I usually sleep as much as possible on Thursday and Friday before the marathon(usually on Sunday) because I’m sometimes nervous Saturday night. I consume electrolytes based on heat and humidity. I try to run even splits every mile. And, like you said we need to consume so many more calories than the normal. I’m in the 60 grams/ hour range. I’ll try the 90g/hr range at my next marathon. And I’ll attach my electrolyte caps to my energy gels! Thank you Floris! And congratulations on a job well done at London! You finished strong!

The best mantra I've heard lately is "win or learn." It's easy to get stuck in your own head when a training run doesn't go to plan, but even a 'failure' is experience gained that can make you stronger when the next run starts.
    Amazing run, congrats!!

I have a friend who got his wheel last year in Tokyo and this marathon also happened to be recognized by Guinness World Records as the most people obtaining that wheel of medals. I just mentioned this because you touched my heart with your words of appreciation to your family. You really had me going as well. Im preparing for my first marathon in the midst of some chaotic but manageable issues at the same time. Congratulations on your great accomplishment and thank you so much for sharing your experience, wisdom and compassion.

Floris, my favourite lesson/takeaway from your London Marathon: take in plenty of gels/nutrition. I've just finished Boston, April 2024, and had to eat a few extra gels on the back half (Maurten Gels supplied) that I hadn't tried before! I have a pretty good stomach so wasn't a problem, fortunately. Thank you for your truly inspiring videos.

  • @swenderich
    @swenderich Před měsícem +7

Congrats on your sixth Star Floris, huge achievement! Many great lessons here, great advice. Hard to pick a favourite. For me personally, I have most dialled in and the hardest is the starting out conservatively. It's so hard to not get carried away because of how easy it feels, by the energy of the crowds, to get lured into the trap of 'banking some time' only to loose double that time in the second half of the race... I haven't mastered the negative split on the marathon yet!
On tip for something that gives me a lot of piece of mind on raceday: I always try to do a dry run of the pre-race routine (walking to the bagage drop of, walking to the start, knowing where the toilettes are, visualising where I'll do the warmup, etc) the day before. Come race day, I know exactly what to do and how long everything will take.
    Cheers from the Netherlands!

My favorite comment you made was to stay in the moment and be relaxed when it gets difficult towards the end of the marathon. Even before you showed us your stats (splits), I could tell that your pacing was excellent, from very early on, and maintained throughout. Not so easy with the excitement and all.
The emotion and the crying after, I believe, is part of the experience (unless one is a pro, where it is just another race). To me a marathon brings one beyond’, and the resulting emotion, with all the training, with all the support from the family, is priceless. Cry, baby, cry. There is chaos in the world, and for a few hours, with a few thousand others, a runnner’s communion has happened. One with the Universe.
    Apologies for the nostalgia.
    Well done mentor.

Congratulations Floris 🎉 so impressed by your humility and depth of knowledge and experience in running. From little tips to grab water at the end or to reach early to avoid the long queues, to nutrition as you go, everything counts. To top it all the best tip - when you are feeling lost or low, to think about the loved ones, the people who matter and must have made sacrifices at some stage to see you achieve what you have is priceless 👌👏🏽👏🏽 Highlighting a time stamp will not be sufficient. Fantastic video Floris! Congrats on completing the 6 Majors! I was running London as well on Sunday and I can relate all the emotions at the finish line and throughout the whole race. The shorts with pockets tips is something I will definitely implement in the future as the belt proved to be a bit too cumbersome to handle on the day. Keep it up! :)

Massive congratulations on the Sixth Star. So very well deserved. I love the raw emotion at the end. It’s an emotional journey. Without the support of loved ones in our lives, it’s near impossible to accomplish. Such wonderful takeaways. Always pace yourself. Too many runners get too emotional at the beginning. It leads to struggles at the end. So happy for you.

Congratulations Floris , great finish. I think there were many valuable lessons in this video starting with pacing yourself, fueling, enjoy the moment and be grateful and acknowledge those that supported you through the whole process and have supported you throughout life. I love the emotion at the end, I too get emotional but it's a great feeling. It is the culmination of months of hard work.
My lesson from my last marathon is to fuel, I joined a group and they only taught us about running, pacing, hill training etc., but never about fueling, so I only had breakfast, and then I went, I didn't carry water or took water throughout. I finished in 3:47 but recovery was so painful and it took a long time.

First, a big Congratulations on your 6th Star Floris!! I always enjoy your videos and this one was entertaining and informative and so real. I cried with you at the end. I ran London as well (my 3rd major and 19th marathon) and didn't have a great day, only because I was not mentally prepared for all of the walkers/costumes that slowed the runners in the middle and back of the pack to an extreme and also the noise level (I have PTSD and it was a bit overwhelming). However, I am grateful for the experience and being able to keep doing this at age 70. I loved all of your tips, but the "fuel early" (and often) is a lesson it took me a long time to learn. I would say for any heavy sweater out there (even in cool weather) make sure your hydration plan includes hyperhydrating and electrolytes the day/days before the race, and during the race. Sorry I missed you there.

Hey Floris, great to see you upload so soon after Sunday. Big thrill to see you in person for the shake-out amd raffle; very delighted with my Path Projects cap. The Path Projects gear looks awesome. I remember your two takeaways before the shake-out which you also mention in the video and that is to fuel up early on and watch the pace at the start - soooo true. V.important to maintain your taget pace; the euphoria can have you almost running at speed interval pace. Good advice from you which I passed on to our marathon team of 12 runners. Inspiring stuff, great to see you and hopefully bump into you at another event. 👍💪🤜🤛

When the going gets tough think of my friend Mark Ankers; throat cancer, no lower jaw, saliva glands, no feeling in his face to his chest, 18 hour life saving operation, bone grafts from his leg, he’s 49 and has a wife and daughter and through it all he completed London 2024. Use these people as your inspiration and those people around you who endure, support and love you no matter what. This is the only lesson you need to take away, you can do it.

Congratulations on the 6 star medal! This is truly a heartwarming moment😍! I would like to add the following idea to your request for experiences💡: I think you should never see yourself as successful on long runs, if you have run comfortably slowly at the end and then expect to automatically be faster in the race😅. The shorter speed units alone are not enough and longer, faster miles have to be built into long runs, especially at the end. This is my main insight for guaranteed fast times.🎉
