4:48 - 4:51 David has an injury to his vocal cords that he had repaired and that repair ruptured, he gets acid that agitates the injury. Just before this performance The band had to cancel a few performances so he can rest his voice. If I remember correctly this was none of the first if not the first performance after that break. He sounds amazing but David is very hard on himself.

From what I hear he *hates* auto-tune, 'cause he feels like it's cheating.
He's not only classically trained, he's also operatically trained as well as cantorial, so for them to use auto-tune on any of his tracks, sick or not, is kind've an insult to the guy.

My interpretation of this song, revised:
This song is written with two separate people or consciousnesses singing
it. Those that are waking up and those that have been awake for a very
long time. The first, third and fifth verse is sung from the perspective
of the unawakened and the second and forth verse are sung from the
    perspective of the awakened.
    Hello, darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
    Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
    Still remains
    Within the sound of silence
Hello, darkness, my old friend is about people that have been kept in
the dark and they're telling the darkness that they are experiencing
something new in their vision. They (the awakened/aware ones) planted
the seeds of truth/Light, and they are just starting to become aware.
In restless dreams I walked alone
    Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a streetlamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
    That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
There are fewer of the awakened, and they feel as if they are alone
under the Light of truth, because they refused to by into the lies the
dark has been trying to feed them. Then one day they saw a crack in
the armor of dark, they saw a opportunity to break the sound of silence.
And in the naked light I saw
    Ten thousand people, maybe more
    People talking without speaking
    People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
    No one dared
    Disturb the sound of silence
And in that moment they saw all of the light workers/star seeds
    (awakened Ones) telling
those that were still asleep the truth/Light, through telepathy
those that were sleeping heard and saw the truth/Light in a very subtle
    way,
but yet they couldn't share this Light/truths with anyone for fear of
    being attacked
by those that controlled the sound of silence.
They wrote the truth in songs, the truth had to be give covertly as not
to disturb the sound of silence (the dark). And when the people became
    aware of the
Light/truth and realized that they had been in darkness the whole time,
    it really pissed them off.
"Fools," said I, "You do not know
    Silence like a cancer grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells of silence
They reached out to those still in slumber, trying to give them
Light/truths, but they wouldn't open their minds to new truths, instead
remained in the sound of silence.
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets
Are written on the subway walls
    And tenement halls
And whispered in the sounds of silence."
The people were so caught up in working hard to pay for all of the
things, the boats, cars, electronics, all of the toys that they covet.
They couldn't see or hear the truth, they were too distracted by
consumerism. The awakened/prophets have been trying to tell them through
their songs and poems, and that whisper of Light/truth awakened the
people from their slumber and they became ONE. Did you notice the ship
sailing into the Light at the end of the studio version?

The true power of music my friend. To the people in the audience it wasn't a performance I hope it was a moment for them. Because with 760 million views I hope the true words and lyrics reach all of their hearts and that no voices are silent. Music has no boundaries. Great breakdown and I learned a lot from you.

The original version (Simon & Garfunkel · 1967) was a warning against the rise of technology (Television / now 'social media') which was causing less and less 'human interaction'. Think about how people brag they have 6,000 'friends' on Facebook but may never have actually met them, or how much time you look at your phone instead of the world around you (like when they are driving and end up getting into a car wreck killing someone) or how people will 'text' someone whom is literately sitting next to them, rather than just 'talk' to them.
Disturbed's version is equated to the 'rage' of someone because those warnings were not listened to - and how now its becoming so 'uncomfortable' to even just 'talk' to someone without someone getting offending or being offensive, because we are now, more and more, creating this warped sense of reality - and it just feels easier just to use 'social media' instead of our own voices, which further creates that disparity.
The short version is its a warning about humanity losing what makes us 'human' - and instead embracing the 'neon god' (tech/social media) which lets us 'communicate' but also leaves us in silence - as we've forgotten HOW to communicate with each other simply as human beings... like we did for thousands of years till now...

David was a bit under the weather in this performance, and so the sound technician decided to add a bit of auto-tune in parts of the song, which (quite understandable) made David absolutely livid. I wouldn't want to be in that sound technician's shoes when meeting a furious David Draiman after the performance.

I love this SO much. I liked the Simon and Garfunkel version when I was young, mainly due to the meaning of the lyrics. In the interim, I have studied and sing vocal music - in an acapella choir - for more than 40 years. I have a low contralto voice. Between the interpretive technique of David's voice and its expressiveness, I must say "I get it" - totally. Bravo!!!

The nasal sound David has here is because he had the flue at this time.
There is actually a bit of autotune on this version. However, this was done by the broadcast studio. Disturbed didn't know this was being done. David said that he was angry when he found out about this.

He was also very upset bc the Conan sound engineers turned on auto tune for the performance and he didn’t want it. Because of this , David said he will never perform on that show again lol
If you pay attention at the VERY beginning when he starts singing, he hears the auto tune and he does a slight grimace at it.
