I remember one book where they called this out. Their evil boss had just called them in to seize one guy, and they all refused and started listing off all the things that happen when a group of flunkies are called in and told to seize that man. She's not a maia.
For those wondering: in Tolkien literary cannon, Shelob is the last child of Ungoliant, the first spider, who drank the sap from the tree of light, and created Unlight. Shelob is much older than Sauron, and has never been anything other than a giant spider. Nothing to do with Sauron, except a vague alliance with Melkor/Morgoth, the dark God in Tolkien continuity.
Edit: okay, older than the corruption of Mairon to become Sauron. Not older than the entity, as he is a Maiar, but older than that entity’s corruption into becoming essentially a new being in Sauron.
Edit 2, because Silmarillion. Not older than Sauron, as he is part of the lesser choir, the Maiar present at creation.
Will leave incorrect info up to give context to replies. TOLKEIN FORGIVE ME!!!!!
She isn’t older than Sauron. Sauron existed before the world was created. She was around before Sauron became the Dark Lord though.
@@sailor-trash1638 are you sure about that? I think you got sauron's master confused with him. I genuinely dont know and curious.
@@sailor-trash1638 Oh yeah, he is way older than Shelob, and correct me if I am wrong but wasn't Sauron part of the first beings?
@@chancejewson1516 absolutely sure. The Maiar existed before the Trees of Valinor, that includes Sauron. In fact the Maiar were around even during the time of the two lamps (which preceded the Trees of Valinor, who were created from the remains of the lamps).
All in all, Sauron and the other Maiar are 10s of thousands of years older than Shelob.
Also in that scene it is implied that Sauron and Shelob might have had a sexual relationship.
While Maiar´s most certainly could marry and reproduce (see Thingol´s marriage to the Maiar Melian), i very much doubt Sauron was ever in the mood to marry anyone much less actually having carnal relationships.
It doesn´t seem to be in his nature, Sauron desires always seems to be that he wanted to rule all living creatures of middle earth.
Rule them like a king rules over his subjects and nothing else.
So yeah i VERY much doubt Sauron would have had a sexual relationship with anyone spider or not.

She always was a monster spider. When i played the games i didn't interpretate like Sauron had turned her into Spider. More like he, being a master of disguises, a shapeshifterby himself, had given her that woman form. And she was think they were equals, while he was using her like his pawn.
Love this game!
I don’t know why this game decided they needed to turn Shelob the spider into a hot chick, she was always a spider.

I like this interpretation of Shelob, honestly.
I thought he had just betrayed her and she reverted back to her true form in her rage. Honestly, I never got from the cinematics that he had turned her into a spider...
She has only ever had one form anyway, the game made some silly changes to the lore.
@@4shm3x Very true, but my message was regarding the notion that in the game Sauron inflicted curse-of-spider upon Shelob; and to that, I’d say it isn’t clear to me. I always thought, at that moment, she dropped/lost the bit of unremarkable magic she used to appear human
Yeah that would make more sense, if she betrayed her and switched sides he wouldn't have a reason to make her stronger by turning her into a spider monster
@@cavok84 No fellah she is the daughter of Ungoliant z who was one of Melkor's commanders. (Melkor was Sauron's lord before he was sent to the abyss)
@@4shm3x yes I know that. I’d bet most people viewing these comments know that. I’m talking about from the perspective of THIS game’s cinematics. If that doesn’t clear it up, I don’t know what will.
Furthermore, my last comment was arguing AGAINST the idea that Sauron turned her into a spider.
Sauron really a badass in his elf Form.
When Tolkien said Sauron saw Shelob as his pet cat, I don't think this is what he had in mind
Well that was cool. That's an interesting portrayal of how Shelob came to be. If anyone is wondering Shelob is actually one of the many daughters of Ungoliant, a spirit from the void that manifested the form of a giant spider. This is not how Shelob came to be though. She is part of Ungoliant and may be one of the nameless things; an ancient evil older than Middle Earth itself.
Though the story wasn't cannon i still enjoyed this game very much, both of them actually. I don't have a problem with a game going off script it's been done before and has been praised for it like Star wars the force unleashed
Honestly, the game, although not being canon, has piqued my interest in Tolkien’s body of work.
Aside from reading The Hobbit halfway through for class, I’ve never looked into or have seen LOTR, etc.
The force unleashed was canon until Disney bought Lucas film. It was unfortunately just not Canon very long. There are some theories that the main character Galen Marek/Starkiller influenced Cal Kestis to an extent. And perhaps the hallway scene with Darth Maul in the clone wars tv show.
The force unleashed is dumb too.

"Damn it...just when I thought Elf Sauron was a simp"
He didn’t turn her into a spider she just has a spider form, he abandoned her to the kings March to corrupt the king convincing him that she was the sole enemy thus betraying her. She chose spider out of hatred
For those of you wondering, while this isnt Canon, it still ties in to canon rather well if you do more than watch a cutscene. Dauron didn't turn Shelob into a spider; she always was one and this is mentioned in the texts of each shelob memory web in the codex.
She simply disliked that form, and despite the power it held, the longer she was in that true form, the more her hatred of sauron and/or light robbed her of reason... making her more like ungoliant with each moment. Sauron's betrayal sent her over the edge, using it more and more until Shelob became what she was in the events of The Return of the King.
You are appreciated. This was some Tolkien knowledge I never knew about... just thought Shelob was a giant spider
When you said 'Disliked that form' is it her human form or her spider form?

