    DDR V is an alpha, but that shouldn't shield it from constructive criticism. Konami put it out on the internet as an open alpha test, they should be expecting bug reports. It's possible they'll take all of this criticism and use it to make the final version of DDR V a decent browser game. Well, or they'll just drop it like a rock like they did with DDR Dance Wars. regarding the timing getting tighter when the notes get faster, it could be that the windows are tied to the BPM 1st/2nd mix style. might be why they don't allow you to change the multiplier

  • @zetorux
    @zetorux Před 4 lety +16

    Whoa, I'm famous!~
    I assume the reason that the notes in Come to Life are weird is because the stops and BPM changes are tied to the timing offset, rather than to beat positions in the chart. I think if you shifted your global offset in the other direction you'd be able to hit the notes before the stop occurs, (but possibly at the cost of the chart being offsync). This is especially funny with Cosy Catastrophe, since if you shift the offset enough you can wind up with 16th notes at 360 BPM #speedy

  • @PkGam
    @PkGam Před 4 lety +1

    It was pretty funny. When I went to try it, I couldn't play it on a pad because when I heard about it, it was too late at night and others were sleeping, lol! So I only tried it on a keyboard. I also limited myself to playing just the really easy stuff so if it saved scores, they wouldn't get in the way of my pad scores (I later found out they don't save, but meh.). Well, I found out that it seemed to play fine for the most part, minus that it definitely should have speed mods and the first freeze note seems to actually freeze the chart's scroll for a bit but the arrows are still moving (So hit normally despite what you see) but all freezes after that work fine as if it just didn't load the animation for it. But I didn't really notice any other major eccentricities besides that and the ultra-wide timing windows.
    Fast forward two days later when I was able to play it on pad today and hoo boy... When there is more arrows on screen, it stutters so much more, which makes it even harder to read at x1 speed than I expected. I also noticed that the announcer talking actually lowers the volume of the song itself at times. What?... The song is the most important thing to follow. Couldn't' believe the announcer talking so much either. Like I mentioned, I did not notice anything else at first because I was playing on easier difficulties to avoid score overlaps. But when there's more steps playing at higher stuff, it's constant talking. So I wonder if they even tested it on the higher difficulties.
    That all being said, my guess why they have so few options is because of performance. For instance: You'll notice the background (dancer and stage) is very grainy. Which is more indicative of a pre-made video than 3D rendering. Then there's the thing of a lot of people like Note arrows, but there's more arrows for Note, so instead they may have chosen Rainbow as a sort-of middle ground. I'd also presume speed and turn mods (among many others) weren't implemented for similar reasons since it would have to adjust things accordingly. But still... I'd think they could have just had it load them all beforehand and take a bit longer before the song. Even older flash games are set up to do that.
    Whatever is causing all it's issues, it is genuinely baffling because DDR is not a super complex game or anything. In fact, even if they were having trouble with development, they could have just used said Stepmania Engine because it's open-source and free for anyone to use for anything. There is even a "Stepmania Micro" for browsers. I'm "hoping" that it's only so bad because it's rushed to give people something to do during Coronavirus times and it'll improve, but since it only seems to be open temporarily, the chances are not good. Guess' we can just send feedback in see how it goes.

    7:11 at that point you can download simply love, or use the 5.3 default theme. That a20 theme in particular is broken and has not been updated for almost a year now. You know a theme is broken if you press F3, then F6, then 8. It will show all the lua errors in the game. Simply love gives 0. Also the ddr 1080p themes as a whole are more taxing for your stepmania game, and from my understanding are poorly made other then the graphics hearing from other theme makers and stepmania 5.3 developers. That’s just my opinion

    • @Akita23
      @Akita23 Před 4 lety

      There are a couple versions of the theme that exist, I've played on an A20 theme on a friend's cabinet that had no issues whatsoever. The theme itself being 1080 means nothing, since you can always adjust settings to improve performance. Stepmania as a whole is coded poorly that if you use a resolution for the game that isn't the same aspect ratio as your monitor, you will have a ton of micro stutters in game unless you pc is beefy as hell. Texture resolution settings need to be set to default, cause force on or force off check for thousands of instances constantly and degrade performance terribly. Simply love does occasionally give LUA errors depending on install, and version, but the public release is usually good. But the point Etienne was making was if you want a **DDR** experience, to download a **DDR** theme, simply love will not provide the same feeling in that context.

      Chord Cohesion is when a jump (or in stepmania, a three/four note jump) is all treated as one judgement. So if you have an LR jump, and hit L in the Fantastic window but R in the late Excellent window, you'll still get a Fantastic. Without chord Cohesion, the L would be a fantastic and the R would be the late excellent, you'd be given the judgements based on the individual arrows, not the jump itself.

    I admit it is bad... but for assholes to send death threats to Konami over it is immature and ruins any chance of them ever reaching out to outside of Japan ever again. According to a twitter post by Aaron of Japan, this was only done by a few devs at Konami in their free time at home. They also had multiple WIPs, and the management simply took DDR V as the best one and scrapped the rest. Welp, if people genuinely wanted Konami to go back to its glory days, they can just forget about it. These lunatics apparently want Konami to not change and try to appeal to the fans to bring their image up by sending hatemail to the people who worked on this game in their free time to get feedback and work on it more. I still hate Konami for basically saying "Castlevania games don't sell well anymore", only to make a mobile game out of it after Bloodstained, but come on. If Capcom can have their "redemption arc" why not Konami? Business tactics can change. And if a company thinks it fine to fire a dev because their games don't bring them income, its their choice. If they suffer the consequences, they'll try to win back the customers by doing what they think will do that (ie. fans disliked DMC reboot? Boom. DMC5. Fans adored RE2 remake? Boom. RE3 remake. Except some fans hated it, the cycle goes on.)

