whenever I saw the painting at 21:50 I thought "wow that's such an awesome painting, I love it!!" but I knew exactly what the comments were going to be saying. Sometimes I think the internet was a mistake.

Every time I see those "Wrong Right" tutorials I laugh. Like i remember seeing a "wrong" wrist pose in a tutorial and bc I have hyper mobility I could do that "wrong" wrist pose EASILY. These Right / Wrong tutorials are extremely oversimplified or downright wrong sometimes.
Reminds me of how when i start working on a drawing i want to actually finish up and have it look good (or practice) i try doing the pose i wanna draw if its an idle one or something i can feel for a long enough time while trying to mimic
Ugh I HATE those tutorials! I don't have hypermobility but my fingers still manage to look "off". There is even diversity in hands! There is no real wrong or right in the human body (shapewise).
Hypermobile person here! I often draw characters in a set way because I reference myself for my works a lot. Oftentimes I actually have to scale down the flexibility of a character because I'm so used to seeing myself. Makes making characters a little challenging, but I roll with drawing body diversity anyway. These artists acting like drawing diversity is too hard are lying to themselves and are just douches. If I as someone with an abnormal body can draw characters just fine, there's no excuse for these quote un quote "artists"

The author of the video used the opportunity to say that it doesn't matter how expensive your supplies are and that sometimes limiting yourself to fewer or cheaper tools might aid to your creative process. The comments are trying to agree, I guess.
^ This. Basically. But there are nuances that aren't touched on. Certain tools are indeed simpler to work with, and you cannot achieve the same effects without those specific tools. HOWEVER, this says nothing about drawing skill. Those extra effects are icing on top, *not* the main part of the cake. If the basic cake sucks, the cake sucks. The icing only helps cover those flaws a bit and makes the cake a bit more palatable, but isn't going to make the cake good if it is a total train-wreck that is burnt and dry with too much salt in it. I'd rather have a good basic cake without icing than a dried-out, burnt trainwreck that has icing drizzled on top An elaboration on the scenario with a specific example: Prismacolor Pencils. Those are typically the "top of the line" colored pencils and get pushed super, *super* hard for anyone drawing with colored pencil. Crayola colored pencils are considered the "cheap, school-supply" version. You can still make *very* good works with Crayola colored pencils. (Funny enough, Crayola isn't even bad quality -- there's actually *worse* colored pencils out there that are almost straight up chalk). Now... you want to know the irony? Crayola was actually recommended as one of the colored pencils to use by one of the books I read for drawing with colored pencils that I skimmed through more than a decade back - with the author distinguishing between different pencils being "hard wax" and "soft wax." Crayola was labeled a 'hard wax' pencil, Prismacolor (the basic line that gets promoted) is labeled 'soft wax.' They are used for different purposes (or require slightly different methods for the greatest effectiveness) when drawing. Prismacolor has a specific dedicated line for "hard wax" but that's another thing entirely, and probably wasn't relevant when that book was made Something on the opposite end of the spectrum with where the tool actually does have an impact is with digital art, in particular with programs. Some programs simply do not have the same functionality as others. But this is again going back to the cake analogy -- better tools make it easier to cover up and hide poor skill and things that are slightly lacking, but won't fix core issues for you automatically. Better ingredients and tools aren't going to hide the fact that you are mixing up salt for sugar and that you are burning everything in the pan. You can make a fancier cake with the fancier equipment and ingredients, but that's only possible if you actually have the skills to do so - otherwise you end up with an inedible abomination That said, certain cases... you *do* actually want to have the best tools possible if you plan on getting deep into art from the get-go. But that isn't in all cases and scenarios. When it comes to basic drawing and skills for drawing...? You don't actually need those higher end materials/tools when starting out for the basics. In fact, higher end materials can end up being a detriment as they become crutches that keep you from figuring out your mistakes instead. However, you *do* want to make sure you have the proper tools for the job. You don't want to have only one large flat brush or one large round brush for everything if you need different types of brushes to paint what you want. Imagine needing to paint details with only large brushes available... or maybe not even having a proper palate knife when mixing thicker paints and instead using a brush and contaminating everything with it instead. Or worse with every single brush cleaning container being absolutely filthy so whatever brush you try to use with it ends up getting dirty and contaminated - when you are trying to paint bright and vibrant colors!! (thanks afterschool art classes for children that didn't bother supplying proper materials so everything was a painful mess)
@@gaerekxenos 100% agree. The difference between professional grade watercolors and student grade is literally night and day. I was once told by a professor that at a certain point in your art career you need to invest in good supplies because you don't want to be fighting with your material. You just want it to do what you want.
It goes to show that the phrase "those that can't do, teach" comes from people not understanding that teaching IS a skill in itself and being good at something doesn't guarantee that you will be as good as passing on that ability to others.

