When I was like 5 I think, I didn’t understand the complexity of CZcams, but all I knew is that it was a website where I could watch Alvin & The Chipmunk videos. I vividly remember watching Boys Of Rock N Roll over and over again. This movies soundtrack truly is unmatched (aside from Wolfman of course)

Love this. Thank you for talking about this because I feel this is such an underrated Chipmunk property. Also the fact that they were drug mules for rich people is such an 80s move.

Even as a kid, it felt like a thinly contrived reason to get the Chipmunks and the Chipettes traveling around the world in hot air balloons. It's awesome so we didn't care and we just rolled with it.
As a passionate, dedicated, long time member of the AATC fandom (over ten years!), I can say for certain that each and every one of us is absolutely thrilled to see someone so passionate about our beloved film. TCA is so precious to us that we dedicate the entire month of May to celebrating it (it was released on May 22nd 1987!) It's very rare to see people outside the fandom talking about TCA at all aside from a casual "oh, I remember that!". You're right, the AATC franchise is often ridiculed and treated like a joke, and so is its fandom. So for something like this to pop up in our searches, it makes our entire week. I was certainly smiling throughout this entire video.
Thank you for this. Thank you for treating the AATC franchise (and its fans) with the dignity and respect it deserves. When TCA Month rolls around again next year, we hope you'll join us in our festivities. Man it feels so nice to hear someone else talk about how poignant the Chipettes mother song is.
I distinctly remember staying up one night as a kid and thinking about how they might have been thinking of Olivia, the orphan girl that raised them before they were forced to flee or risk being exploited by her abusive orphanage runner, as they were singing and it hit me way too hard.
I know the feeling I lost my mum to cancer and the a nice touch to think about Olivia suprize she doesn't apper in more episodes
The personal human touches in traditional animation is why I love it too - there is just so much character and love put in to every frame and it is noticeable. It's one of the reasons I was so happy to see Spiderverse which adopted that traditional look. I really hope we get more traditionally animated movies again

Passionate chipmunk fan here and I’ve got the answer to your question about the Chipettes and Miss. Miller. Because TCA was in production while the 80s series was still running, the script for it takes place chronologically before the girls moved in with Miss. Miller. They’re still in their old treehouse like seasons 1-3 of the 80s show.
Also, Janice was recently interviewed by Saturday Morning Rewind and revealed that Gettin’ Lucky was a song from another scrapped movie production that was gifted to them to use in TCA. That’s why it seems like an original, but it also seems like it wasn’t made for a movie geared toward younger kids.

Wait, where was it confirmed that TCA takes place chronologicaly before the chipettes move in with Miss Miller, because otherwise there's nothing to say this is in that exact same continuity.

Sure it’s never confirmed that it’s the same continuity, but there’s also nothing that confirms it isn’t.
My guess is that Miss. Miller was developed as the babysitter for TCA and then they liked her so much that she wound up incorporated into the 80s series as a mother figure for the Chipettes.
Wolfman and Chipmunk Adventure are the two best chipmunk animated films and finally someone is talking about it!😂I hold such wonderful nostalgia for both, but especially the chipmunk adventure for its amazing soundtrack and colorful 80s animation (I actually have two frames of filmstrip from the movie and they're my prized possessions!)
Man, I forgot how insanely good-looking the animation was for this movie. I had no idea so many prominent animators worked on it, but it definitely shows. It's crazy to me that it doesn't have a much bigger following just from an animation enthusiast standpoint, but I hardly ever hear it get talked about. Huge shame.
I also used to watch this movie all the time as a kid, so much that I instantly recognized the opening music. I still remember my aunt taking me to the theater to see it (yeah, I'm an 80's baby). She didn't tell me what we were going to see, just that it was "a surprise," and when I saw the title The Chipmunks Movie come up I was ecstatic. That tape recorder scene ("David, are you drunk?") still absolutely kills, and even watching the penguin scene in this video made me tear up.
It's such an underrated film with some of the most gorgeous animation on par with Disney, at times, and I'm really glad you're giving it the love it deserves.

