This was back when leaders were more concerned with maintaining our freedom rather than "keeping us safe". What a shift in priorities.

Well... the world is a lot more free now. The soviet union has fallen. Fighting communism is no longer a fight for the imminent survival of the democratic world and our individual liberties. China is still a communist state, yes. But it is not the soviet union. It does not seek to be the new soviet union. The cold war is over.

Oskar Förberg We're far less free in America now as compared to then. Also, I wouldn't trust Putin. He's up to some very sneaky stuff. Did you know he has control over North American uranium? He's made life miserable for his fellow Russians. Since his "adventures" started in Ukraine, there has been a huge loss of foreign investment in Russia.

+Anon54387 I agree, but our politicians can't fix the problems, yet want to increase the variables to the problem with no answer to the equation. If someone says fix the problem your racist. I'm a racist because I want answers to our (all people) problems.

    smezec,
I surely hope you are not comparing the United States to the Soviet Union??? The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan for more power and control...the U.S. went there in retaliation for its leadership and part in the 911 terroristic attacks. If your comment is a smack against Reagan, comparing the two events and reasons as similar are absurd.