People need to heard this. I don't know if every education system had this or not, but in my country, "pure degree" and its "teaching degree" is separated. I mean, for example English degree. You will have English department and English TEACHING department. Since learning about English and what-not for your own is different when you want to share it to other.

I think most of the hate for abstract art comes from how 75% of it is a money laundering scam, 20% is actual trash by trash artists trying to gaslight you into thinking it is good and the last 5% is good art hidden under the money laundering and trash
Money laundered absract art/crappy artist does NOT make up the majority of abstract peices existing in the world. That stuff still grinds mg gears but its not the fault of the style
It's the difference between hotel wall art and art museum abstract art, one is meant to fill a space with some generic shapes and colors and the other is meant to evoke an emotion in an abstract way
@@peachesncharlotte Unfortunately, part of it is definitely the fault of the style -- being that it is too easy to mistake and mix up with other things when you throw all of the background behind the piece out the window. Early criticisms on abstract art were that "a child can do this" - and that has been a common criticism that has lasted for a ridiculously long time. So much that you will still get distasteful comments along those lines on art in general with "even a child can make art" (eg. See one of the Fiverr commercials that was on CZcams about... was it 8~9 years ago...?) People simply don't understand Abstract art a lot of the time. And so a lot of people aren't going to place much value in it, unfortunately. I personally don't care too much about Abstract art, but I am aware of the background of where it stems from and parts of its original ideas and have some appreciation for its origins. On the other hand, half the people out there who see abstract art probably aren't even aware of what that background is, so they're not even going to have that as a base-line for appreciation
24:15 this comment is saying that expensive art supplies are helpful to have. it can be easier to create better quality stuff because more expensive art supplies are professionally made (instead of cheaply made for the masses). but it is still entirely dependent on the skill. Someone can’t expect to use expensive art supplies and get amazing art without knowing how to use them first.
Definitely. For example, expensive colored pencils create much more solid of colors and blend WAY better. A professional can use Crayola pencils and make something good, but if they used Prismacolor, it’s going to be more vibrant and defined.

as an artist who both grew up watching art tutorials and also went to art school, it hurts me how some beginners always believes that the reason why a person draws so well is because of their art supplies. my professor once told me, " A good artist never blames their art supplies."
Late stage Tumblr was the prelude to tick tock tutorials (and everything else toxic with tick tock). Some of them set me back quite a bit- I was a pretty vulnerable teenager. They just loved to shame people for not doing certain things or for certain stylistic choices. Now it seems the exact same cess thriving on tick tock. So glad I don't use it

Professional grade art supplies don't make art creation easier but they usually guarantee longevity of the piece if it's traditional (lightfastness) , or are made with more expensive ingredients so you get brighter colors (certain minerals + less binders for certain paints). Here's some really fun information: You can make gallery quality art with things are cheap as crayons or crayola dye based markers, or ye old dollarstore highlighters and pens. You want to make it last forever? Draw in your sketchbook where closing the book will make your piece last longer. Scan it and print it. You can make great art with these cheapo things and make merch with it. I just wouldn't necessarily want to sell the original because it will fade quickly.
they do. you're right too but good supplies *do* make it easier. example: cheap colored pencils aren't soft so you need to apply much more force for the color payoff that you want, you're often would ruin your paper sooner. they also don't blend and can't be layered. - so yes you can use them of course but you will need to put in much more effort when could've got same results faster and easier

It was a fun speedpaint. Showing how simple lines and colors can add to something interesting and complex. The art supplies comment was just really badly worded but ended up agreeing with the OP anyway.
Talking about heads (Talking Heads?) done wrong and admitting you've done the same really resonated for me. Yesterday I did some sketches of dynamic poses, fencing-like sword duels, and reviewing them this morning I couldn't help but notice the look of their heads. Or lack thereof. Some had rudimentary balloons, others had some details but resembled omelettes more than faces. Poses looked okay for the most part, but my laziness ended up detracting from the whole image
I did nearly 10 years in art school and i have 0 idea what these tiktok tutorials are doing. When i make a tutorial (usually how i colour hair or how to sketch a hand etc) i try make it super basic
i usually dont really like artists who try so hard to be funny with "gen z humor" stuff in their art tutorials tbh (like kooleen for example) i find it kind of corny. but im ashamed to say that the 1st time i laughed at an art tutorial was at 18:40 like in what situation that would be useful lmaooooo
Quality also means archival a lot of the time. I love bic pens but they fade and wouldn’t want to do a piece with it to sell. But I love sketching (especially when hiking, lightweight) with them and wish they would come out with brown ink bic pens!!
I mostly draw in an "anime" style but I still learned realistic anatomy and shading. I draw in my style 99%percent of the time but sometimes a little reminder on this can really help a lot ! Of course it shouldn't be an obligation
You don't have to of course, but you can't deny it's useful if you want to improve your drawings in a certain way (in terms of correct proportions in posings and knowing where everything goes, etc.). You can't learn how to swim if you don't know which parts you should move and how to move them. Just like you can't draw dynamic posing or perspective drawings without understanding and learning anatomy.

