made near 5,000 copies for it's first volume, which is decent. Though Princess Principal sold a couple thousand more.
Tsuntenshi plus ballroom doesnt have the resources it needs to really shine since production ig is working on haikyuu season 4
IKR its so fucking bullshit its killing me inside
One of my favorites in the isekai genre is Red River. It's a manga, with a female protagonist, set in ancient Babylon with magic. It's fascinating and probably won't ever be adapted at this point, but it makes me wish that more female protagonists appeared in isekai, and ones NOT based on dating games.
The thing is, the concept of Isekai, in a broad sense, is an immensely powerful genre for character or concept focused story telling and liberal use of symbolism. Stories like Alice in Wonderland, Chronicles of Narnia, the Wizard of Oz, and anime like InuYasha, Now and Then Here and There, Familiar of Zero (not without fault but with what ends up being one of the best anime romances available if you can stick through the harem slap stick), the Twelve Kingdoms, and Escaflowne (instant classic mecha) are largely great examples of quality Isekai because they tend to take normal people and put them into exceptional situations.
If a story is easier to immerse yourself in when you have a relate-able protag, then there's probably no fantasy genre easier to immerse yourself in than Isekai. And what's more, you get to appreciate the characters coming to terms with the fantastical setting they find themselves in, even as the setting allows the writer to explore themes or concepts in ways you never could in a story set in our world, and then give them to you through the eyes of someone who IS from our world, and so reacts in a way that you couldn't convincingly have someone react if that character was native to the setting.
In other words, Isekai is fundamentally about clashing the reasonable and familiar with the fantastical and strange, and embracing the subtle juxtaposition to tell not only a story, but usually to explore a theme.
So what's wrong with the waves of Isekai coming out in recent years? Their fantasy is methodical, defined by rules early on, and hinges on familiarity with the setting. This tends to mean the setting itself is the "standard fantasy game setting" complete with the writer's own take on "standard fantasy game rules". There is nothing fantastical about video games and their settings in the context of stretching the imagination of the viewer, especially when you are striving to evoke that kind of recognition of the setting from your viewers. When the reasonable and familiar clashes with... the reasonable and familiar, your setting falls flat. What's worse, your characters' development feels fabricated, and if you make the mistake of painstakingly spelling out all the rules about how the magic works and how the character's stats develop, you sound like someone bragging about the game they played last night, not like a writer trying to immerse you in their unique world.
Some stories manage to save themselves with a clever plot and by making the right decision in playing the setting cards close. Re:Zero redeems itself as an entry into the painfully mainstream sorts of Isekai by having an excellent plot and REALLY taking that old saying about making your protagonists miserable to heart. But there it is: It's about exploring a theme or concept, asking the question, "what happens when some just dies over and over again, and what happens when dying doesn't give them what they want anymore?"
Isekai is exploration of the bizarre and abstract, a lesson in out of the box thinking and artistic creation, even if it's just by breaking down a character to build them back up. But that's okay, because good Isekai centers around deconstruction and reconstruction of a concept, usually through a person or people, by inserting the familiar (what must be broken) into the unfamiliar (what breaks it). Isekai STRIVES off of the tension of development, and that tension requires a unique setting. When you create a cookie cutter Isekai with one unique quirk that doesn't redirect the whole show/movie away from the beaten path (smart phones are NOT unique enough when they are just another god mode mcguffin), then you've failed to appreciate what makes Isekai, as a genra, excellent.
Lt Muffler it would be ok to see the main character struggle in this fantasy world (like in Re:Zero) but most of the time he becomes overpowered from the beginning and turns into a godfigure who gets all the bitches. In this case it's just uninteresting for me
Holy sheet, this guy deserves top comments.
Fantasy has staying power because its an actual genre while Isekai is more of a gimmick. Gimmicks are fun for a while and producers of this gimmick think, "Hey, people are eating this up, lets flood the market with it!" but then the market gets over-saturated and the gimmick that was fun is now disdained/loathed.
