This movie made a mark on people due to the randomness of the attack. People thought “this could be us.” I think that’s why it hit so hard when it came out.
Seeing this in a big quiet theater was gosh darn frightening. Well made horror movie, despite some standard expected moments.
I watched this with my friend and we were the only ones in the theater. I just remember watching the movie while looking around the entire time as well.. xD
‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️
That scene where 10:57 he's just...there. He COULD have done whatever he wanted yet he didn't. He just stood there then left. It's one of the most terrifying moments EVER!!!
Shaun, it's hilarious that because you've seen many horror movies that somehow you believe you'd do everything correct if put in this situation. Especially considering the fact that just Tom jumping next to you scares you. 😂😂 😂 Go get 'em champ.
The true stories this movie was based on:
The Manson Murders, more specifically Sharon Tate's.
And the director (Bryan Bertino), had an experience as a kid when his parents were out for the night, and someone knocked on his door. His little sister answered, they asked for someone that doesn't live there, and then left. Apparently finding out later that these were the people responsible for multiple break-ins in his neighborhood at the time.
Some people also compare the events of the movie to the Keddie Cabin Murders, though the director did not cite this as an inspiration.
I’ve seen a lot on the keddie cabin murders that I also thought was somewhat of an inspiration for it.
The sound design in this movie is top-notch. There are a lot of predictable elements of this movie, but they used music and sound in a way I've not seen in many movies. As an Okie, I never expected to find Merrell Haggard's "Mama Tried" on a horror soundtrack, but it works so well.
Ok but WHO knocked on the door? 😭And what was your reaction when you heard it on the recording? 🤣Loved the denial from Tom and continuing with the reaction and the review afterwards like nothing happened. 😂
This is more realistic then most horror movies. Thats what makes it more scary. They do remove there masks right before they kill them. The line towards the end has always stuck with me. Why are you doing this to us. Because you were home. Very realistic and chilling line.
Bro, this movie is one of my favorite horror and home invasion films. It's crazy how this whole mystery behind the strangers is never explained and that's what makes it good and interesting. The final scene with the three of them framed together and the response of “Because you were home” is too bizarre!
My dad used to take my brother and me out to Blockbuster when we were at his place. We saw this movie had Scott Speedman (we had found Weirdsville hilarious,) so we gave it a try! Well, my brother and I were victims of an armed home invasion several months before seeing this movie. I sat through it, but I was frozen in fear the entire time. I think the scene that got me the most was where one of the masked intruders was in the background, silent, and she never knew. It was so subtle, not a jump scare, but it made my heart leap. @10:57
Partly inspired by the Manson family murders, partly inspired by a bunch of break ins in the director’s neighborhood when he was a child.
Love how simple this one is. Just makes you sit in the tension for the duration. Simple and effective and the invasion feels truly random. Happy Halloween!! 🔪🔪🎃🎃🔪🔪
I was about to say that! So simple, yet so terrifying!
@@asiahenry7798 Don't think I've ever seen a theater jump as hard as they did when axe guy shows up in the living room.
agreed it does a lot with a little. There's nothing scarier in this world than an unexpected knock at the door imo
Omg I recognize your name from Whit's channel, haven't watched her channel in ages though.
@@anirtakgaming Still go there every once in a while. Have been having a hard time getting into Siesta Key, though. Hoping they switch to a new show soon...maybe something with shorter episodes so they can have more time to talk about something other than the show.
This movie shows how realistic horror is WAY scarier than ghouls, ghosts, or goblins. You don't need monsters. We have plenty of evil in people.
Facts. 99% of supernatural horror movies aren't that scary to me. Realistic horror is FAR superior.
This movie was one of the ones I couldnt watch for years because the trailer alone scared the ish out of me 😭
This and hush really make me appreciate smaller scale movies. The isolation you feel is unreal. Hush is one of my fav slasher movies of all time so i was finally able to go back and watch this 😂 i barely made it lol
The ending is so good! 👌
I VIVIDLY remember the kitchen scene in the theaters, the audience was GAGGED
You wanna know the most terrifying thing about The Strangers? The film was inspired by a real life murder case that happened in Keddie California in the 80s the Keddie Cabin Murders which also unfortunately has never been officially solved
"You're weird" hahaha.