While I definitely shouldn't have had unrestricted internet access at a young age, I am glad that I got to experience art tutorials from creators like Jazza and LavenderTowne and got into art early instead of getting into art now and watching lack luster art tutorials that are super mean.
To play devil’s advocate for ‘draw this not that’ tutorials somewhat, the most useful ones are the ones that point out common anatomy mistakes that may *look* okay on their own, until you compare them to the ‘correct’ drawing and realize ‘oh wait that does look off.’ The problem is that it is way too easy for someone to present a deliberate art style choice they don’t like as a ‘common anatomy mistake’ and it’s damn near impossible to tell the difference because it turns into a non-falsifiable statement. I think anime side mouth is a great example, it’s true that it’s not how IRL anatomy works, but it’s a deliberate art style choice that makes communicating emotion in profile view vastly easier and more natural looking depending on the art in question. *FullMetal Alchemist* has side mouth art, and it has some of the best expression work of any visual media period and straight up would not look as good if it were drawing “correctly.” But even to this day you’ll still find people who insist it’s an objectively incorrect way to draw side profiles, which is where it goes from ‘helpful advice’ to ‘trying to dictate how people should or shouldn’t draw.’
i'm actually familiar with the first guy's other content, and it makes this one look like satire about how art tutorials don't fit on tiktok, that they either end up with barely any detail or overstuffed with too much detail. it's also missing his trademark "why stop heeeeeeeeeere" his other tutorials are actually fairly decent, at least i've never had trouble following them, but i think those have more to do with what he covers, stuff that's just more suited to short instructions and don't involve maths.
I use a random mechanical pencil I found on the floor of a subway and printer paper to draw, I color my art with a $10 crayola marker pack my grandma bought me when I was 6. You don't need shit to make good art, you need creativity. You don't even have to know what you're doing, as long as you have fun, and put effort into making something, its art.

The "don't make foot as little hills" part is an example of art style, I guess. I hate drawing feet, I only draw characters with All Stars or boots, I dont have a reason to draw their toes, so I just do it, it's consistently a part of my style now lol. But I *do* know how to draw it, in case I ever need.

1:45 I’m subbed to this guy and basically- and really he does yt shorts and long form content but he mainly does the tuts for entertainment purposes- I mean like he mainly does entertainment stuff
as an engineer, construction lines are essential in schematics, but if they are not explained properly they are completely meaningless. a good example where the construction lines are not properly explained in drawing tutorial is the rule of thirds. it IS regurgitated and repeated ad infinitum, but rarely if ever is it actually explained properly. from tolerances, precise ratios for features within each third, the overshoot of each third, impact of perspective and more. most of those are left in the "just practice" category which means that every person learning is following the basic rules but than use a lot of trial and error on an already solved problem to reach the same conclusion.
Me personally, my art style is kind of cartoony, could fall into the category of someone who’s spent about half their used lifespan learning to draw anime and only managed to make it look remotely like anime 2 years ago. These tips don’t work for me sometimes, but am I going to dismiss it as useless garbage or invalidate it? NOPE. These people have miles more experience than I do in the art field, and I know that I can’t do better yet. These people need to learn that sentiment too.
Around 18:00, the part where you were talking about overwhelming editing, I could completely understand what kooleen was saying but that other guy I comprehended nothing. I’m a beginner artist, so I could be considered a sample of all the beginners out there that had no idea what he was saying.
The fact that an artist is just using the tools and supplies they want to use and someone projects their emotions onto them simply because they dont have those things and cant afford those things. Thats so sad
I've changed my art style at least 100 times, big and small changes, and I think every artist SHOULD change their styles and work with things outside of their comfort zone. Art shouldn't be stagnant, plus it's always good practice and you might find a new piece of style you enjoy!
My art teacher a long time ago once told a story about a toilet seat, it was put in a museum because an artist wanted to provoke a question , the teacher asked us if it was art or not, I think now I understand it, someone had to have created it, which means someone somewhere, designed it, so it could be termed as art, because you use your brain in the same way for art, it was a pretty weird story, and not every piece has to invoke something in someone, sometimes it can just be, and people like it anyway. (Or was it the toilet itself? I can't remember)
24:20 trying to say getting newer tools creates efficiency but without your skill to use them they are practically useless. Agreeing to the og vid that was basically saying having cheap tools creates limitations, but the light of it is that it promotes creativity to work with what you have. And even if you have the crazy expensive tools its not gonna magically make your art better.

