What a GREAT job you did on this. I LOVE build videos of these classic, older kits especially ones from the 1/48th Pro Modeler series. In your capable hands, you prove how good they can look compared to many of the newer kits five times as expensive. In addition, your videos are so well "produced." All the facts and figures you supply on the subject aircraft; your clear, concise construction sequence and techniques; identifying products you used as well as the music you've included. Keep up the good work. I am very glad to be one of your loyal subscribers. THANK YOU!

Max, I'm going to have to jump in here on Lawrence's comment. Hope Lawrence doesn't mind (the rest of the thread seems to be in another place). Fantastic build. Just goes to show what can be achieved , with good techniques, thoughtfully/ skillfully applied. Well done!

You certainly have improved your painting and weathering skills since 2001.....great job....very enjoyable watch and very glad to see a WW2 model (not that I have any issues with the modern ones you build). Your work is full of tips and the facts behind the build are always a point of interest.....thank you!!

I had stacks of boxes of these plastic models in the garage for years that I never had a chance to build or put together. This is fantastic! I just imagine it was me doing this. I would skip many days of lunch just to use my lunch money to buy these at the department store including paint and accessories. Never could afford an air brush. The radio recording during the WWII days is icing on the cake!

Can we have a tour of all your model builds? I think it would be awesome to see all the amazing models you have made throughout the years and how far your skills have come. I started watching your videos about 2 months ago and it reminded me of when my dad use to built models when I was a kid and how I would play with them and break them (sorry dad). I then showed my dad your videos and he was hooked on watching some videos with me. We then went and bought a model kit which was the f-22 raptor. We began building it having fun but I had to go back home with my mom and I had to finish on my own. It took awhile but I finished it and I’m proud of it even though it looks like it should be burned in fire. I’m now working on the f-14 tomcat model kit and I can’t wait to finish it. I don’t know where I was going with this but I want to thank you for uploading these videos I enjoy every minute of them and I started building some of my own models. I hope you continue and have fun building them.

Thanks Fernando, I'm glad you're having fun which is the most important part and that you and your father are taking time to share the hobby together when you can! I don't have too many of my earlier models, maybe just a handful. I'm always afraid to move them because something always seems to break off. But, I'll keep your suggestion in mind. It may be enjoyable for the viewers to see.

I built this same Pro Modeler kit in the over all sea blue version off the Bunker Hill. It was a beautiful kit then, and I plan to build another in the near future. Same version, but with lots of aftermarket detailing. Along with other books to research, IPMS Stockholm is a great website for research. On the later Helldivers (late 1944 and 45) the cockpit was olive interior green, with everything else inside chromate green. The earlier Accurate Miniatures kit is also great. The cockpit on that one was painted with an in house "Curtiss interior green," or olive drab with some flat yellow in it. This is a great model, and you did a great job on this kit.

Love the build. Makes me wish I had bought the kit when I had the chance. I have the Monogram version of this kit to build. Interesting note, the Army Air Corp wanted a dive bomber before the war. They placed an order for several of these planes on December 31st, 1940. They made a few changes to the plane. Larger wheels, removal of the tailhook, removal of the folding wing mechanisms and a few other minor changes. The plane was based on the SB2C-1. They were designated A-25A Shrike. Info from Squadron Signal aviation book on the SB2C Helldiver. I was a volunteer at an airshow one year and had the priviledge of keeping the crowd back from a Helldiver as it started up to do flyovers for the show. That prop sent every tiny piece of sand and rocks flying. Glad I was wearing long pants. The best sounds to hear are the sound of a radial engine and merlin roaring to life followed by allison engines when it comes to planes.

Good job! I was surprised to see that Revell fixed that old Monogram kit. I built it back in the 80s with the folding wings and retractable landing gear. Those old Monogram kit's were kind of toy like. But I always saw them as a blank canvas that you could make a masterpiece out of with a little bit of time and detailing. And they were a lot of fun to build when you were a kid. The old Monogram P40 is still one of my favorites and they all bring back a lot of fond memories. 🙂

  • @themajesticmagnificent8561

If that video was 2 hours long,I would have happily watched it.Great video as well as the wonderful build.I seldom like music on model videos but you had a great choice that was both interesting but not overbearing. In fact some of the tunes help to enhance the view of the build.A balance like that is hard to achieve. Also I liked the camera angles to show the work. They were clear enough to see how the part looked and how it was transformed by picking up on subtle details.Sometimes when the angle of filming is too flat fixed and straight it’s hard to see subtle details like weathering being added by the modeler.Only later when we see a different view we see the effect.
This is my second view of this video as I got this kit in my stash and finally its on my build list.

its a 1/350 fletcher class destroyer.. Tom, I've been modeling for 55 years and I still learn something new from your builds..always enjoy the background audio and info..only gripe is put some crew figures with the aircraft, they establish scale of the aircraft ( they'rs not UAV's ) lol...as always another great build and video..hope you do the 1/48 L-39 soon..

Hi Peter, as to the Helldiver there was no pilot figure. I have indeed omitted pilots and aircrews in the past. I think figure painting is probably the hardest thing to pull off in the model world. I haven't built up the confidence to try that avenue yet.

I loved your work, especially using metal, interior green and then the actual colour which is realistic in my mind and yours. You are the first modeller that I have seen using that method which I have always thought about along the same kinda lines as the way to go. My only comment is that I thought maybe you should have mixed maybe 15 % > 20% white into your sea & intermediate sea blue colours just to simulate the sun fade of the harsh Pacific Ocean sun and salt for a little bit more realistic effect.
Cheers mate 🍻, love ya stuff.🇦🇺

Fabulous looking Helldiver mate. What a difference 18 years of experience makes aye?
You've given me some cool ideas for when the time comes to build my RNZAF Dauntless and Ventura!
A small tip re the aircraft canopies. I like to paint the exterior of the clear parts with the interior colour first and then paint the exterior colour over the top. This gives the effect of looking like the interior was painted from the inside as well which is very tricky to do.
As for the mystery model... at a guess I'd say possibly either a 1/48 scale Grumman Avenger or Hellcat, or if a 1/350 scale ship.... perhaps the USS Missouri?

I always thought Promodeler rendition of this plane has an exaggerated wing dihedral angle. That's why it has been in my stash for past 20 years but your techniques are great! I'm still searching for a way to correct the wing issue or perhaps build them in folding wing configuration, that's another 20 years to think about it. 😂😂

Hey, thanks for making your videos with such attention to detail with little factoids and period footage/audio.
I have a question about decals if anyone can help. I’ve been having problems with decals that bond too quickly and tightly, after only a couple seconds (even with plenty of liquid around) so they become unworkable and stuck in the wrong position. Are there any tricks for these problems? It’s almost impossible to slide them on perfectly the first time and they slide and bind randomly while trying to get them aligned right.

    • @MaxAfterburner
      @MaxAfterburner  Před 5 lety

Hi Captain Cruise, if I have this kind of problem, I tend to use a lot more water from the decal dish. The model will be dripping wet in the area, but I can easily float the decal still and not have it bind. On the other hand, this will dilute/wash away any decal setting solution you've pre-wetted the model with.