But a 6/10? What, ya'll crazy lol. Love your guys' videos. Definitely two of my favorite ones to watch because you guys have completely different opinions than us Americans. It's cool to see and hear your opinions and how they made you feel. You guys go into a lot more depth into it compared to most reaction people.
You have to give it props for the ending, to have the balls to just point blank stab them to death as they slowly witnessed each other being murdered is genuinely horrifying as it is one of our absolute worst nightmares we could imagine ourselves in, its certainly no Texas Chainsaw Massacre in movie making but it has its moments. It kind of falls into the category of 'The Purge' and movies like that where they aren't what you would call 'cinema' but they have fairly memorable moments albeit cliche or derivative, they all tend to fall on one criteria which is once you have watched them once there isn't any inclination to revisit them.
I think this movie also took inspiration from Michael Haneke's 'Funny Games' which is a very very uncomfortable watch, its also up there with being a film you wouldn't want to rewatch, the original that is, he also remade his own film again but with Tim Roth except its sleeker and with a Hollywood budget which as we all know doesn't really make it better.
Wow can't believe you all didn't like rhis more. As a horror buff it's one of few that has freaked me out. The point of the movie is that killers have no rhyme or reason. Strangers killing strangers just cause they were home. Which happens a lot in real life. Random acta of violence. That's why it's so scary. It cam happen to anyone at anytime.
I love this one! The Strangers is such a fun movie. It is so suspenseful that I was literally holding my breath the whole time I watched it the first time I saw it 😂.
The kids knocked on the door frame. You guys are hilarious how did you not know that. Do people in England not knock Before entering? I love your reactions! 😂
We went back to the film and there isn’t knocking, it happened in the flat haha
Nope I rewound it and the knock is from the boys entering the house. The one boy goes to the side out of frame but knocks at the same time
@@Fairways-and-greens seriously, we re-wound it, it’s not the film, it came from behind us, it’s hard for you because you’re rewinding our video, watch the film on your own from that moment, there isn’t a knock
keep us updated on your haunted house 👀 we had a ghost that would knock on the walls a lot lol
The opening narrating had me expecting the Law and Order sound. 😂
I'm probably in the minority, but I actually really enjoyed this movie. I remember watching this in theaters and the entire theater screamed when Sackface was behind Liv Tyler in the kitchen. Personally I think it's more terrifying when strangers attack rather than aliens or ghosts. The scary factor is this could literally happen to anyone.
This movie scared me when I saw it in the theaters (then again I scare easy). Years later when I lived in a rural house, all I could think was that I better not reenact this movie. For me it was the sounds design and the tension building. Also the simple reason that they were home for me was the final tally cause there are those types of people out there. And yeah, the main characters don't do smart things is a trope, but then again in real life some people do stupid things when they're scared and can't keep a calm head. There's a funny Geico commercial that poke fun at this trope where the one person goes "lets go into the running car!" and another person goes "Let's hide behind the chainsaws" and everyone goes Ok and proceed to hide behind the chainsaws with the villain just shaking their head.
This was one of the craziest theater experiences for a horror/thriller movie….right up there with A Quiet Place (having a full theater absolutely silent).
Great reaction and I didn't expect this video to become known as "The Knocking Controversy" lol
It WAS five past four! Haha.
That weird knock brought back a memory to me. Years ago, my mates parents went away on holiday and while they were gone his grandmother passed away, not wishing to be alone he invited myself and another friend round for a weekend of booze and watching movies as we'd done many times. At one point during a break, my mate went up stairs to phone his granddad to check on him and me and this other mate were just stood up 2 feet apart chatting, when a disembodied female voice just said something that sounded like "Good lad" right next to us, we both turned to look, then looked back at each and confirmed we heard same thing. My mate never believed what happened thought it was a prank, but still to this day I remember that. proper weird.
She was knocked out so I think the Strangers put her in the dress and put the ring on her finger like some sick sort of dress up.
Many thanks to Tom & Shaun! 😨 I heard the knocks.
Those slow stabs tho... 😬 I think that would be the absolute worse way to die..
Phantom knocking made the movie a 4D experience 😂
Happy Halloween guys!!!! Thank you for this treat!!!