I'd like to see you do a video discussing the problematic nature of entitled artists, particularly PacificNoir on deviantart. PN is a (Russian I think) realism artist who feels under threat whenever he/she sees any art done in a similar fashion, laying bold claims to drawing horse's eyelashes and mane-styles in certain ways and believing anyone who draws realistic horses are thieves. PN has harassed and somewhat threatened people and has a massive following, while also drawing some rather questionable content and being called out for directly tracing photos of horses down to the shadow while simultaneously having a meltdown over people "referencing" his/her art (aka anyone drawing in a similar style.) I've seen and heard plenty of claims like PN's over the 15 years I've been in the art community, but never all of these claims from one single person lol it's utterly bonkers! And PN gets away with it, mostly. PN's followers just lovebomb the heck outta any discourse and sometimes white knight/witchhunt
I hate hate hate it when tutorials go ‘draw this little box here and add a circle’ or something. As an artist, I speak with confidence when I say that isn’t getting you anywhere, especially with anatomy. Because bodies are so different and can vary so much, you have to understand what you’re actually drawing in order to get better. I might be being over dramatic about this but 🤷♀
honestly i both appreciate and dislike the "know the rules [of art] before you break them" sentiment. on one hand, it is good to learn the fundamentals and there are a lot of good skills and concepts to learn, and its especially good for when youre trying to do a realistic / semi realistic style. but on the other hand, i see it used in an almost condescending context most of the time, and often its just used to put down other artists for not being "good" enough because they dont draw in a realistic style or arent "educated" enough in traditional styles. remember: theres no one way to make art. you dont need to get a billion different degrees from a bunch of fancy art schools just to be able to draw good. everyones styles and artistic journeys are different, and its okay if you dont fully understand the fundamentals of art as long as youre having fun. " know the rules before you break them "
The guy at 24:20 was saying that expensive art supplies are often easier to work with (smoother, more pigmented, etc.) but if doesnt mean much if you dont have the skill. If i spend a bunch of money on fancy oil pastels, it could make me faster at making the same piece, but it doesnt mean much if I dont learn proportions.
I am nowhere near an experienced artist but I definitely agree with the last tutorial shown: You don't need top tier expensive materials in order to make lovely art, sometimes just a pencil and an eraser in a normal sketchbook works just fine, though I am not doubting that professional or better quality materials can indeed help an artist and their process, but mainly if they know how to use them properly in general, of course there is not only one way to do that but there are bases in order to do freely what you want with the medium you chose. To break the rules you have to know them first! But that's just my take, people can disagree with this statement and that's totally fine.
I'm not going to lie, the thing that's worked for me learning to draw (I'm not very good, but I have gotten better) was just to buy a super cheap sketchpad, and some completely ordinary non art pens/pencils that felt good to use, and then just . . . draw a lot from all sorts of different sources.

Really, they're always so show off-y or pompous. The Don't being a stylized or hyper simple doodle that usually still looks fine, and the Do being a speedpaint of their own style or realism that takes way more steps than it really needs. Or in the worst cases, they take 80 steps to draw the more boring bland person staring right into the camera in a boring pose.
They complete it in 24 steps because i guess they just want it to look perfect and because they’re accurate with details,while this does vary from one style to another i can kinda see where ur coming from,sometimes too much isn’t necessary and that less really is more (but that’s just my personal opinion)
one particular thing that I really hate about these "popular" tutorials that I don't think anyone has mentioned is that often they show you some method that works super well for the exact thing that they're doing and terribly for what you're doing. like it works really well for drawing an eye from front view but as soon as you shift perspectives it falls to pieces

I do not trust short form content, or normal art tutorials. I watch speepaints and pray that I guessed their process right while also wondering wtf is a multiply layer (Still don't tbh)
my hope is that short form content will, in the right conditions, improve much much faster than long form content, as its easy to make and easy to tweak. Those conditions dont actually exist right now though, your content isnt judged by the algorithm on how good it is at what its meant to do, its judged on how entertaining it is, and how agreeable it is to whichever community its recommended to. Someday we'll get a good algorithm for short form content and there will be a generation of super geniuses or something.
I don't think Jadokar (guy from the second hand example) deserves the critique like this Because, where yeah, loud and maybe a bit confusing, he does explain the steps needed to be able to draw a hand Does he really need to dumb it down even more, or do people just need to learn how to understand what they're being told?

