After a few mishaps in testing the earlier steel cart, I came up with this design for the wheels. Let me know what you think of the prototype! -----

Also with individually steerable assemblies like this, special track geometry is required. In curves you have to make the track gauge narrower since the effective horizontal distance between the wheel sets gets narrower. B+M, Intamin and all the other players that use this kind of articulation do this. On your tight curves you'll see the guide wheels pinch the track too tightly and bind up.

Dude. So happy I found you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiements. I wish more engineers and creators posted as many videos as you. Can't get any good info!

These work BEAUTIFULLY will. You have a lot to be proud of. I suggest banking the track a bit more and adding lateral load supporting beams near the turns. Since your coaster is so small scale, the stresses usually localize more dramatically to areas and with this new steel cart the speed is going to be greatly increased.
    Just a thought !

    Hey Will,
I really need your help!! I recently came back from a Theme Park and decided to look at Homemade Coasters and I've come across your videos which are insane. your videos have motivated me to make my own Rollercoaster in my Backyard.
I'd like to know what Size PVC Pipe you use, how you made the Rollercoaster pipe bend to make drops and how you made the Wooden cart for The Caution Zone!! Please Respond
    - Sincerely Jeremiah

Add some wheels for under the tracks so there will be a lower percentage of the cart falling of at hills at fast speed.

Ever thought about making it fully automated. Chain lift, Chain dog, Mechanical brake, Brake Fin, Control Console, etc? Cool DIY project. Wouldn't mind giving ideas if you ever want to make it automated. (Systems Engineer)

I work at Six Flags Magic Mountain and have gone through the ride mauals on how each component works. If you ever need a design idea I might be able to help. Also I have an idea on how to make a cheap and effective automated ride system using simple dmx control system.

Amazing. I'm not sold on the PVC with 2x4 supports though. I see this was 9 years ago though. Is the PVC track still there and did it work?

It’s long gone. UV destroyed it in a year. I now prefer building with steel!

In this video, the bottom wheels (called up-stop wheels) hadn't been installed yet. I was just testing the new wheel assembly design. The final cart and wheels definitely had up-stop wheels.

I love what your doing with your coaster I'm making one myself and I was wondering if I could buy this Steel Cart Prototype off you...the only thing Im concerned about is the width of the cart itself so I would need to know the PVC Pipe width and the wooden intervals width inbetween the PVC pipes, so I can adjust my track...The payment method would be through PayPal and I willing to pay 100ish USD...And I would need you too add wheels that go on the bottom of the tack for stability if you would like to do this deal please contact me though CZcams, Thank You!
