    Kevin and Avi (and now Matt) work closely together to get the beat and drive of the song. Kevin is a human drum machine, but it's Avi that helps those beats get that Bass thump. They're such a team that Shawn Stockman (Boyz to Men) dubbed them "Meat" and "Potatoes" for consistently holding their arrangements together during their run in the Sing Off (TV competition show that got them their start).

Beat boxer Kevin Olusola deserves huge credit for the techno beat, alsong with bass Avi Kaplan, that drives this work. It earned them their first Grammy Award (of three, so far)...I know you recently reacted to Angielina Jordan's cover of Bohemian Rhapsody but you shoud really check out their cover as well. • @mecfstraveler
    @mecfstraveler Před 3 lety +13

    Hi! 👋🏻 I just wanted to give a tiny bit of History on this song and it kind of leads into the story of the group coming together. Ben Bram won a Grammy for his work on this video when Pentatonix won their Grammy. It was filmed in one member's closet and another member's kitchen. Ben is a freaking genius with how to record acapella! He and Scott met in college which is what kicked off Pentatonix as a group because Ben had heard The Trio on CZcams and told Scott he should get his friends back together, get a beatboxer and a bass an audition for The Sing-Off that was an acapella competition airing on NBC at that time (Season 3, 2011). So Scott and Kirstie dropped out of college and Mitch skipped his high school graduation while Scott found Kevin doing cello boxing on CZcams and Ben located Avi through the music community. The trio had sang together in High School and were all best friends. Their dream was to bring acapella into mainstream music and give it a new sound but Avi and Kevin had never worked with them before or with each other. Oh! I forgot! Kevin (the beatboxer) dropped out of Yale to audition with this group and both Kevin and Avi had seen The Trio on CZcams before they were contacted and had thought the kids were really talented so jumped at the chance to audition with them. The first time all five sang together in person was the night before their morning audition for The Sing-Off. I think everybody remembers that they won and then Sony drop them from the label the very next week saying they didn't believe acapella music could be competitive in mainstream music. And Pentatonix got to work and proved Sony wrong. A lot of hard, hard work on their part and very faithful patrons helped them to keep going in spite of being told no over and over again! And Ben Bram, that friend of Scott's, has gone on to become one heck of a producer! He's their go-to guy!

    I have been a fan of this mashup since it came out. Did you know that the audio for this track was recorded in Avi's bed room closet, the video was filmed in his kitchen. They also disclosed they spent a total of $400,00 on this video. To me that makes it even more mind blowing

    Outstandingly astute reaction, Adam. You see and appreciate not only the song, but all that is required to put their performances together. Don't miss their stunning collaboration with Todrick to create the Wizard of Ahhhs video, which is very different from this but so very inventive and creative and with the perfect songs chosen for the mash-up. It will blow you away.

    I’m not familiar with Daft Punk, and it actually took me a while looking at reactions to this medley before I understood it was a medley and not an original song LOL That says something about how seamlessly this was put together 😊

    They only record songs that they can perform well in live shows. So no studio tricks, etc. The budget for this video was $400 and filmed in a closet. Awesome group! I enjoyed your reaction, comments, and am a new subscriber.

    A quick history of this video.
    This wasn't long after they won season 3 of the sing off. They won $200 thousand and a recording contract. They moved to LA and a week later the company dropped them. They took the money and started making youtube videos. This was recorded in a closet and filmed in a kitchen. They won a Grammy for it.
    2 words to remember hope and joy.

    I'm one of your newer subscribers that helped push you to 15K. I'm really enjoying your reactions and found you from your Diana Ankudinova reactions. Your reaction to Angelina Jordan's Bohemian Rhapsody performance was really touching. You've introduced me to some other performers, such as Aurora. After seeing your reaction to your first listen to Pentatonix, I could tell that you were going to love this one.
    Given how much you enjoyed hearing Avi on the Hallelujah reaction, I would recommend checking out another a capella group, Home Free. My favorite of theirs is Man of Constant Sorrow. You will also appreciate Avi's appearance with them on their cover of Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire.

    Hi Adam,
    I'm really glad that I bumped into your reaction of this song. I am a huge Pentaholic and this is one of my favourites of theirs. (I'm sure I've made a dent in the millions of views that this song has.) I love that you know Daft Punk well enough to know some of the words to the songs and that you were able to appreciate how much effort must have gone into the arrangement, the recording and the editing.
    Have a lovely evening,
    Easter

    Avi Kaplan who is the bass has since left the group and has gone on to a solo career writing and singing song that is in his heart. Just signed with a major record company and has dropped some of his new work...check out Change on the Rise which has almost 7 million views here on CZcams, Chains, Otherside, It knows me just to name a few. You won't be sorry! BTW Avi is either an E2 or G1 depending on which song he is singing. I could go on and on about Avi's talent! Just magnificent! Enjoy!

    You better start a list, lol. Their catalogue is huge and not one song disappoints, in my opinion. Also, of your feeling froggy and love origin stories go watch their performances on Sing Off (which they won). Mitch, Kirstie and Scott were 19 at the time (babies!!), and even then their talent was undeniable! ❤️

    Another group you may enjoy is Vocal Point, especially their Nearer my God to Thee. Yes, it's a religious song, but they do to it what this group did to the Hallelujah song. It'll give you goosebumps.

  • @bbwng54
    @bbwng54 Před 3 lety

    Hi Adam, they have so many performances that are excellent. The few that I would suggest include:
    1) "Bohemian Rhapsody" - enough said
    2) "Evolution of Music" - they have many 'evolution' videos of well known singers but this one is one that I think you will enjoy, as they sing many familiar songs from many genres through the decades
    3) "Mary Did You Know"- as we get closer to the holidays, this is a must; each member has their own turn to shine, including Kevin Olusola (beatboxer) who has a very nice voice.
    I think one reason your channel has grown rapidly is that you have intelligent, astute, and critical comments and pick up on things that many reactors fail to mention. You spend time discussing each performance which shows off your knowledge of music and good comments.
    Among the large number of great singers out there, there are 3 very popular and world class singers (in my opinion) who often show up with reactors- you have seen Dimash and Morissette. The 3rd of this 'trinity' is So Hyang of South Korea. She is a Contemporary Christian Music/gospel singer who is technically flawless (according to virtually all all vocal coaches/ teachers) while singing with emotion (there is a video of vocal coaches even crying). She is not well known because she sings for God and to comfort people going through difficulties (note her song choices), and not for fame and money; she has turned down international offers. She is the queen of the mixed voice due to perfect technique and reaches very high notes to emote (not to show off). Each of her performances are mini-masterpieces. I suggest:
    1) Arirang Alone
    2) Your Raise Me Up (2018)
    3) Everyone- this 7 minute song is often considered her greatest masterpiece; she said it was her hardest song due to breath control.
