- Norfolk has had a 'Blue Badge Investigator' for the last year, to try and crack down on people who use the disabled parking passes for the wrong reasons.
He is on the look out for fakes, ones that are out of date, and people who borrow them when the badge holder isn't actually part of the journey.

I had taken my wife to the doctors. All disabled spaces occupied, so I dropped her off at the door. Then found a spot to park and sat in the car. Couple came out on crutches, laughing their heads off. Woman takes the crutches off and hands them to her husband who is also now walking without crutches. He opens the car, goes to the boot and throws the crutches in. Gets in and drives away. I pulled in to the place he had just vacated. He stopped his car, got out and came running up to me. Shouts 'That's a disabled bay' 'I know' 'You're not disabled' 'Correct, but my wife is and she is in the doctors. I am waiting for her.' The look on his face was amazing! However, there is a moral to this. I had taken his number, reported him to the council. Next thing they were in court for falsely claiming benefits, and misuse of a blue badge. If he had just driven off I wouldn't have bothered. When I am in the car on my own or if wife is with me, but does not need to go shopping etc. I do not on principle park in disable parking bays etc.
you go !!!!!! thank you so very much on behalf of every genuine disabled person . i wish my council had the same attitude as you . until i fought it they did not even check badges at all . you have my full respect .
My dad died. I have his same name. When I called to cancel his disabled badge the person in the office was incredulous that I was handing it back.

Blue Badge abuse in Ipswich is rife, and if you complain to Ipswich Borough Council they say we don't have parking enforcement working at this time, its only 4.10pm !!
My wife has a blue badge but when you try and park in Ipswich Town Centre there are numerous cars parked in disabled spaces meaning we cannot find anywhere to park. On a recent meeting we had with Citizens Advice, we had to defer because all the spaces nearby were busy, but no more than 50% had blue badges displayed. I phoned the Council and they just replied we cannot do anything at the moment, very un-interested.
I once saw a blue badge 0:57 investigator bawl out a man who parked in a disabled space and walked away, he didn't respond, he just hitched up his trousers and revealed his two artificial legs.

I don't see why they have to be updated after three years. I've been disabled for ten years and I've given up fighting for a replacement. My circumstances haven't changed. Hence I'm very restricted where I can go now, worse than with the blue badge. The councils shouldn't make it impossible for genuine people.
i understand your concerns i also have a permanent disability that gets worse with age . i am happy to put up with it in order that they can try and clamp down on the huge amount if criminal cases involving badges and also the huge amout of family using grannies badge for sheer convience . i wish you well friend .
They need renewal just in case someone has died. Otherwise some people would keep using the dead persons badge. Its easy to renew by post. I have had a blue badge for 43 years so far. It helps me a lot.
At last, this is a genuine service unlike the litter Stasi. Please come to Cornwall.
What kind of husband lets his disabled wife go into the supermarket while he stays in the car? At least make your excuses plausible.

The idea of the Blue Badge is excellent, but the way it's been implemented in the UK is nothing short of farcical.
We live outside the country, and last time we visited (about ten years ago) Krzyszczynska, a long-term crutches and wheelchair user, took the trouble to obtain beforehand an international disability parking permit. On checking up after arrival, we found that there's no nationally-administered scheme for disability permits in Britain, and our international permit cut no ice at all.
Wherever you go, whichever LA you're in, you're expected to apply at their HQ for one of the local BBs AND HAND IN YOUR INTERNATIONAL ONE!! Then at the end of your stay, hand in the local badge and get your own one back, in time to rinse and repeat in the next LA territory.
We simply said "sod this" and trusted to luck and our international permit (and just let anyone try to have confiscated that). Worked out OK. Although the actual reason it worked out in Norwich, when we tried to visit, was that every bloody parking building in the city was fully occupied, disabled parks AND ordinary.
I parked in a disabled bay and hopped out to the back of the car. And was immediately shouted at by some tit in a high viz vest because I was obviously not disabled. Which I am not. I let him shout at me for a bit without replying, and then opened the boot and got the collapsible wheelchair out for my MIL who was in the front seat.
I have never seen anyone go so red.
What annoys me - my wife has a blue badge, is the number of non-badge cars parked in reserved spaces in places like Tesco's. If you raise the issue the response is we can't stop them.

There’s a couple from Soham dress to the nines park with their blue jag matching their blue badge on double yellows and then walk off as fast as the rest of us to the Saturday street auction. Absolutely nothing wrong with their mobility. Mentioned it to the local traffic warden who said it wasn’t their job to judge whether they should have a badge, just to check whether it’s correctly time set and valid for that car.
Nobody in the right department is bothered enough to do their job, just get to 5pm! Everyone from the purps to the officials are taking the p$ss
The worst place i have seen is Greggs in mansfield Woodhouse, there are many spaces and only 2 disabled spaces but anybody uses them from delivery pick ups to young lads ,nobody says a word
I used to live in Wales and my blue badge was on auto renewal. I moved to Sussex and when I applied to renew I was told by a woman, with no medical training, in the council office I am not disabled enough
Forth Valley Health Board's Pride & Joy Larbert Hospital , I'm Disabled i attend once every month Out Patient ENT Disabled Bays occupied by vehicles Not Showing Blue Badge , my son Circled 5 Times before getting a spot. Went to Front Desk to Complain about it , told Nothing can be done about it.

Could be computerized, blue badge plates on computer, traffic warden hand held reads plate and gets positive or negative response.
The person is issued the badge, not the car.
I am not again blue badge holders as long as they are used properly. But my experience is they are not . I personally know people who do abuse them . Also the places they park without a care For any one else you only have to look down local high streets there cars abandoned all over the place

No you carnt stop a person parking in a disabled bag In a supermarket . They can park in the bag without a badge . It’s the equality act and they carnt discriminate against a person with a disability . Simple but true .
I keep saying it put picture of the disabled person on the badge, problem solved.
No, problem created, because it marks the person concerned as an easy target for mugging. The badge owner's photo is actually on the reverse of the badge so that a legitimate investigator can verify them, but it is made very clear that the photo must be on the underside as displayed.
A picture is on the Blue Badge - the reverse side. I saw someone a few years ago questioned about the blue badge in their car. Turned out it was his deceased mother's!
They should definitely make them harder to forge but they should also make non disabled parking free or cheaper!!! Why should we pay for parking

Though it definitely should be cheaper or public transport should be, outside of London we rely on cars and already pay taxes on them and public transport is high price too!