Half of the "tutorials" rely on the viewer already knowing something of the basics, which is the issue to begin with when the viewer doesn't have those
The last Tik Tok speaks to me especially because I know that no matter which tools you use, you can still create something with it! Also not to call out someone but a very famous artist who used to work at Disney and streams on here and Twitch stated that YOU NEED expensive stuff to create good art which was kinda shocking to me to hear.
To be fair only watching content no matter what it’s form ain’t going to make you an artist. The only way to do that is to stop consuming content and start creating it!
I have tutorials on my channel inspired by exactly what you are talking about. The "fixing your art" culture is bleh. We need to teach people what they need to consider before expressing themselves through art so they can have a relaxing fulfilling time. Alot of these tutorials are from people who know how to draw, but will never reach the artistic expression like Frank Miller for example, someone who gets clowned and praised for his work but will die a legend. Great video man!
I really agree with the tiktok about how your art supplies don't equate to the quality of your art. Im a digital artist so its a little different but the same idea still stands. You can buy an expensive art program and it will probably make making art easier and allow you access to tools that help elevate your work. But you can also see absolutely GORGEOUS art created on mspaint that an inexperienced artist using the most expensive art program and tablet could not recreate. It has to do with your skill. It does suck when you can't afford the materials you want, but that shouldn't stop you from creating and trying to improve! I also agree that using more limited supplies can even boost creativity! Like sometimes I like to pull up mspaint and sketch with it, I find it can loosen up my lines and keeps me from overthinking. Its fun to work with and try to create the best thing you can, or just a little doodle, using such a limited program. In the end your artwork is going to reflect your skill, not the supplies you have.
Having the anatomy knowledge is useful, even if your style uses unrealistic proportions, you want to make them look unrealistic in a BELIEVEABLE WAY not just blindly doing whatever, it has to look purposeful or it'll just look like crap

Every time I see those "Wrong Right" tutorials I laugh. Like i remember seeing a "wrong" wrist pose in a tutorial and bc I have hyper mobility I could do that "wrong" wrist pose EASILY. These Right / Wrong tutorials are extremely oversimplified or downright wrong sometimes.
Reminds me of how when i start working on a drawing i want to actually finish up and have it look good (or practice) i try doing the pose i wanna draw if its an idle one or something i can feel for a long enough time while trying to mimic

Hypermobile person here! I often draw characters in a set way because I reference myself for my works a lot. Oftentimes I actually have to scale down the flexibility of a character because I'm so used to seeing myself. Makes making characters a little challenging, but I roll with drawing body diversity anyway. These artists acting like drawing diversity is too hard are lying to themselves and are just douches. If I as someone with an abnormal body can draw characters just fine, there's no excuse for these quote un quote "artists"

The author of the video used the opportunity to say that it doesn't matter how expensive your supplies are and that sometimes limiting yourself to fewer or cheaper tools might aid to your creative process.

But there are nuances that aren't touched on. Certain tools are indeed simpler to work with, and you cannot achieve the same effects without those specific tools. HOWEVER, this says nothing about drawing skill. Those extra effects are icing on top, *not* the main part of the cake. If the basic cake sucks, the cake sucks. The icing only helps cover those flaws a bit and makes the cake a bit more palatable, but isn't going to make the cake good if it is a total train-wreck that is burnt and dry with too much salt in it. I'd rather have a good basic cake without icing than a dried-out, burnt trainwreck that has icing drizzled on top
An elaboration on the scenario with a specific example:
Prismacolor Pencils. Those are typically the "top of the line" colored pencils and get pushed super, *super* hard for anyone drawing with colored pencil. Crayola colored pencils are considered the "cheap, school-supply" version. You can still make *very* good works with Crayola colored pencils. (Funny enough, Crayola isn't even bad quality -- there's actually *worse* colored pencils out there that are almost straight up chalk). Now... you want to know the irony? Crayola was actually recommended as one of the colored pencils to use by one of the books I read for drawing with colored pencils that I skimmed through more than a decade back - with the author distinguishing between different pencils being "hard wax" and "soft wax." Crayola was labeled a 'hard wax' pencil, Prismacolor (the basic line that gets promoted) is labeled 'soft wax.' They are used for different purposes (or require slightly different methods for the greatest effectiveness) when drawing. Prismacolor has a specific dedicated line for "hard wax" but that's another thing entirely, and probably wasn't relevant when that book was made
Something on the opposite end of the spectrum with where the tool actually does have an impact is with digital art, in particular with programs. Some programs simply do not have the same functionality as others. But this is again going back to the cake analogy -- better tools make it easier to cover up and hide poor skill and things that are slightly lacking, but won't fix core issues for you automatically. Better ingredients and tools aren't going to hide the fact that you are mixing up salt for sugar and that you are burning everything in the pan. You can make a fancier cake with the fancier equipment and ingredients, but that's only possible if you actually have the skills to do so - otherwise you end up with an inedible abomination
That said, certain cases... you *do* actually want to have the best tools possible if you plan on getting deep into art from the get-go. But that isn't in all cases and scenarios. When it comes to basic drawing and skills for drawing...? You don't actually need those higher end materials/tools when starting out for the basics. In fact, higher end materials can end up being a detriment as they become crutches that keep you from figuring out your mistakes instead. However, you *do* want to make sure you have the proper tools for the job. You don't want to have only one large flat brush or one large round brush for everything if you need different types of brushes to paint what you want. Imagine needing to paint details with only large brushes available... or maybe not even having a proper palate knife when mixing thicker paints and instead using a brush and contaminating everything with it instead. Or worse with every single brush cleaning container being absolutely filthy so whatever brush you try to use with it ends up getting dirty and contaminated - when you are trying to paint bright and vibrant colors!! (thanks afterschool art classes for children that didn't bother supplying proper materials so everything was a painful mess)

