    • @TH_WLD_RVR
      @TH_WLD_RVR Před 4 lety +22

      It actually has nothing to do with actual rape. The song is about the music industry trying to control a band or artist, and taking their creative freedom away to “sell out”. Kurt didn’t care about being famous or main stream, he just wanted to write and play the music that came from inside of him.

  • @jamespratt8221
    @jamespratt8221 Před 5 lety +196

    "She eyes me like a pisces when I am weak" Kurt was a pisces, Courtney Love is a cancer. Pisces is a fish, which have no eyelids and thus don't blink. So in addition to the traits of a pisces person you mentioned (compassionate, sensitive, etc), when taken more literally he feels like she's watching him super intently when she sees signs of weakness... the first line sets up the entire love/hate trust/doubt theme of the song.
    Keep up the good work guys!

    Kurt was obsessed with anatomy and poetic obscurity and didn't like to reveal himself openly in lyrics...so he wrote a lot of obscurred dark mysterious lyrics that meant something to him but he wanted it vague enough it could mean something else to another listener........he didn't put a lot of stock in his lyrics...they were often taken from half a dozen poems and worked together and changed to rhyme or sound better....the music was first...lyrics were an after thought, not that they were not meaningful but they became a mystery within a mystery...they mean what you take them to mean

    Heart-Shaped Box was basically a Love-Hate letter from Kurt to Courtney Love. She definitely has a darkness inside her that he alludes to in the song. Also the umbilical cord reference is regarding his daughter. I personally think having a kid was her attempt at keeping Kurt with Courtney. He may have known she was a bad influence but Francis Bean (his kid) kept him in the relationship.

      I actually recommended even earlier Badmotorfinger Soundgarden in another post, but I guess Superunknown is more contemporary with In Utero. Soundgarden had their own style altogether and I think were only classified as grunge because they were from Seattle during that time. The Red Hot Chili Peppers aren't thought of as a "grunge" band during that era - they definitely also have their own sound, but mainly it's because they were from LA...

    "Tar-pitt trap" could refer to a black tar heroin co-dependent relationship between Kurt and Courtney.
    Overall, with hard to interperate personal symbolism, the song seems to be expressing a toxic relationship between the lead-singer and Courtney Love.
    Edit- plus the tons of baby references (e.g umbilical noose) in both video and lyrics seems to directly link to the impact of courtney and kurt's newborn child on their relationship and his emotional state. Also, the lyrics "meat-eating orchards" sung while kurt walks through a poppy field is another heroin reference.
    Although so personal, it seems to be one of his most easily translated songs..

      I also think the "eyes me like a Pisces" is Kurt's somewhat clever way of saying that she's giving him a fish eye, which is basically glaring at him for being weak. The "umbilical noose" thing had more to do with Kurt's feminist perspective/obsession with women (especially Courtney Love) and is evocative of a theory that part of what drives men and their behavior with women is almost an attempt to return to the womb or be part of a woman's body again as they were In Utero, so to speak.

    (via Genius - Ruben [user] - 3 Years ago:)
    "No it´s not about her vagina!!! The world doesn’t rotate around her vagina as she thinks.
    The lyrics and the video are about they´re relation though, an unstable romance between the two and the role they’re daughter came to play in his life.
    Pisces and Cancer are Cobain’s and Love’s respective astrological signs and Kurts´s perception of one character dominating over another:
    “She eyes me like a Pisces when I am weak”
    An heart-shaped box was one of the first gifts Courtney Love (Mitchell) gave him:
    “I’ve been locked inside your heart-shaped box for weeks”
    Remember this was written when things were definitely already going sour:
    “I’ve been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
    I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn black”
    A “tar pit trap” isn’t the most flattering way of describing someone to say the least, the other verse obviously reflects a sentiment of impotence to deal with her dark side.
    As for the symbolism in the video note that the poppies represent heroin and the girl, his daughter, throwing them away represents the change that she brought to his live, getting rid of the habit, for her. This can also be perceived in the almost dying man (Cobain) lying in the hospital bed and being kept alive with an IV of a baby (his daughter), meaning she was the thing that was keeping him alive.
    The first title to this song was “Heart Shaped Coffin” and had the verse “I’ve been buried inside your heart-shaped box for weeks”
    Thinking that this is a love song of appreciation for her is at least being in denial…
    This is one of the most depressing music/video ever and reflects his relation."

    The song is about his wife, Courtney Love, yes she is a Cancer and that's a play on words. Cobain was the Pisces. I think that the attributes of Cancer are meant to be nurturing, mothering but also domineering. The 'Heart Shaped Box' is a crude reference to her vagina.

    • @loveforjesus6464
      @loveforjesus6464 Před 5 lety +9

      I believe there are specific lines that suggest he is comparing Courtney to his mother. They have similar personality traits and it's no secret that Kurt resented his mother's behavior during his adolescence. Then as an adult, he was drawn to women with personality traits similar to his mother. Kurt used music as a cathartic release of pent up emotions and often wrote about very personal experiences. I think in this song, Kurt is declaring his realization of his marriage falling apart (or that he was being manipulated the whole time).

    Nice and thoughtful lyrical interpretation. Kurt was indeed a Pisces and Courtney is a Cancer sign, so good pickup there. I love these videos and experiencing the music I love through a fresh perspective. I often learn new things about songs I have loved for years. Keep it up. If I may make a recommendation, give Pixies a try. Perhaps the song “Hey.”