The Dan Haskett stuff transcends this vid past a typical review or even a typical gushing. While it can't be overstated how much of a collaborative effort animation is, really focusing on individual contributions I think gives you that much bigger an appreciation to the whole, and I believe we could definitely use some more of that across CZcams.
One of "the" movies that made my childhood. Always has such an important place in my heart. The My Mother scene hits 10 times harder as an adult. And the entire soundtrack is permanently ingrained in my mind.

the box office faliure of the Black Cauldron was serendipitous for this movie to have so many heavy hitters as animators.
Probably the best review of the Chipmunk Adventure I ever seen. This and A Goofy Movie is why I became a lover of animation, and this movie especially made me fall in love with the chipmunks.

As someone who grew up with this series, I always just assumed that this series took place during the time period before the girls met Miss Miller, and were still living in their treehouse. The one that they lived in during the episodes like "The Masked Chipmunk". This was probably the first time the girls met her, which led to them coming up with the idea of them living with her in the next season of the show.
I don’t care what anyone says this movie is really good it’s pure adventure comedy, I watched it when I was a kid and I loved it, truly one of the most underrated animated films in the 80’s and has one of the best songs in a non Disney animated film at the time with The Girls of Rock N Roll.
This movie was my middle school hyperfixation (not my proudest years) but it was such a beautiful made film. Glad to see you're covering it

It was 4th grade to me and I cringe looking back. School was hell for me though so it brought me comfort.
I can relate, I used to watch it a lot in middle school bc it’s how I coped from all the school drama I was in. Since it was my comfort movie back then, ofc it made me feel better. I even rewatched TCA a couple times in my junior and senior year of hs and I got sm nostalgia❤

I never saw this movie but I'll listen to Tariq talk about damn near anything. You love to see smooth movements in animation. I'm no animator but when a movie gets the frames from one position to the next just right it looks so fluid and lovely, and this movie looks filled with that.
Man it’s been a while since I’ve seen this movie, I forgot how fun it was! Fun fact, The Chipmunk Adventure was actually my introduction to Alvin and the Chipmunks. Like, when the first trailer for the 2007 movie came out, I was probably the only 7 year old asking “why doesn’t Alvin have his hat?”

Had this movie at my grandma house in the middle of nowhere, me, my brother and my 2 cousins would watch this on repeat every other day after being outside everyday. The ultimate nostalgic movie
My only prior exposure to this movie was the snake charmer scene. One of my animation classmates showed it to the rest of us and he described it as “the most inappropriate song in a kids movie” 😂 I’ll pay it forward by sending this review to the rest of the gang

Its been years since I've seen any of the older Chipmunks movies, as a kid The Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein was my "constantly rent" movie. This had made me wanna revisit those movies so badly
I remember getting my hands on any of the animated series on DVD either from the Stop N Shop DVD section to the library where I knew which ones I watched and not. Even I'm biased to say I preferred Wolfman over Frankenstien I digged a lot of the 80s/90s cartoon, even if I prolly didnt see all of it due to the weird episode choices on those DVDs.
Loved this movie growing up. Perfect kid-logic premise and wonderful execution, but I never realized before how gorgeous it is. You really know how to help us see these things through your eyes.
This was my favorite movie as a kid and I always felt so embarrassed for it. I really appreciate how much you go into why the chipmunks franchise is so appealing because I was like relentlessly bullied for it as a kid and never understood why I liked it so much when it was supposed to be cringey and bad. This week has probably also been the worst week of my life and this video dropping is probably the one thing that’s made me happy amongst all the bad shit happening. Thank you so much Tariq and never stop making videos on the obscure stuff that means a lot to you.
5:00 It's because the actors talked much slower than normal when recording the lines so that it would sound good once it got sped up/pitched
To this day my mom and I still joke about the "David are you drunk?" line. I wore out my VHS copy and noticed on the DVD 5.0 audio lines are missing such as Brittany saying "Dream on Tiny Tim" to the prince. Switch to the 2.0 audio and that line is there! The "My Mother" song is beautiful and sad. My DVD came with the soundtrack and these songs are great!