There's a French film called Ils (2006) that is essentially the same type of thing but does it much better. Much more tense with much more natural acting. I wish more people knew about it because unfortunately people think that The Strangers is really unique and shocking when it is essentially a remake of a much better film
I remember seeing this at the movies in high school, and my friend & I were FRIGHTENED.
It literally said on the subtitles "knocking sound" when the kids knocked and then you wondered where the knocking sound came from?! lol
We put the subtitle on the screen, it didn’t come from the movie, we even write that we checked the film and no knocking occurred, we just highlighted to you that there was a strange knock in the flat
One of the scariest movies I've seen in a long long time.
You mentioned 'Hush' but there was another movie called 'Hush' that's a British horror film made also in 2008 that wasn't too bad from what I remember. It's like a cat and mouse game.
Three knocks is scary bro. Three knocks indicate a spirit. If you open the door for it it allows them to come in. Also, can indicate a death of someone you know.
One of my favourite “Horror” movies. Absolutely my jam as far as Horror is concerned: pure creeping dread. When I worked as a Film Technician, I would always ride the volume dial on the amp in the Projection booth for the Knocking scenes. Scared a little extra shit out of audiences every time. LOL😂
(I highly recommend that you guys check out *”Talk To Me”* by the way, which really surprised me. A refreshing take, and the best Horror I’ve seen since “Hereditary” and “The Babadook”.
Great reactions guys always enjoy your channels content & discussions.
👍 👍 👍
The knocking very eerie my advice get a priest in bless the room 😂😂
6/10 a fair score 👍
I really love the sequel to this, had a proper early 80's slasher feel, seemed to end up as a marmite movie, I hope you check it out eventually. There is a new trilogy being made in this franchise currently.
Some other good home invasion movies are Them (ils) (2006), You're Next (2011), Funny Games (1997 and/or 2007 remake version), Inside (À l'intérieur) (2007) and The People Under The Stairs (1991). Check them out and never answer the door ever again after.
You think my girl brain didn't ping on how critical Shaun was being of the proposal in the beginning?🤨😁
Happy Halloween to my favorite you tubers
Oh hell yeah. This movie to me was scary as hell. Can't wait to watch
It’s also a remake of a film called Them which was based in teens killing a couple in Eastern Europe
Curiosity was killing me so I went to check on the movie and yeah… there’s not knocking. Happy halloween! 👻
Btw, this movie always reminds me of vacancy (2007) I don’t know if you guys have watched it…?
Vacancy scare the crap out of me just like this film did.
You guys should do horror more often! Very entertaining and funny
The knock is at 4 am
Supposedly it inspired a case out here in California the kaddie cabin murders. Its unsolved to this day so its very very hard to believe.
So we not gonna talk about the knock 😂
The only way I could watch this movie a second time was to watch it with you guys. This movie seriously disturbs me.
Been following you guys for a while, always love the content! I'd highly recommend checking out The Vanishing from 1988, super creepy and unnerving film
Hell yeah the Vanishing rules.
Knocking was on the left side of the soundscape.
It was 5 past 4 lol
@Cinema Rules so there were flip phones like that back in 2008 but the look of the phone when I saw this back then read as more trying to show that this took place sometime between 97-2004ish. Just a guess. But I vividly remember assuming it was meant to be set back a few years prior.
Love this.
I extremely recommend Attack The Block
24:07
“That’s weird.”
“You’re weird.” 😂
I'd recommend watching The Uninvited. Staring Elizabeth Banks.
if you want a good slasher watch "High Tension" (2003), you'll not be disappointed.
They need to learn to carry powerbanks to avoid a dead phone.
A favorite horror movie of mine personally!
23:01 I know a girl denying her flatulence when I hear it. Some will do it to their dying day.
23:16
oh Tom 🥺
i thought that knock was in the fil muntil you started freaking out that it wasn't her lol WTF
It wasn’t in the film haha
Great reaction. This movie was inspired by true stories..