Fantasy, however, is a genre so broad that I don't think it could ever really fade away completely. It may lose popularity for a time but it always comes back. Fantasy is now coming back as people realize there are other, more interesting ways to use fantasy than "an otaku gets transported to another world."
Fish out of water trope which Isekai in essence is, while not a genre is also wildly applicable. The problem lies with the fact that it begun to come with a lot of bad elements because the most succesful works had them.
I need no channel youtube!
Exactly! The combination of a fantasy setting + fish out of water trope could be used in very different ways, but because of SAO popularity this combination has died, in an artistic sense: basically it has stopped evolving. The shows that have followed this formula until now didn't do it to experiment, but to profit on the familiarity a wide audience already had with SAO, and so they took many other elements, making them unoriginal (see the protagonist always being a gamer and the harem element).
Basically money is to blame, like always.
I think I like Isekai because I (and many other gamers, otaku, cosplayers, etc.) would LOVE to be transported to some fantasy world. It's oddly ALWAYS satisfying watching main characters going to fantasy worlds and seeing how it plays out. Let's face it, a large majority of anime lovers are outcasts, shy and shut-ins because they dislike the world they live in now. So, capitalizing on a multitude of different characters going to different fantasy worlds is always a guaranteed MUST WATCH in the anime community. Did I word this right? It's late. Good video, as always.
> would LOVE to be transported to some fantasy world. It's oddly ALWAYS satisfying watching main characters going to fantasy worlds and seeing how it plays out.
it's called escapism bruh
Escapism at its finest.
Real life are the best. With real money, power and influence.
What you said is correct in its entirety.
Basically escapism but that goes for all anime for me
Funny thing is 90% of anime fans if transported to another world would probably die extremely quickly.

Digimon is still the best Isekai anime for me
Someone recognises the best. xD
I can't believe he forgot
YES!
Digimon is basically a cross between traditional Alice in Wonderland type Isekai and the “virtual vs real world” subgenre of Cyberpunk which was brought in the anime landscape by Serial Experiments Lain. The latter already having the premise of SAO in it (kids trapped in a deadly online game) albeit as a subplot.
Digimon is an isekai I can get behind. Good shit right there.
Youjo Senki was the recent Isekai anime that did the most refreshing take on the genre (and was amazing in general) and I was surpised you didn't mention it. It did so many things differently with its war setting, older male/young girl protagonist, dark tone etc. I guess it wasn't a fantasy so it doesn't count? The World War setting in particular was super unique. Perhaps thats how to keep the genre fresh, just take out the fantasy part. Have MC-kun transported into a Gundam setting or the world of Hero Academy instead of another boring, generic RPG land.
In the end the Isekai genre is just that, a genre. It being good or bad will depend on how you build your world. In most cases you could even say that Isekai is a subgenre of Fantasy (Even in Youjo Senki, as the introduction of magic already makes the new world a fantasy one, even if it's only a few characteristics)
Youjo Senki was pretty much my favourite series of that season (even if imo there were many good series in that season).
The one i'm waiting for is Tate no Yuusha no Nariagaki (The rising of the Shield Hero), that also has a pretty long time around and only now they are doing an anime (WN is done and LN is in the way iirc).
I have one problem with Youjo Senki : why does it have to be an isekai ? Just take any soldier of that war, create a resurection and voila. This is a bad isekai. That doesn't mean that the story is bad, just that this particular point is useless.
Actually, it wouldn't have the same appeal. The MC is transported to another world because he dissed "God." The whole point of him being transported was to get the MC to have faith in that being. That's the element that makes the isekai point relevant. Trying to change the main character's origins changes the entire story we are following. We didn't watch it because the story of war was good (it is average). We watch it to see how our character faces the challenges that the "God" is providing to make the MC convert.
In addition to what Ace said, a good portion of what makes the show great is Tanya using her knowledge of the future to navigate the war and part of the theme of the show was that it takes a lot of the same skills to be a good soldier and a good salaryman.
Alcyon Eldara Actually, that's the appeal. Tanya fights against being X is and thrown into body of a child (which is not practical). She used what she has in the previous life to become what she is now.