I just noticed that Alvin lost the real race the same way he lost at the video game. He took a dangerous shortcut and got attacked by crocodiles; what clever foreshadowing.

I watched this movie a lot as a kid. Besides already loving Chipmunks, the "travel around the world" plot really resonated with my childhood sense of imagination and whimsy, much in the same way as Spirited Away or the Sailor Moon movies did with their dream aesthetics.
Okay, I finished the video and it was just as amazing as I thought it would be! The point you made about the Chipettes not staying with Ms. Miller blew my mind! I thought they were staying with her the whole time but you're right! Who were they staying with?! That makes the whole My Mother song/ scene hit so much harder.
Also, I love that you interviewed one of the animator's from the film. It's always so nice to listen to animator's talk about which scenes they've animated and how the shows they've worked on are put together. It just makes me appreciate animation so much more and it definitely made me love this movie so much more. Side note: Diamond Dolls is hands down the best song in the movie and they don't even play the whole song! It's such a bop!

Yesss, I feel like people don’t talk about this movie enough! It was one of my favorites growing up. I love the sense of adventure that it gives me. All of the songs live in my head rent free. There’s times I’ll just remember this movie out of the blue and immediately do a CZcams search in order to watch it. :)
For me, the highest points of the film doesn't erase the bad parts but are so well done, it makes me love all the effort put into it.

So much talent and skills for a flawed story (and outdated racist jokes) just shine through it. It's not a much watch but the Chipmunk Adventure deserves to be recommended for fans of pre digital animation.
Ohhh, the memories! Such good music, such good animation... Girls/Boys of Rock & Roll was my everything back then, and Eleanor was my kindergarten crush (probably because she was the one who cared so much about helping the cute little penguin. Still can't watch her song without tearing up)
This was my first exposure to Chipmunks, and it's still my favorite next to the Werewolf movie. I still have the VHS. The amount of times I rewound the tape to that Boys/Girls of Rock n Roll song just to hear it again. Ah! Sweet Chritsmas

They're popular as fuck in Mexico, and I grew up with them. They're probably the reason I got into music.
A bunch of their covers actually have arguably better arrangements then the originals, no lie.
There's even this complete maniac on soundcloud that takes Chipmunk songs and slows them down to make goth/post punk, dark, bass-filled, witchcore type shit. I can't get enough of it.

I remember watching this movie on... I think HBO or Starz on demand... I can't remember. But being a chipmunks fan as a kid and this was the only chipmunks related movie I saw (the 2007 movie wasn't out yet) I was hooked. I honestly had really fond memories for it.. with "My Mother" being my favorite scene and the first time I cried during a movie.
Holy shit this animation & background painting is beautiful. I love how the female villain has brown outlines and the male villain has black ones, it looks so good and really emphasizes her femininity. I can tell you had a great time making and editing this. Can't wipe this fat grin off my face.

I am 40 actual earth years old. The snippet of the opening overture you played got me just as hyped as it did when I was a kid. I was physically unable to listen to any of the song during the section on "My Mother." This movie feels like a fever dream but it really happened.
This video made me smile like that baby getting her picture taken in A Goofy Movie, especially when you quoted, “I don’t even know where the LOUVRE is!” Thank u for making this, this really took me back! Learning about who worked on it just makes it that much more special!
I'm so so so happy that this movie impacted someone as strongly as it did me. This is forever in my top 5 of all time. The use of color, the exaggerated fluidity of motion, the flaws, the weird cadences, the rawness of the whole experience. Hearing someone quote along with the opening scenes just like I do was music to my soul. Thank you ❤️

This movie was sometimes shown occasionally in the early to mid '90s (a lot of leftovers from the '80s were kinda shown off again for kids in the '90s, such as The Last Unicorn). This interview was really well done and really enjoyed the vid!
And hoo-boy, realizing that parts of this movie had a child-friendly racist Cannibal Holocaust scene is a trip! Not surprised my memory blanked out of that part...