I was once told by a professor that at a certain point in your art career you need to invest in good supplies because you don't want to be fighting with your material. You just want it to do what you want.
It goes to show that the phrase "those that can't do, teach" comes from people not understanding that teaching IS a skill in itself and being good at something doesn't guarantee that you will be as good as passing on that ability to others.

@@peachesncharlotte Unfortunately, part of it is definitely the fault of the style -- being that it is too easy to mistake and mix up with other things when you throw all of the background behind the piece out the window. Early criticisms on abstract art were that "a child can do this" - and that has been a common criticism that has lasted for a ridiculously long time. So much that you will still get distasteful comments along those lines on art in general with "even a child can make art" (eg. See one of the Fiverr commercials that was on CZcams about... was it 8~9 years ago...?)
People simply don't understand Abstract art a lot of the time. And so a lot of people aren't going to place much value in it, unfortunately. I personally don't care too much about Abstract art, but I am aware of the background of where it stems from and parts of its original ideas and have some appreciation for its origins. On the other hand, half the people out there who see abstract art probably aren't even aware of what that background is, so they're not even going to have that as a base-line for appreciation

Definitely. For example, expensive colored pencils create much more solid of colors and blend WAY better. A professional can use Crayola pencils and make something good, but if they used Prismacolor, it’s going to be more vibrant and defined.

Professional grade art supplies don't make art creation easier but they usually guarantee longevity of the piece if it's traditional (lightfastness) , or are made with more expensive ingredients so you get brighter colors (certain minerals + less binders for certain paints). Here's some really fun information: You can make gallery quality art with things are cheap as crayons or crayola dye based markers, or ye old dollarstore highlighters and pens. You want to make it last forever? Draw in your sketchbook where closing the book will make your piece last longer. Scan it and print it. You can make great art with these cheapo things and make merch with it. I just wouldn't necessarily want to sell the original because it will fade quickly.

cheap colored pencils aren't soft so you need to apply much more force for the color payoff that you want, you're often would ruin your paper sooner. they also don't blend and can't be layered. - so yes you can use them of course but you will need to put in much more effort when could've got same results faster and easier

Yesterday I did some sketches of dynamic poses, fencing-like sword duels, and reviewing them this morning I couldn't help but notice the look of their heads. Or lack thereof. Some had rudimentary balloons, others had some details but resembled omelettes more than faces.
Poses looked okay for the most part, but my laziness ended up detracting from the whole image

You don't have to of course, but you can't deny it's useful if you want to improve your drawings in a certain way (in terms of correct proportions in posings and knowing where everything goes, etc.). You can't learn how to swim if you don't know which parts you should move and how to move them. Just like you can't draw dynamic posing or perspective drawings without understanding and learning anatomy.

While I definitely shouldn't have had unrestricted internet access at a young age, I am glad that I got to experience art tutorials from creators like Jazza and LavenderTowne and got into art early instead of getting into art now and watching lack luster art tutorials that are super mean.
To play devil’s advocate for ‘draw this not that’ tutorials somewhat, the most useful ones are the ones that point out common anatomy mistakes that may *look* okay on their own, until you compare them to the ‘correct’ drawing and realize ‘oh wait that does look off.’ The problem is that it is way too easy for someone to present a deliberate art style choice they don’t like as a ‘common anatomy mistake’ and it’s damn near impossible to tell the difference because it turns into a non-falsifiable statement.
I think anime side mouth is a great example, it’s true that it’s not how IRL anatomy works, but it’s a deliberate art style choice that makes communicating emotion in profile view vastly easier and more natural looking depending on the art in question. *FullMetal Alchemist* has side mouth art, and it has some of the best expression work of any visual media period and straight up would not look as good if it were drawing “correctly.” But even to this day you’ll still find people who insist it’s an objectively incorrect way to draw side profiles, which is where it goes from ‘helpful advice’ to ‘trying to dictate how people should or shouldn’t draw.’

i'm actually familiar with the first guy's other content, and it makes this one look like satire about how art tutorials don't fit on tiktok, that they either end up with barely any detail or overstuffed with too much detail. it's also missing his trademark "why stop heeeeeeeeeere"
his other tutorials are actually fairly decent, at least i've never had trouble following them, but i think those have more to do with what he covers, stuff that's just more suited to short instructions and don't involve maths.
I use a random mechanical pencil I found on the floor of a subway and printer paper to draw, I color my art with a $10 crayola marker pack my grandma bought me when I was 6. You don't need shit to make good art, you need creativity. You don't even have to know what you're doing, as long as you have fun, and put effort into making something, its art.