If Tanya just a high ranked soldier in that world, I'm not sure she will meet being X and tries to defy him. Even if she did meet him, her reason for survive and revenge isn't that big compared to suddenly being born in war world.

Murasaki No Kami sammmeeee
Murasaki No Kami inuyasha? Never seen it I’m also new to the anime community but enjoy subbed over dubbed any day the first one I watched was no game no life
well first, welcome and good choice
basically Inuyasha is about a girl named Kagome who falls down the well in her family's shrine and ends up in feudal era Japan, which is plagued with demons. she meets a half demon named Inuyasha, who was in a relationship with Kikyo, a powerful priestess charged with guarding an all powerful jewel. Kagome is Kikyo's reincarnation, meaning it's now her job to protect the jewel. chaos ensues shortly after, causing the jewel to split into over a hundred shards and scatter across Japan. it's up to Kagome and Inuyasha to travel the land and put the jewel back together.
the story is a romance, comedy, fantasy, drama; that was written in the late 90's early 2000's, but i think it's aged fairly well. there are some aspects of the story that many find annoying, the occasional plot hole, and a love triangle that I personally hated. but if you can look past those flaws, you'll find a story that I would recommend to anyone. if only so they can understand what anime from the 90's felt like

"Fantasy dies out"
You can hear J.R.R. Tolkien laughing from his grave.
Fantasy is as old as humanity. Even in ancient times, people had myths and legends about fantastic creatures. For example, Germans know "Die Nibelungensage" or the fairy tales collected by "Die Gebrüder Grimm". These are all fantasy stories. So if you want to beat on anything, it's that fantasy will never ever die out.
Why you speak rammstien language?
@@kr5020 Because I am a german. 😉
welll you are right, just to nitpick a bit, there is a distinction between fantasy and epic. the first existed, as you said, but its stories were super diversified and contaminated with other genres. That aside, usually talking about Fantasy genre, we're thinking about the modern one from about XIX century on that got immensely jumpstarted to literal dignity by our best guy "Tollers" The JRRT himself.
You know, it's a bit ironic, what you said, cause I remember someone wrote "Tolkien created AND killed the modern High Fantasy genre" ... in a way it's false. And it's true (lolwhat? xD). Sure it grew more and more, but I honestly I don't know a author who tried the kind of literary language and style Tolkien used. In that sense, I think he killed fantasy... THAT way of making fantasy (I guess most authors are even too intimidated to try it). JRRT's work peculiarity is that rather than having a modern fantasy style narrative and language, it uses one that's a hybrid with the original
Shonen is just late to isekai party. Shojo has been doing that since 80s. That is why you find that early isekai series usually have female protagonist. My favorite is Kanata Kara (From far away), Sorawa akai kawano hotori (Red River) and Fushigi Yugi.
The only problem I have with modern isekai story would be the same with the problem I had with old trapped-in-video-game story. They were not really a game, just a generic fantasy world. Nowaday, they are not really a proper fantasy world either, just a game. If you want to invest so much time on RPG-ish detail of your world, make it trapped-in-video-game story instead, please.
i only watch fushigi yuugi and really have adulty theme especially when they have s*x while at the time i watching with my mom lol. scared me out of my life
Yeah, another bizarre thing is that, back then, people usually made a fuss about ecchi shonen being inappropriate to kid or teen or whatever. In fact, many Shojo had way more bed scene than even a full fledged hentai. However, they were still getting away without 18+ rating because they were claiming they were showing it romantically and not erotically. Feminist at it's best. lol
PS. Kanata Kara and Red river don't have anime adaptation though, only a manga. I still recommend them because it is pretty damn good.
Made In Abyss is definitely a must-watch!

PS: I also liked you, because you're kind of a genius.
For real though, I think it should be taken as an example of the possibilities with Isekai, because it feels nothing like other Isekai shows, yet when you think about it you end up realizing that a cast of relatable characters from the "real word" go to another world, I think it would be cool to see some Isekai show have the back and forth between worlds and the more equal cast (The google heads may always be the protagonists and be more important to the story than other characters but not by a huge margin)

Hanazeve Caradhina is one of the best songs I've ever heard in an anime.