I didn't even grow up with this movie. I discovered it as an adult, but it has become unironically one of my absolute favorite movies. It's the one I choose to watch when I'm feeling sick or stressed or just need something comforting to watch. It's like a bowl of animated hot chicken soup. I love it and I love to see it getting the attention it deserves.
I saw this movie for the first time and thought it was phenomenal. It still holds up decades later. Also, “Getting Lucky” being a song in an animated kids movie is PEAK 80’s 😂😂

I always remember this film as the one that sort of ruined other Chipmunks joints for me lol But in a good way. It's just...man, it's gorgeous. Traditional animation like this always got me good back then, especially in the face. Haskett's character animation there has been on repeat in my brain for EVER now. The Chipettes especially were the funniest, these girls get all the best lines. Quality stuff still

The Chipmunks talk that way because that's how the Chipmunks talk. It's like their signature. Originally it may have been difficult to hear their sped-up voices without some enunciational emphasis. But now it's part of what makes those characters those characters, like Shaggy having a cracky voice and saying "like" a lot.
I used to be obsessed with Alvin and the Chipmunks as a child. I remember in third grade I brought my chipmunk Adventure DVD to school so that we could watch it. I tried to draw them all of the time.
Definitely a classic film, underrated at its finest. Not only the animation so fluid and on point, the movements of frame by frame is outstanding especially when the chipettes and the chipmunks runs towards the main setting when the girls and boys of rock n roll starts is well done, nothing was off or inconsistent. This is a beautifully animated gem, and Dan Hatchett always been a favorite artist of mine, I was amazed he worked on this film too. This movie lays a special place for my childhood, I'd so mimic the dances, and sing loud and vivid in my bedroom replaying the songs back to back lol drove my parents crazy. I'm glad my grandparents got this for me on my 6th birthday xD in 1999 I was literally obsessed with this movie growing up, it was that dope, and well written...This and Wolfman were classics man.
I watched this VHS so much as a kid that I ruined it. I couldn't for the life of me find it online anywhere so I bought a DVD off of ebay a couple years back. Honestly movie still slaps the soundtrack is bomb. Honestly as a musical theater nut I killed that tape by rewinding the songs alone. Specifically boys and girls of rock and roll. It's the beauty in hand drawn animation to not only get to see someone's signature on it but to know how much passion has to go into each scene to get the emotional beats across. I love the chipmunk movies of this time for this exact reason the fluidity and movement of the animation is just top notch and really just gets better the older I get and they more I learn about my favorite art form.
Man, I never noticed just how spectacular the animation in this movie is, but this video definitely made me take notice and see this movie in a whole new light. This movie seriously doesn't get enough love. This film needs to be shown and studied in EVERY animation class as part of the mandatory curriculum.

I worked on the TV show starting right after the feature was done. One of my first jobs was to go through a whole house full of cels and backgrounds and pare it down to just the good stuff. There were a lot of gorgeous backgrounds and poses. After that, I was the associate producer on the TV shows and specials, and we kept trying to bring the quality level up by using the designs from the feature as models. It didn't really work. But we made a higher splat on the wall than Ruby Spears did!
That’s so funny because you can literally tell that’s what happened! Like I’ve always noticed the big difference. These models that were meant to be fully animated were limited in the second half of the 80s cartoon. I still like those designs way more than the Ruby Spears one, but they always felt restricted when animated.