Lol I rewound it and the knock came from the boys entering the house 100%
here's how you make a good slasher flick.
you need a great villain. depending on the story you can flush them out or make them mysterious. sometimes explaining them is a mistake .
you need a group of characters... these films work better with 5 or 6 protags.
they all need to be 3-dimensional and there needs to be interesting dynamics between them.
surprise us with who dies, when they die, and who lives. make it unpredictable. keep the audience guessing.
don't make them stupid. create a circumstances or have a villain that's smarter than your audience and who can force them into taking risks and "push your luck" stakes.
twists are always nice.
The Strangers is so creepy and stressful.
Omg can y’all please watch Urban Cowboy?! As a born and raised Texan, it’s actually pretty realistic, however it would be hilarious to see y’all’s reaction. 🤣
I'm not a patron, but would still like to suggest you watch "Deliver us from evil", a Scott Derrickson ("Sinister", "Black Phone") film, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Doesn't seem much talked about, but it's a good one!
It’s funny you called them “The Family” considering this is loosely inspired by the Manson Murders.
The boy was knocking on the door..
Nope, we went back, no knocking happened int he film, trust me
@@CinemaRules hmm..ok👻
I loved the atmosphere of this movie but man, some things they did I just can't believe such as the boyfriend leaving after the encounter with that weird chick at the front door, and he doesn't even lock the door on his way out lol. NOBODY is doing that. 😂
The best horror movies are the ones that can happen in real life: Rogue 2007,The Reef 2010,The Hitcher 1986,Eden Lake 2008,Killing Ground 2016,The Grey 2011,Backcountry 2014,Vacancy 2007.
The suspense and tension is off the charts.. the cat and mouse games get old and repetitive, but overall I really like this film and consider it pretty effective..
This scared the crap out of me. Another good one is Vacancy.
they literally did the removing of the masks to make the point that they’ve now seen their faces at the end before they start stabbing them.
sometimes it is scarier when the killers are just real people. when it is some supernatural or superhuman killer, we can separate the fear of it ever actually happening to us.
Idk if you’ve seen the show The Leftovers? Liv Tyler is gives a diff type of performance as a pretty villainous character- more nuanced and not the typically breathy gentle soul she tends to play. Re: The Strangers, I agree w/most of your guys’ critiques, but I remember being very frightened and tense when I first saw it. Esp in the first 1/2. That scene w/‘Baghead’ watching LT as she gets a glass of water in the kitchen is an iconic shot. So wtf was with that knock you heard ? 😟 Was that a bit?
Personally I'd love to watch your gaming channel!
Have you guys seen Shutter and The Medium?
You should watch "don't breathe 2"
The greatest horror movie ever made.
This is a remake of a film called ils (them), watch it.
You should consider watching Funny Games, either one but I like the Naiomi Watts remake
..if you thought THIS film was disturbing..do a reaction video for THE POUGHKEEPSIE TAPES
😂
BTW, you guys are joking about this being based on true events, but it actually was based on true events, even though it was loosely based on those events.
good movie.
is it not the kid knocking at the busted in door? haha
Nope, we checked the movie, there was no knock
The French movie ils/them is a far superior home invasion movie.
Soo... the knocking sound was in the film correct? It was on the subtitle. 😂😂😂
It wasn’t in the film no, we added the subtitle to highlight the knockinng
great potential but unfortunately its fall short very quickly.
I’m with you guys on this one. I hear lots of people talk about how scary it was, but even in theaters I found it disappointing. I don’t find any joy in watching two bland protagonists be useless. And the killers are a little too classic-slasher-omniscient. She’s staring from the middle of the street, they look away for a second and look back and they disappear… do they want to be realistic or what? The “because you were home” line was in the trailer and I loved it because it’s like the original Halloween. Killers with no motive or desire for anything, they are just killing. That’s scary because you can’t reason with them. But the movie itself let that concept down imo
i love this film. you guys should go into these films blind tbh for maximum enjoyment.
Please watch When Evil Lurks by Demian Rugna
I wonder if they would talk this much in a movie theater. Keep asking all these questions when you’ll find out what’s going on if you watch the movie.
You wonder why CZcams reactors are reacting?
Fun Fact! Though it says "based on a true story" it's loosely based off the Manson Family Murders. ALSO Wouldn't it be funny if the whole time on the drive home, he's just thinking "Oh god..fookin kill me"