The "don't make foot as little hills" part is an example of art style, I guess. I hate drawing feet, I only draw characters with All Stars or boots, I dont have a reason to draw their toes, so I just do it, it's consistently a part of my style now lol. as an engineer, construction lines are essential in schematics, but if they are not explained properly they are completely meaningless.
a good example where the construction lines are not properly explained in drawing tutorial is the rule of thirds.
it IS regurgitated and repeated ad infinitum, but rarely if ever is it actually explained properly.
from tolerances, precise ratios for features within each third, the overshoot of each third, impact of perspective and more.
most of those are left in the "just practice" category which means that every person learning is following the basic rules but than use a lot of trial and error on an already solved problem to reach the same conclusion.
Me personally, my art style is kind of cartoony, could fall into the category of someone who’s spent about half their used lifespan learning to draw anime and only managed to make it look remotely like anime 2 years ago. These tips don’t work for me sometimes, but am I going to dismiss it as useless garbage or invalidate it? NOPE. These people have miles more experience than I do in the art field, and I know that I can’t do better yet. These people need to learn that sentiment too.
Around 18:00, the part where you were talking about overwhelming editing, I could completely understand what kooleen was saying but that other guy I comprehended nothing. I’m a beginner artist, so I could be considered a sample of all the beginners out there that had no idea what he was saying.
That first creator you showed I actually really like him. He doesn't usually make tutorials, it's more just tips presented in an entertaining fashion

The fact that an artist is just using the tools and supplies they want to use and someone projects their emotions onto them simply because they dont have those things and cant afford those things. Thats so sad

I've changed my art style at least 100 times, big and small changes, and I think every artist SHOULD change their styles and work with things outside of their comfort zone. Art shouldn't be stagnant, plus it's always good practice and you might find a new piece of style you enjoy!
My art teacher a long time ago once told a story about a toilet seat, it was put in a museum because an artist wanted to provoke a question , the teacher asked us if it was art or not, I think now I understand it, someone had to have created it, which means someone somewhere, designed it, so it could be termed as art, because you use your brain in the same way for art, it was a pretty weird story, and not every piece has to invoke something in someone, sometimes it can just be, and people like it anyway.
(Or was it the toilet itself? I can't remember)

24:20 trying to say getting newer tools creates efficiency but without your skill to use them they are practically useless. Agreeing to the og vid that was basically saying having cheap tools creates limitations, but the light of it is that it promotes creativity to work with what you have. And even if you have the crazy expensive tools its not gonna magically make your art better.
bcs of tiktoks and reels, i just cant sit and draw what i love and what i want.. i always need to consider what should i draw to attract attention and interest in 5 seconds and whats popular with stupid trends. and still, i need to know how to MARKETING and be a INFLUENCER while sharing my art. Being artist not enough, you must know how to entertain people. Be comedian, be story teller, be teacher and etc, I hate the every aspect of social media

I'd like to see you do a video discussing the problematic nature of entitled artists, particularly PacificNoir on deviantart. PN is a (Russian I think) realism artist who feels under threat whenever he/she sees any art done in a similar fashion, laying bold claims to drawing horse's eyelashes and mane-styles in certain ways and believing anyone who draws realistic horses are thieves. PN has harassed and somewhat threatened people and has a massive following, while also drawing some rather questionable content and being called out for directly tracing photos of horses down to the shadow while simultaneously having a meltdown over people "referencing" his/her art (aka anyone drawing in a similar style.)
I've seen and heard plenty of claims like PN's over the 15 years I've been in the art community, but never all of these claims from one single person lol it's utterly bonkers! And PN gets away with it, mostly. PN's followers just lovebomb the heck outta any discourse and sometimes white knight/witchhunt

I hate hate hate it when tutorials go ‘draw this little box here and add a circle’ or something. As an artist, I speak with confidence when I say that isn’t getting you anywhere, especially with anatomy. Because bodies are so different and can vary so much, you have to understand what you’re actually drawing in order to get better. I might be being over dramatic about this but 🤷♀

honestly i both appreciate and dislike the "know the rules [of art] before you break them" sentiment. on one hand, it is good to learn the fundamentals and there are a lot of good skills and concepts to learn, and its especially good for when youre trying to do a realistic / semi realistic style. but on the other hand, i see it used in an almost condescending context most of the time, and often its just used to put down other artists for not being "good" enough because they dont draw in a realistic style or arent "educated" enough in traditional styles.
remember: theres no one way to make art. you dont need to get a billion different degrees from a bunch of fancy art schools just to be able to draw good. everyones styles and artistic journeys are different, and its okay if you dont fully understand the fundamentals of art as long as youre having fun.