@@ToonrificTariq We did a few episodes with Fred Wolf Films to fill out the syndication package. They did a much better job with the new models than DIC did. But NBC had veto power over the studio we used and they wouldn’t approve Fred Wolf.
I loved this movie as a kid I can’t tell you how many times I rewatched it, the rock and roll song awakened my love for animation.
The most interesting part of Alvin and the Chipmunk meet the Wolfman having the DJ/MH play is that many later on saw Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde as a science fiction version of the Werewolf myth, of a seemingly sweet and harmless man turning into an often unrecognizable, inside, and out, monster. It makes you wonder if the creators of the Chipmunk movie knew about that understanding, or just saw parallels between Theodore's transformation into a wolfman and Jekyll permanetly into Hyde!
Other than than, the Halloween movies and this one were a big part of my childhood!
This was one of the BEST movies growing up. I haven't seen this movie since I was a kid, but I know it will still hold up. Hell _Alvin & the Chipmunks_ as a whole still holds up to this day and the newest series on Nickelodeon is proof of that. First time I watched that series, it felt like I went back in time because it was like a continuation of the late 80s early 90s cartoon series and ALL the memories came flowing back.

Goddamn Im so glad this movie actually exists and wasn’t some weird dream I had as a kid.. watching this brought back so many memories, that penguin scene used to strike just the right chord in my heart. In general, your channel has unearthed a lot of forgotten movies or tv shows that had a major role in inspiring me as a kid.

Back when I was 13 I was really into Ren and Stimpy ( yeah I know 😬), I watched it so much I could tell what artist animated what scene and felt so proud of myself for being able to do so! Glad I'm not the only one who does this too!

This movie gives me an indescribable joyful feeling when I watch it. It feels like a nostalgic comfort movie, despite me not growing up with it. I think it’s because of my nostalgia towards the 80s series that blends in with this movie to create an odd but comforting faux-nostalgia feeling. The movie has an overall distinctly 80s/90s vibe which also blends with other old cartoons I grew up with. I’m also nostalgically attached to every piece of Alvin media ever created for some reason.
I would watch this over and over on on VHS as a child, the soundtrack is still embedded into my brain
I used to watch this movie all the time!!! The Chipettes' My Mother song in the air balloon is SO GOOD. Plus I had to pause multiple times to stop laughing so I could hear what you were saying this is such a great video

I didn't know about this movie until now but damn it's beautiful. Like the scene in the beginning where Theodor talks about feeling guilty about tricking miss miller is insane! Not just accurate lip sync but the expression and timing is soooooo tasty.
God to think my nostalgia for this one wasn't even from watching the movie as a kid, but from the nostalgia critic video I watched in like middle school.

Something that I appreciate about your videos is the attention that you draw to the animation itself. Obviously, animation is incredibly time-consuming and detail-oriented work (and a bunch of other adjectives!), but every time you point out details like how Dan Haskett draws a hand or how lose the body movements are, all I can do is sit and think about how much work goes into these quick flashes of movement and how they all fit together into a whole. Also, great movie choice! I haven't thought about this one in a long time :D.

Man I’ve been DYING for this retrospective ever since I saw the other Alvin vids on this channel! (Also how I discovered Tariq!) Chipmunk Adventure was one of 3 movies I would always rent every time we went to Blockbuster as a kid, the other two being Cats Don’t Dance and The Gumby Movie. I tell ya, everytime Tariq just started quoting alongside the characters, that was a vibe. If anyone knows, I’ve always wondered who animated those close up shots of Elenor during “My Mother.” Always thought it was Glen Keene because of the subtle acting, which remind me of his shots of Beast, but I’d love to know either way.

I'm glad someone finally took the time to appreciate this classic. I've loved this one since I was a kid, so I got to spend the last 30 years of my life coming to appreciate all its little nuances. Even when my old VHS copy went missing during the many moves my family and I had, I still managed to snag a copy at Wal-Mart years back just so I could experience it all over again. In fact, watching this made me want to pop it in for old time's sake.
I nearly thought this was a fever dream I made up in my head, but I remember seeing this movie as a kid. I swear I got this VHS tape from my older cousins back in the day, but I could never find it again. Thank you for reminding me about this gem!