    It won't surprise me if Konami doesn't do anything more with this because American players sent Death threats and Coronavirus related threats in emails to konami Multiple times because of the quality of this game. It makes me disappointed at how far the community has dropped. Aaron in Japan states that it was the work of only a few people from konami developing it in their free time at home, and was simply the "version chosen to release" and the rest of the WIPs were scrapped. The management happened to like this over any other WIP Browser version that was happening.

    Pretty hot take especially for an alpha game that especially was going to be released with bugs and errors not found in it's arcade titles. It would be pretty dumb for someone to imagine this game out pacing FFR or SM at any point with just how long development has been taken for those games, give it time and maybe this game can be at the very minimum playable to an audience that may not have the luxury of being able to play on an official arcade machine or even knows how to fully use and set up StepMania.

    So you are upset because the game is in Alpha? It is very clear this is an early build of the game which is exactly what an Alpha implies. I do not understand why people are so triggered by the game when it can honestly be cleaned up and work much better given time. It already works better then Pump HTML5 and I am sure this is going to be the tool they use for edit support which honestly might not be that bad considering the absolutely atrocious tool America got for DDR X and X2.

    • @EtienneYT
      @EtienneYT  Před 4 lety +5

      I noted this before, but calling it an Alpha is being generous. This is something you would find with no ratings on the Google Play Store. Konami doesn't care about being intuitive and providing a liberating rhythm game, which is obvious with how DDR is structured to begin with. They just want their target markets to be entertained for the time being e.g. people who play 12's and under.
      No actual experienced DDR player will ever need to play this given the objectively good alternatives that exist.

    • @omg_kon
      @omg_kon Před 4 lety +1

      Have you ever played an Alpha? Because I have and this is actually very stable and works (with obvious bugs). I have played betas and even fully released games that play much worse than this. And you are saying this to a team that released something early for players because of Covid-19, yet you are bashing the team because they were being generous. That's actually -really- shitty.
      It really doesn't matter who this is catered towards. Stepmania and other simulators are borderline illegal or flat out are. This is an official way to play a game that is accessible to almost anyone without any grey areas.
      I think you really need to give this game more time to develop before you make a call out video like this.

    • @EtienneYT
      @EtienneYT  Před 4 lety +7

      @@omg_kon Oh, stop. They clearly did not try with this whatsoever. By your words, you completely twisted my words by thinking I said that it's bad conceptually that they made something during the pandemic. Where did I say I was bashing them doing this? Calling me shitty for Konami's ineptitude to even make a remotely coherent game for consumers is what's shitty. I genuinely don't think you could provide me legitimately good things about this game. They don't have the talent to make something better than what SM/Etterna can offer, that's just a fact given how one-dimensional DDR is.
      Even if that's true, I'd rather play anything community-made any day of the week then some subpar stepcharts and music that Konami will spoonfeed me with. Corporations don't care about anyone who isn't a casual player, and it's abhorrently clear given how horrendous most top charts are for DDR. Etterna and Clone Hero do not have a system where there are paid in-game features, as the game is entirely free with no added costs whatsoever. Anything that would even be made would be through a completely separate Patreon page. But the games themselves are completely free (as they should be imo). Is osu illegal, well, that's a bit more probable since there are paid features through their Osu Supporter system in -game.
      Konami fans seem to be the most hardheaded individuals when it comes to critiquing their games, and will always resort to "oh, well Osu's illegal, Stepmania's illegal, etc", is such a repetitive and not as efficient argument as you think. Frankly, I don't care if it's official, I care if it's fun. You can cheer for Konami all you want. Personally, I love playing DDR when I can, but it's so monotonous and dull at times, that I just have to go to something with more substance to it.
      There's not really any objectivity to either side regarding the legality of rhythm games because of how blurred the line is, but I'd rather have a game that is simply more fun and liberating, as opposed to a corporation giving me stuff that is objectively worse than I could get from Joe Schmo who knows a thing or two about his game.

      and what is your basis for this brilliant argument? just because ddr's official content _can_ be played on an emulator, therefore an emulator with original code, assets, and content must be illegal?
      by this logic windows is illegal because you _can_ play a pirated game on it
      fucking moron

    • @omg_kon
      @omg_kon Před 4 lety +2

      @@EtienneYT Look, you are certainly allowed to have your own opinion but you are definitely not understanding where this game is in the Alpha release. The definition of an Alpha release: "Alpha software is software that is not thoroughly tested by the developer before it is released to customers. Alpha software may contain serious errors, and any resulting instability could cause crashes or data loss." That sounds exactly where this game is.
      And community content is awesome! There is no denying that! Who better to make charts and put songs into simulators than the fans themselves? But for a commercial product, it is so vastly different and more difficult, especially when expanding beyond a single region.
      I am not bashing what you do for the communities or your videos. I am upset that you are really not understanding where this game is and why it was released in it's current state. Konami had good intentions for this to be released in the state it is in to give players something to do at home since arcades are not an option. I think bashing them for something like that is kind of wrong when many players choose not to play simulators for various reasons - legal or not.