The guy at 24:20 was saying that expensive art supplies are often easier to work with (smoother, more pigmented, etc.) but if doesnt mean much if you dont have the skill.
If i spend a bunch of money on fancy oil pastels, it could make me faster at making the same piece, but it doesnt mean much if I dont learn proportions.
We spend our time making art trendy instead of uplifting eachother in our community
I am nowhere near an experienced artist but I definitely agree with the last tutorial shown:
You don't need top tier expensive materials in order to make lovely art, sometimes just a pencil and an eraser in a normal sketchbook works just fine, though I am not doubting that professional or better quality materials can indeed help an artist and their process, but mainly if they know how to use them properly in general, of course there is not only one way to do that but there are bases in order to do freely what you want with the medium you chose.
To break the rules you have to know them first! But that's just my take, people can disagree with this statement and that's totally fine.

I'm not going to lie, the thing that's worked for me learning to draw (I'm not very good, but I have gotten better) was just to buy a super cheap sketchpad, and some completely ordinary non art pens/pencils that felt good to use, and then just . . . draw a lot from all sorts of different sources.

But since your talking about tutorials, i dislike when drawing something simple is shown as a difficult and tedious task in some tutorials. Like bruv why do others have to complete 24 steps to draw a portion of hair-
Really, they're always so show off-y or pompous. The Don't being a stylized or hyper simple doodle that usually still looks fine, and the Do being a speedpaint of their own style or realism that takes way more steps than it really needs. Or in the worst cases, they take 80 steps to draw the more boring bland person staring right into the camera in a boring pose.
They complete it in 24 steps because i guess they just want it to look perfect and because they’re accurate with details,while this does vary from one style to another i can kinda see where ur coming from,sometimes too much isn’t necessary and that less really is more (but that’s just my personal opinion)
one particular thing that I really hate about these "popular" tutorials that I don't think anyone has mentioned is that often they show you some method that works super well for the exact thing that they're doing and terribly for what you're doing. like it works really well for drawing an eye from front view but as soon as you shift perspectives it falls to pieces

my hope is that short form content will, in the right conditions, improve much much faster than long form content, as its easy to make and easy to tweak. Those conditions dont actually exist right now though, your content isnt judged by the algorithm on how good it is at what its meant to do, its judged on how entertaining it is, and how agreeable it is to whichever community its recommended to. Someday we'll get a good algorithm for short form content and there will be a generation of super geniuses or something.

This stuff is partly why I'm so happy to be getting a space in a server I'm part of to help provide a place to learn and ask questions without this garbage crawling after them. Half of the "tutorials" rely on the viewer already knowing something of the basics, which is the issue to begin with when the viewer doesn't have those
The last Tik Tok speaks to me especially because I know that no matter which tools you use, you can still create something with it! Also not to call out someone but a very famous artist who used to work at Disney and streams on here and Twitch stated that YOU NEED expensive stuff to create good art which was kinda shocking to me to hear.

I have tutorials on my channel inspired by exactly what you are talking about. The "fixing your art" culture is bleh. We need to teach people what they need to consider before expressing themselves through art so they can have a relaxing fulfilling time. Alot of these tutorials are from people who know how to draw, but will never reach the artistic expression like Frank Miller for example, someone who gets clowned and praised for his work but will die a legend. Great video man!
I really agree with the tiktok about how your art supplies don't equate to the quality of your art. Im a digital artist so its a little different but the same idea still stands. You can buy an expensive art program and it will probably make making art easier and allow you access to tools that help elevate your work. But you can also see absolutely GORGEOUS art created on mspaint that an inexperienced artist using the most expensive art program and tablet could not recreate. It has to do with your skill. It does suck when you can't afford the materials you want, but that shouldn't stop you from creating and trying to improve! I also agree that using more limited supplies can even boost creativity! Like sometimes I like to pull up mspaint and sketch with it, I find it can loosen up my lines and keeps me from overthinking. Its fun to work with and try to create the best thing you can, or just a little doodle, using such a limited program. In the end your artwork is going to reflect your skill, not the supplies you have.
Having the anatomy knowledge is useful, even if your style uses unrealistic proportions, you want to make them look unrealistic in a BELIEVEABLE WAY not just blindly doing whatever, it has to look purposeful or it'll just look like crap