Problem with Japanese anime studios is lack of originality. If one show from a particular genre becomes a commercial success, countless others soon follow suit season after season until it becomes a trope or an unintentional parody of itself. Just look at all the siscon garbage coming out these days as another example.
Bryant Johnson so essentially 'follow the leader' mentality. A good parallel would be the wattpad fanfic 'a 100 days in anime world' in which after it blew in popularity, most 'anime world' themed stories with even the exact same writing style used in these 'new' stories
Bryant Johnson can say the same with American horror movies :/ it's all the same new house, ghost possess little girl, random people with technology so I don't find them scary at all these days
That's any market. We're dealing with that issue in the game industry at the moment.
That works with every business, it's not just an anime thing. Just look at hollywood, with the flood of superhero movies now turning into a flood of expanded universes. Look at video games, with all the Dark Souls clones in the last years. Or again, "pop" literature: Twilight started a new wave of supernatural YA novels, Fifty Shades spawned a world of softcore porn novels... if there's profit to be made, business will milk any cow passing by.
I mean, Isekai is pretty much originality in itself. A whole new world is created with different rules, different people, different everything. Just because the premise is the same doesn't mean the content has to be.
the matrix was the first one in reverse
Wait how come he didn't mention Digimon, a whole group of people left to another world

Kai Snowleopard I was gonna mention digimon too cuz the kids go from the real world to the digital world
I want an Isekai that happen in Steampunks or The Industrial Revolution type RPG,the MC isn't a genius and didn't have a genius teacher or family members to teach them the basics,The MC will meet strong aquintances his/her age along his/her adventure that show him/her the reality that he/she not a genius, information from MC old worlds will be useful in his adventure but surprise surprise it wasn't from games but from real world fact science like how clouds form lightning, and finally the MC must work hard to get the affection of his/her love interest no magically make them fall in love to the MC.This series should not be about how nice to live in an other world but about the change in your life starting from you not the world you live in
It isn't Isekai, but if you want something steampunk-ish, and really cool, go watch Princess Principal. Oh my word is it good.
Alternatively, I'm really surprised that he didn't talk about Youjo Senki at all, being that it's such a crazy isekai that uses such a unique world.
Can't forget the most important ingredient, the massive amounts of fan service. I know it's super prominent throughout anime as a whole but this genre seems to have a higher frequency
I really don't want to think of Alice in Wonderland and Narnia as Isekai books, but every time I talk about them I remember it
My fav Isekai is probably Divine Comedy, but sure it have problems. The obviously one, is that the main character(this Dante guy) is the author self insert. Not only that, but the author put his waifu as romantic interest for him, just to make shit weirder.
one could argue about that being an isekai
zhatus 😂😂😂
Holy fuck I never noticed
An Isekai where the protagonist wasn't an otaku, but some successful business man or something. Or a girl.
Super Pony 3 Tanya the Evil I guess. But it's not your average isekai.
Overlord Ainz wasn’t a otaku, he’s an adult close to 30 and got a job
I suggest Mondaiji Tachi. The main character is a young genius boy who has super powers in the real world. He is then transported to a world called Little Garden. It is also the story that inspired some elements in No Game No Life
Skeleton Knight is good one. MC is likeable and OP but has some issues later on. There is some really well developed story. Also I said make my abilities average. A girl dies and is reborn in other world
Alisethera Tanya the blond-haired cancer
I know isekai has taken over but lets face it, it is more fresh than the high school setting that was prevalent for a while. great vid as usual gigguk.
Yeah, and really, who the fuck wants to come home from high school and then watch anime about school again? That's like getting home from work and watching a show about work... oh wait.. they have those too.. :P BOORRRRRING.
