    Kurt was a genius. It's not always easy to abstract meaning from his lyrics, even when he wants you to. He often wrote lyrics off the top of his head and never changed them while some of his stuff is obviously super complex and deep. The problem is that it's not always easy to make out what he's saying which I think was usually on purpose. But his totally shameless drug use was also legendary, so who knows? Either way, he will be missed.

    • @ct5625
      @ct5625 Před 3 lety +3

      The notion that Kurt didn't know what he was writing or that it didn't have meaning is a myth. He said it in interviews because he was fed up of being interrogated about the meaning of everything when it should either be obvious or just encourage thought. No artist, whether they're painting on canvas or writing song lyrics, wants to be constantly asked "what does this mean?" and have completely nonsense explanations transposed on it. Honestly, someone would have to be intellectually damaged to not understand that this song and video is obviously about Courtney and him feeling trapped by the relationship. If I created art to this standard and I had people constantly demanding that I explain it all to them like they're toddlers I'd become fed up with it, too.

    • @christopherschreiber5805
      @christopherschreiber5805 Před 3 lety

      @@ct5625 Well I think you'd have to be intellectually damaged not to expect getting asked that question when most of your lyrics don't have any obvious meaning, but Kurt was also kind of famous for giving totally different answers when asked about it, so obviously there's not a whole lot of "meaning" there, at least not to him. That's why he got pissed when people called him out on his mumbling because clearly they were people who didn't listen to his music. He also probably made this album because he was having serious doubts about being a rock star at the time and tried to crash his career so he wouldn't get pigeonholed. People were expectig another Nevermind and he wanted to do something else. According to Courtney he wrote this song in like 20 minutes.

      @@christopherschreiber5805 I was 17 when In Utero came out, and even I knew that this song was about a bad relationship with a toxic female, most of Kurt's lyrics are actually very clear.

      @christopherschreiber5805 Před 3 lety +1

      @@chopps75 Are you sure? Kurt was actually a huge Beatles fan, as demonstrated by the fact that he sang mostly in drug-induced metaphor (see ON A PLAIN: "What the hell am I trying to say?"). For me, "she" is a little on-the-nose for a Nirvana song written in minor. He could just as easily be talking about heroin or even his own inner conflict in bringing a child into that world. I understand why people made it about Courtney after his death but it's probably a lot deeper than that. Maybe not as well refined as a lot of stuff off Nevermind or even Bleach, but again, he wrote it in 20 minutes. Also the drugs were catching up.

      "Forever in debt to your priceless in advice" was taken from a letter he wrote to Courtney while they were dating, thanking her for some advice she'd given him- about what, I do not know, but he wrote to her "I am forever in debt for your priceless advice and opinions." It sounds sarcastic in the song, but at the time it was sincere.

      She also tried to steal the riff for Hole, something people believe she did more than once considering nothing the band created on their own after his death was worth a damn. Other musicians she had relationships with before and after Kurt have said the same thing, she just wanted to leech off them because she couldn't create anything of her own. She couldn't even play guitar. He was composing this song in a closet when she interrupted him and asked if she could have the riff and he said "fuck you" and slammed the door.

Tar-pit trap?)..so throughout the song he’s referring to heroin as being female..who knows that’s part of why it’s a great song..thank you hunny! Keep up the good work god bless🙏🏼

    This is genuinely one of the most important Nirvana videos, because it was almost entirely conceived by Kurt. The director allegedly had to force him to include the sections with the band members because the plan Kurt had was for the entire thing to tell a story without the band being seen. This song was also allegedly written at the time Courtney Love, his wife, told him she was pregnant with their daughter. She's since attempted to re-imagine what this song was about, claiming it's about a literal "heart shaped box" he gave her, but all the lyrics and the imagery is clearly about her trapping him into a relationship and using their child as an means to control him. "Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back" could only possibly have one meaning. When you read about their relationship, and you discover the kind of person Courtney is and was, this video and song makes a lot more sense.

    I sat one day a long time ago and thought about these lyrics with a blank mind... and convinced myself that it's not about illness at all. Kurt was writing about his relationship to Courtney, the darkness being her addiction and mental issues, heart-shaped box meaning both their love and their daughter. The song was written not long after a Vanity Fair article misquoted Courtney in such a way that the court sent Frances (daughter) to live with her sister, the implication having been made that she used heroin during the pregnancy.
    It's cryptic.

    Kurt was a genius lyricist. He and Courtney Love had a very interesting relationship. My thoughts on this song are that it is in large part about their relationship and the volatility of it (which is WELL known). Examples are the lines "I wish I could eat your Cancer when you turn black", and "She eyes me like a Pisces when I'm weak".... Courtney Love is a Cancer (astrological sign) and Kurt was a Pisces. And, "throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back".... Courtney got pregnant (unexpectedly, although some say, it was on purpose) with their daughter Francis... I think the umbilical noose line is a nod to that. That being said, Kurt never explained any of his lyrics and every line in this song could be interpreted in many different ways.... Just my thoughts on the inspiration for this one... No matter what, Nirvana was an amazing group and impacted the world in a significant way. Great reaction Jayy!!! :)

    There is always a difficulty associated with ascribing meaning to a song. Some are obvious like "I'm to sexy" where the singer puts himself into the role of a vacuous model obsessed with appearance. But many others, if not most songs, are proverbial blue curtains.
    We as outsiders can apply meaning to the blue curtain which must be distorted by our own lens. There are some who feel this is just as valid an interpretation as the authorial intent, but I disagree because I feel we learn little when we hold up a mirror to our own ideas. But then the author doesn't always know their own intent or wish to keep it secret which is why asking them can give different responses over the years (not to mention that their own ideas can change once they are living with their creation that has been presented to the world). Then we have the issue of the music video director having their own interpretation as to the meaning, or just wanting to do something unrelated to the song.
    Or maybe it's all artistic wankery and we should all stop allowing these people, these artists, who have only a loose connection to reality themselves to dictate our thoughts. 😉

    from what Kurt and Krist and Dave have said in interviews. He was pretty much just trying to be edgy. There's no hidden meaning to anything. He just wanted to be dark and provocative. so many people fall into the trap of thinking "what is Kurt trying to say here?" nothing "garble" the only song I can think of that this doesn't apply to is Polly because it's about a real hostage situation. Some songs might have a theme like In Bloom being about fans who listen to Nirvana but don't respect women and or are racist and homophobic. It's the mystery of Kurt Cobain, his lyrics are simultaneously meaningless and meaningful. Don't over think Kurts lyrics or videos hes just trying to f with your mind.

    Kurt loved metaphors and twisting up his lyrics to make you think and ponder just what the words mean. Some think 'Heart-shaped Box' is about his toxic relationship with Courtney Love, his wife, now widow. I think it's about loving someone who is dying, and perhaps it was Kurt's view of how he thought his wife must've felt looking at him because he was very sick from his drug abuse that was his way of self-medicating from his stomach illness, which many now believe was Crohn's Disease (something that was not known of back then in the early 90's) and his scoliosis. He had tremendous back problems because his spine was curved like an S. I'm sure Kurt thought there was a possibility his stomach illness would kill him and wanted to end his life before it did. We'll never know the truth about all of that, sadly.
    Anyway, 'In Utero,' which this song is from, is my favorite Nirvana album. It was their last, and in my humble opinion, their magnum opus (masterpiece).
