    I got into woodworking & turning recently.
    I’ve incredibly shakey hands, and finding the center on pieces has been quite a challenge.
    This is incredibly nifty!

    That thing would make life so much easier! Thanks for sharing that. It even looks simple enough that i could make my own!

      .... and the one that you make may well be better. Plus you'd have the fun of making it. Thanks for commenting.

    I've made those they are cool. A lil' tip. Take a sharpie,and mark down the edge of the blade each time,and it puts a mark on your wood that shows up better then just the cut line.

    Great idea, but at least in Australia, they are asking ridiculous prices for these and similar items. Very easy and cheap to make one for yourself out of a couple of bits of plywood and a utility knife blade.

      Re: "make one for yourself" I'd thought of that too after I'd bought it. Also, here in Canada we have the same problem with price gouging. We sometime seem to have to pay a lot more more for similar items sold just 100km south of my home in the USA. btw, thanks for watching :)

    There seems to be a couple of these 'centre finding' devices out there. One I saw was about $90 !!! Simplicity is the key. and yes they are available in Australia...yee haa!

    Thanks for the video and information. How would this work on a hard wood with a Janka of about 2500?

    Hey Ron, dumb question, but how does it work with rectangles stock..

      Hi Dan,
      Square stock is okay. Rectangles, not too good. Thanks for asking 😊

    Bought one of these, and I found it has a tendency to split the wood when you hit it hard enough to see the marks.

    • @roncalverley
      @roncalverley  Před 7 lety +2

      I wondered if that could happen. Not yet anyway.

      I use Bokote and Ipe dowel blanks, and it happens to me every now and then even though I watch the grain.

    I've been using a device called a "J" square for around 45 years. You do the marking with a pen or pencil.

    • @roncalverley
      @roncalverley  Před 6 lety +1

      I'm finding that I could have made up something out of scrap wood that is just as accurate. This center finder will only work if the end of the piece of wood is either perfectly square or perfectly round. Also for the knife edge to mark all the way to the centre, the end of the wood must be perfectly square to the sides. I've never heard of a "J" square, but it likely works along the same idea as what I could have had the fun of making up myself for nothing, lol. Thanks for commenting :)

      I've seen those I think. Does it kinda look like a dounut with a ducks bill shape extending out of it with two dowel pegs on the same side,and you just slide it around the edge of the piece marking cords? That's how I was shown anyway.

    Let's see. He uses a claw hammer to beat on wood, and actually beats on top of his table saw's steel top. Not smart.
