Permits easy. The stop/start waiting on inspections in my area is the real momentum killer. Especially when your town is at “Covid-level” staffing almost three years after the onset and everything else has returned to semi-normal

No permits? Not good at all. If you get caught they will put a stop order on your job and a fine. They can hold you up after that for as long as they want. If you have a fire and you didn't get a permit the insurance will find out a way to get out of paying. If you have it built there inspector can make you tear it down. Ñ

Summer of 99' my father made us kids get up at 7AM and help him build his garage. I hated it. We were all exhausted at the end. I look back now and I'm couldn't be more proud that my family built it. We came together for a purpose and we get to set back and use enjoy. Family is important and it's important that we teach our children how to survive... Teach them how to create.
    Thanks for sharing the video.
I'm a mom of two children. We are about to build an addition onto our home and I'll be the one this time that is rounding up the family (even my father). I hope my children will enjoy it.

I just bought a house and it had a kitchen addition done....some 40 years ago off the back end of a two story house built in 1940. Now I just signed the papers to purchase it and it can be built up to a two story on top of the kitchen area. It would add another 600 square feet. We'd add a full bathroom and a master bedroom. I came here mostly to see how you did the roof because mine slopes similar and the same direction.

I've been thinking of trying something like this myself. Mostly just a 4-5' bump out on the back of my garage for extra workshop space. It not needing to be house-level finished would make things a lot easier. I'm fine framing and putting in the work, I just get very stressed at the roof part, specially joining up to another existing roof like you did.

I have a 14x40 shed I converted into a 1 bedroom home and I’m looking at adding 2 additional rooms and 1 bathroom to it so my daughter, her husband and their son can live with me as I am getting physically weak and older even at 46 yr old. But, I don’t want to cut the side of my building for a doorway because we would want our personal space. So it would more like a duplex setting. Eventually I will cut through the wall to add a door to make it accessible for both sides. The only thing is my building will set on 2 or 3 center blocks high foundation and the add on will be about 16 inches below my floor level. Then a wrap around porch added with the capabilities of steps and wheelchair accessible ramp on the porch in 2 locations. 1 for crossing among the porch from house to house and then the other for access to the yard. Then I want to build a tornado shelter just 50 feet away from the home with a concrete sidewalk for the wheelchair. But I want the shelter above ground with a dirt mound on top of it. This would be because of water collection and the fear of drowning if the shelter is completely underground. The shelter can also be used for canned food storage for emergencies. I have 5 years to get this all done. Then I want to build another 2 bed 1 bath for my son just in case later in life he will need it. I’m on 5.5 acres so I have plenty of room.

It has a washer and dryer with two cupboards above it along with the hvac system to the side of it. With a big family, the room is stuffed full with kitchen appliances and 3-4 bins of laundry. I need to add a bedroom and bathroom. I bought my childhood home about 2 years ago. The house is close to 100 years old and we only have 1 bathroom for 6 people so it gets tense sometimes😂but there’s no way to add on without having to walk through someone else’s bedroom. Might have to just turn the dining room into a bedroom but the 3rd bedroom is on the other side of the dining room so someone will have traffic through their room so the one can get to theirs🤦🏻‍♂️I guess we’ll have to compromise lol. I enjoyed watching your video. I was thinking of redoing some trim and smaller jobs around my house but I’m not a carpenter, but a steel worker, and came across your video in search of ideas. I will definitely subscribe as soon as I post this comment.

Really appreciate you bringing us along with your project. I have a blacksmithing/knifemaking shop in my pole barn. I just had concrete poured and roughly 2/3s of it will be my shop (1800 sqft). I am in the process of making a grinding/finishing room/office for the colder months especially that will be about 10x16' with 8-foot ceilings with a loft above for storage. I had planned on using 16" centers on the ceiling joists but seeing you use 24" OC makes me think about going in that direction. Do you fear any kind of structural integrity issues? You guys get a lot more snow than we do in NE Indiana, and I really do not have to worry about that because I am not building a roof. However, I do want storage up there. Not steel as I have a different barn for that, just totes of stuff and maybe a bit of extra lumber.
For such a small project as mine I will only need like 4 more ceiling joists doing 16" OC.
I guess I am asking why you went 24" OC rather that 16" OC?
    Thanks again!

Awesome work! Really appreciate you showing us the process. A lot of skill here. I'd be curious if anyone could offer insights into the choice of foundation. Are those three concrete pillars going to be sufficient?

Any addition is at least a 2 person job. Unless you got every tool you already need and are a pro. Just my opinion.