Man that was so BOOORING like it could work for some girly romance Mangas but in the end they were just pushing it to the limit. Exept for Danganronpa and Assassin Class those settings were so unique (and the fact that they learned more about how to kill rather then actual school stuff) that they still made it interesting to watch
It will get old quick if they continue to create tons of trash titles.
Highschool setting is kind a exist from several years ago to the level they have "school life" genre.
It never becomes popular surprisingly. They just... a genre that sit down and has blank stare on their eyes.
The isekai genre will always be one of my favorite genres. For me, it is definitely escapism. Transporting to another world with magic and mystical beings? Worth the fantasy!!
12:47 Kirito has a fidget spinner on his jacket
Bob Bob {The Car Salesman} Sao Predicted Fidget Spinners lmao
What about a Connecticut Yankee In King Arthur's Court by Mark Twain (apologies if i butchered the title). I feel that it strongly shares a lot of modern isekai tropes in anime. Of course, I was a child when I read it, and never finished it, but I think a lot of you guys would enjoy it, possibly? Would be interesting to compare imo. Again, I apologize if i got stuff wrong; I just thought it would be worth mentioning.
Dunbine shares a lot with it, afaik.
It's also unique in that the yankee uses his knowledge from the modern world to create steam engines and guns and conquer the medieval world.
And there's also the Witcher. Witchers have deep knowledge of genetics and chemistry which, when combined with the world's magic, turn them into superhumans and it's implied that's because a group of modern day humans were thrown into the Witcher's world a long time in the past. Imagine if an anime did that but also add transmission lines using Morse code, have them beat kingdoms and wizards using basic science.
Ixian Technocrat that sounds cool.
yep. That was kind of realistic take on the genre. Like if you were transported to a new world, the first thing you do is....tell them your secret! I thought it was really well done because it brings logic rather than other tropes to fill the story. This is something I REALLY wished GATE had. GATE is modern world vs. fantasy but it just feels lackluster, its a military genre but focuses more on the harem trope then actually mind-blowing military battles. When every battle of Japan vs. Kingdom comes with Japan losing no one and kingdom losing 100k , it gets old and not very suspenseful. Many Anime don't *know* what shoo they are filling so they put in as many genres as possible until its just OK or hated by everyone. This is why we dont get many big hitting Anime. DBZ was fighting, just fighting and it was awesome, HxH was thriller and it was awesome, Pokemon and One piece was adventure and world buliding and it was huge, Naruto was the Tragic hero trope from Greek, AoT and Tokyo Ghoul was the fear of the unknown, it was basically a human vs. monster.
VERY little Anime that have an insane amount of genre shoved in them will be big, they will mostly be regional popular because no fandom likes it but no fandom hates it either. Is SAO supposed to be survival? Romance? Harem? Adventure? World building? Suspense? Horror? You could see every single genre I listed in SAO and it will do good in some bad in others, never gaining too much popularity but not dying either.
*slow clap* thank you sir
Digimon is another 90s anime where kids from our world are transported to another one
My idea for a new isekai is the destruction of a whole world with everything in it, and everyone is reborn into another world, although only one person, the main character, remembers of the previous world.

how long did it take you to make that script? i could tell you put a lot of effort into it
ok before the script was the research itself. And that takes just about 50% or more of the work. But yes, a lot of work. And then there's all those anime he's editing into the video, and the pacing, and the music. Good thing he has 1 other person to help him with that, but still a damn lot of work.
What anime is shown at 0:15 ?
Dog days
ninja turtles
I love watching Gigguk because of how much effort he puts in his videos. Also, some of the others are super hilarious.
Ah the familiar of zero, the MC got trapped with terrorist loli, a fate worse than death
DrangC0 Bex the original megumin but worse
man that anime was so bad i really hate anime with characters like that pink bitch
The actual worst part is it'll never be finished because the author died.
I watched the whole thing and I was just waiting, "Come on just blow yourself up, just one little slip up, and we will be free"
But Louise was great, and the anime was pretty good until it dived into harem crap.
At least they actually got married.
since I was still very young during the anime boom of the 90's, I can confidently say that Digimon was the only "another world" series I experienced in its entirety
