  • A shareholder recently asked Furukawa if Nintendo might get into using generative AI, and he was like, "Nah," and the guy was like, "WOAH!" and ran away. True story.

      This isn't really true. They've said on record that they have no passion for what they make and they only chase trends that are already popular.
      They also didn't make Palworld on a whim. They have a boss that's giving orders, so they're not really indie either. About as indie as games like Dave the Diver or Grow Up.
      And they're not novices either. They're novices to the game engine they're working with, but not game design in general. The game is just janky and "novice-like" because they have no guidance or standards to be held to.

      If the AI was actually good, and made exactly what you wanted, exactly how you wanted it, every time, like full blown mind blowing 2 hour long movies and art pieces, exactly to YOUR specifications, and you can't tell it was made by an AI vs humans. If it was able to completely avoid copyright entirely, like a human could, then, what's the problem?
      Why does it matter that it was trained on all other art that exists? It doesn't matter if it's "plagiarism" if everyone has it, why not use it if it works?
      Anyone making whatever they want however they want it. I believe far, far, less people would be clamoring to uselessly scream "PLAGIARISM" then, when it would probably be closer to plagiarism than ever to be honest.

      If these guys weren't around, videogaming would be an absolute wasteland full of predatory reckless practices with no escape. Nintendo forces the rest of the industry to straighten up its act.
      If they don't Nintendo takes all the power from them due to their excess.
      Nintendo has been checking the bullshit in this industry for 40 years & hardly anybody thanks them for it.
      Remember Jack Thompson, the moral crusader from the decade of the 2000s?
      If he got his way, a lot of things you see in videogaming would have been banned & you would have the clueless government involved ruining everything on artistic expression.
      But there Nintendo was quietly with its DS & Wii having their parental warnings on the startup screens & actually telling gamers to go outside & touch grass. What gaming company DOES that?! Hahaha!
      Nintendo like always has a healthy sense of social responsibility & they offset Jack Thompson's concerns.
      He can't call all of videogaming a Grand Theft Auto moral decayer with Nintendo around.
      So eventually he faded away. Nintendo quietly cleaned up the image for videogames.
      No, I disagree with you. Fanboy AWAY! Nintendo protects the entire videogame medium for the future.
      When Apple & Google turn everything into a Freemium wasteland, there's Nintendo to rehabilitate gaming.
      When PC power worship starts destroying countless developers causing a modern-day crash, there's Nintendo doing things the RIGHT way & setting the example for the surviving devs to follow.
      When Sony & Microsoft fool gamers into worrying about unnecessary things, there's Nintendo to remind everyone that THE GAME IS THE THING. The game & the way we play is all that matters.
      So long as Nintendo's here, we'll be able to pass down these works of art to future generations.
      We'll show them the importance of physical media. We'll show them the importance of positive messages.
      We'll show them the value in a safe gaming space free from predators & predatory practices.
      Gambling & Gaming are cousins if not siblings. Gambling is Gaming with a Predatory Nature intact.
      What we call Gaming is Clean Gaming free from the Predatory Nature & focused on Fun & Entertainment.
      The Gambling types will take over the business if someone doesn't uphold Clean Gaming.

Hard to rationally stay angry at them compared to the boom/bust hire/firing of companies like MSFT, or the corporate slop that Sony and others produce these days. I ask for a blue bird, I get a blue bird and it almost always looks the same. I could paint 100 blue birds and as hard as I tried to make them uniform, each one would be subtly different, because I am always changing and growing and learning. Every day, even minute I’m different, and that’s the beauty of art, that it’s about that moment of your life, that can never be recreated. AI just does what you tell it to do. Tell 25 5 year olds to draw a blue bird. Every single one will be different.

      Moreover, AI "art" can never be art, as art, on some level, requires meaning and intent, and machines are incapable of meaning. One thing I learned in a theory of automata class in university: the human brain operates by meaning, while machines operate by grammar. A machine will never understand what it is doing.

    The whole debate genuinely annoys me by just how irrationally aggressive everyone gets about it.
    Like, no, AI enthusiasts, AI can't and shouldn't replace human creative labour.
    And, no, anti-AI people, AI art won't nor can replace your jobs. It's low quality and instable. Policing the word 'art' or use of AI won't convince anyone of the actual problems with AI and AI art.

      @ProjectionProjects2.7182 Před 20 dny +1

      I think what the anti-AI people are concerned about though is that the tech will get so good that it eventually will replace them. The concern is not completely irrational, as the tech has gotten better but will it ever get good enough to replace peoples jobs? Who knows.

    The only way I'd like to see AI of this sort used in video games is to make NPC characters more reactive to the game world and the player, like that mod for Skyrim that connects to ChatGPT and lets you talk to any of the characters outside of their canned dialog.

    • @dingus_maximus
      @dingus_maximus Před 20 dny +7

      Personally, even that’s kinda lame imo. It’s a nice gimmick to mess with for a few minutes, but the dialog will usually be superficial at best and downright meaningless at worst, and eventually you’ll start to see how the responses either get really stale and samey or go completely off the rails. Even the best AI will fall apart after a while, because it simply can’t keep up with human creativity.

    • @foggy8298
      @foggy8298 Před 20 dny +3

      Nope, that would ruin worldbuilding and writing. The chat engine would need to constantly check to make sure it doesn't contradict itself on top of everything else, and that would make the game run horribly, on top of everything else that chat model would have to do, like making sure to talk in the same dialect the whole way through. It would be used as a justification to replace writers and would be genuinely pointless.
      Even in Skyrim, I'd much rather have less NPCs than have each NPC auto generate their own backstory and put bloat on the game's file size and ram usage. What about voice acting? what about player responses?
      Awful idea, sorry

    Generative AI is theft. It's theft because AI isn't conscious, and artists are, so their rights matter more.
    (And yes, there ARE some good uses for generative AI like... next-frame generation on video cards to drastically improve frame rates in modern games, trained purely on the data set of the images you and your game are generating, or even updated weather prediction models or things like that... But I honestly think what most corporations are using it for right now, skipping actually generating their own content in favor of stealing everything real writers, artists, and musicians have made to regurgitate it back at people in some sterile soulless form, is not just insulting artistically, it's outright theft that merely threatens to put the "starving" back into "artist".)

    • @Chris-jx4ij
      @Chris-jx4ij Před 20 dny +3

      Wouldn't that be the other way around? It's theft for artists to copy from other because they're conscious, and thus have the capability to know better
