  • "Hawai’i Aloha" features dozens of Hawai‘i’s top artists across many genres, and over 1,000 youth from 10 Hawaiian charter schools in one epic song. Recorded live across 27 locations, this is Hawaiiʻs most widely known song, used to close important gatherings of all sizes. It is a song of unity and Aloha ‘Aina (Aloha for one’s birthplace, land and home).
About this collaboration: Mana Maoli, a Hawaiian nonprofit, teamed up with Playing For Change and 4 Miles as part of their Mana Mele Project, which features a solar mobile studio and a Music & Multimedia Academy. Alongside the youth - on campus, in real-world settings, and in this video, is the "Mana Mele Collective" - over 200 artists, engineers, and filmmakers who donate their time and talents to mentorships, recordings, and concerts in support of these schools. We hope you enjoy watching this collaborative effort as much as we enjoyed creating it!

I spent my high School years in Hawaii and have always loved this song. I now live in South Carolina. Several years ago I was at work-I'm a nurse, and I had an elderly patient who was visiting her family. She was from Hawaii and really didn't have a lot to say. I played this video/song for her and she began to sing. we both had tears streaming down our faces. One of the best moments I have had as a nurse.

I was born and raised in Maui and this song means alot to me when I listen to it, I’m not Hawaiian but I’ll always remember my Kumu telling me a story about this song. My school singing it together at may day, never forget the times.
But in present time my heart breaks due to losing the historic town Lahaina because of a brush fire, not only that we have lost many family members and people. I’m disappointed in the tourists for still swimming in the same waters people drowned in trying to escape from the fire, now I will never forget this song as I hear people singing it in sadness because their homes were burned down and families are missing or dead. I want people to know how much this hurts us. Native Hawaiians are dying and many tourists have no sympathy for them, if you’re planning to fly to maui just for a tour please donate your ticket instead, and fly somewhere else.

I used to take care of grandmas with Alzheimer's, and as part of the disease, one of them was prone to fits of paranoia, hostility, and fear. She was having one of those fits when I turned on the TV, and at the end of the Japanese lantern ceremony they were playing this song.
It's like a light came on in her face. She KNEW this song, and she started humming, then singing, then got up and started dancing hula. She went from angry, confused and afraid, to excited and young again.
The power of music, especially in elderly patients with dementia, is so beautiful to see. She was able to end that night peacefully, and went to bed contented for the next few hours.

I'm a firefighter with HFD, and part of the three dozen men who were sent to aid Maui FD last week. We worked alongside their firefighters, many of whom had lost family, friends, and homes in Lahaina. On the night before we were set to return to Oahu, we all held hands and sang this together-- no instruments, no drums, just our voices filling the fire training center. I've sung this song before, but after that night, it holds much more meaning to me.

I am not hawaiian, and only managed to visit once, because a cousin lived there and had married a hawaiian. And for a few hours I visited (this was 45 years ago). His mother was a full-blooded Hawaiian, and I was able to talk to her for a few minutes. I will never forget it. As I left she told me, "remember, aloha mean love". Absolutely stunning. My mom was born in Aiea in 1932 she was Japanese by birth but always Hawaiian by nature. The kindest most loving person. She saw the bombing of Pearl harbor and it changed her life. The Americans closed her Japanese school and Buddhist temple so she had to give up her Japanese name and pick an American name at 9 years old.Something she fondly remembers she also went to missionary school. So she went from Nanko to Ruth.My Mother had 6 sisters and 2 brothers and they were all welcome into the Hawaiian community after that day. They closed their schools but the Hawaiians accepted them in there schools. So all my Aunties and uncles say they are Hawaiian first. They have the most positive view of what happen to them no bad feelings had a great life in Hawaii.Wish all people could have as much courage as Hawaiian people in accepting people from other cultures. My family wish for all people.

The legacy of Hawaii rests with the Kama'aina. I know of no better tribute to its legacy than this mele. In these times, most recently the past two weeks, the life lessons we teach to our children are everything. Be mindful of your children and the lessons you teach, push them to do their best, and never hold back on praising their efforts and correcting them when they need guidance. Mahalo nui for this reminder of that.

We the original people of the land all of us natives have a deep connection to our homeland. The land was a gift to our people we were in trusted to care for all our relatives. From the two leged too the four leged creatures. Today we are standing up for your ancestors both human and non human. Because its time we heal our land. We have never left our land we have just forgotten it is our land. We are learning again who we are and who we must be. This song reminds of that one day the Kingdom of Hawaii will be free once again .

First time I heard this song, was at a Trans Hawaiian, Christmas party, I was new to Hawaii (1988) , maybe a year and a half, working as a tour bus driver, at the end of the festivities everyone formed a circle, held hands and sang this song, it was one of the most beautiful events I had ever experienced. Today I always tell people their are two types of Hawaiians...Born and Raised, or Plan to live the rest of their life in Hawaii, I`m the latter.

Max Youngblood I'm the second type as well! I live on the other side of the world but dream about Hawaii every single day. The islands, the culture and the energy just seem so beautiful and so suitable for me. I don't feel connected to the place and the country I live in, but every time I think of Hawaii, even though I've never been there, I think about it as my future home. I really hope that my dream will come true. Until then, I'll continue surfing, playing my ukulele and drawing hibiscus flowers all over my notebooks...

Just today I stated to my daughter about how the Hawaiian people had a King that ruled their land and their people and they lived in harmony with the land and the inhabitants and then other people came and took control of their land and their people. This song literally pulls at the heart strings and if the soul is in touch with the love of the people and the land there is no way a person won't have tears rolling down their cheeks. I have never been to Hawaii in this life, but someday I will make it there before I pass so that I can feel the love of their land and its people. God bless you all and thank you so much for a heartfelt song. Love and Light. Mahalo, Mahalo, Mahalo!