@@codybaggett5329 i remember her now, that must have been what I was thinking of.
She was born as a spider monster to a spider monster, though.
I think some people are overreacting a bit. They’re definitely twisting Tolkien’s lore but the writers of the games were aware of his lore. The reason they had Shelob transform back and forth in the form of a woman and a spider is because the Silmarillion and I believe even the Lotr books refer to Ungoliant and Shelob as beings in the form of spiders rather than actual spiders. They’re ancient spirits, primordial entities so they’re toying with the idea of them being able to change form. I don’t think they’re necessarily saying the elven form is his true form. His form as an elf Annatar the lord of gifts by lore lore is a form he uses to gain trust in others so they just made it his default form for manipulation.
You are correct that Ungoliant was or is a primordial entity so I would think that she could choose whatever form suited her. Shelob however, would be more of a “demigod” who may or may not have had any supernatural abilities. We know that she had a very long life span and was massive in size but that is all we know for sure of her abilities. Also, Ungoliant is said to have matted with the great spiders of Nan Dungortheb. So I doubt she would have the ability to shift between forms. Interesting concept though.
@@TS-cn9jp Yeah I’m not inherently agreeing that she does change form just that there’s enough room in implications from lore that they may, I’m not saying the game’s writing isn’t bad, just that the concept of Ungoliant or Shelob changing form isn’t inherently bad or invalid.
@@edgardtheknowledgekeeper3119 Ungoliant less so as she was something that came from outside Arda I'm the form of a giant spider. Shelob however, far too many liberties were taken. Essentially fun fan fiction.
Shelob being betrayed by a guy who literally have the nickname great deceiver is the same as death by cancer via giant crab.
Oh and your argument about Sauron’s true form not being an elf is also correct. He was a shape shifter like all Maia and Vala but lost the ability. I may be wrong but I think he lost his ability to shape shift after Numenore was destroyed? Any way I believe the books talk about him assuming the forms of a werewolf, vampire, and human at some point in addition to becoming an elf to trick Celebrimbor.
This is some quality horror material right there.
Y'all can say what you wanna say about the Shadow games but they were fun as hell and one of the best game releases of it's time. The nemesis system is still one of the most revolutionary things to come out of modern gameplay.
Finally someone who appreciates a good game
Sauron is not a simp 😂
😂😂😂😂👍 agreed, bro, agreed lol xD
So, something not obvious at first glance: they didn't make up this story just because they wanted, Tolkien State never sold the rights to the Silmarillion, so they can't actually pull any character's backstory from there, they have to make up new ones, and they also have to avoid making their canon too similar to the Silmarillion canon, or they could be shut down for copyright infringement.

"Shelob paralyzes her prey, then...she does her way with them!"
I love how she turns into a spider monster in a cut between shots.
Elf Sauron is NOT an elf. He's a Maiar, a spirit of less degree, The People of the Valar. He's name was Mairon.
Shelob was NOT a human form. She was born a spider, descended from Ungoliant, the mother of all spiders that she mate with a foul creature that Melkor wrought.
And finally Sauron and Shelob were never together ruling Mordor. Sauron would have got rid of her but he let her stay in her lair where is the secret entrance of Mordor so if anyone tried to trespass they would be devour by Shelob.
Another thing to note, is that Sauron would send her Orcs to eat to keep her sated. He considered her a useful pet. Frodo and Sam find remnants of armor strewn around Shelob's lair and the Orcs that find Frodo after he is stung are fully aware of her presence and check up on her from time to time.

So I think the best thing about both games was the nemesis system. That being said I think the story is better in the first one, even though both games stories are weak. I also think the artifacts to collect in the first are better too since they tell you the lore about different things. Like the blue wizards the relationship between orcs and spiders and so forth. Okay for those complaining SHELOB HAD SOME OF HER MOTHERS POWERS!!!!!!!!
Just because her having humanform wasnt relevant to LOTR doesnt mean she didnt have one.

@@thekrazyhatter5063 it's a game & people can take as it whatever they want. I'm just saying that canonically Shelob DOES have some of her mothers powers & therefore this COULD be canon
Apparently Ungoliant was a corrupted Maia; but she wanted no allegiance with Morgoth. What got her to cooperate with him was the promise to fulfil her insatiable hunger, and that leads the death of the Two Trees; but that just increased her hunger even more, leading her to grow bigger and bigger, belching out black vapours. But then she wanted more; so she wanted to feed on the Silmarils. But it was stopped by Balrogs who heard Morgoth’s shrieking. She fled, and dwelled in Nan Dungortheb, where she birthed her offspring, and amongst them was Shelob. None don’t know about the fate of Ungoliant; but some say that her hunger was so great that she devoured herself; and some believed her offspring feasted on her.
Yep, that’s Ungoliant in a nutshell although her status as a Maia is debated.
I believe that ungoliant was a darkness that came from the song of the ainur in morgoths own twisted singing, therefore I think she is a being made from the darkness of the song of the ainur, I also think ungoliant and the nameless things are the same species.

Sauron: "OH FFS don't just walk into it like that!"
Shelob was already a "monster" somewhat from the start, being the spawn of Ungolianth, a primordial shadow spirit, this already shaped as a gargantuan spider ages before making spawns, during the first epoch.
That said, they are both shadow spirits who, after being corrupted, by their own obsessions or by others, ended up losing control of themselves and their shape-shifting abilities.
As all the ancient spirit (the spirits then after called Balrogs, before being corrupted by Morgoth, himself too, are no exception), they had a humanoid shape or/and a control on their physical form, depending by their greatness, as long as they got some real control on themselves and their powers, once losing that control they are just monsters.

She’s always been a spider it’s speculated that she can become a human form but doesn’t want to. She’s a more primal form of Ungoliant.
Shelob is the daughter of Angoliant (I prolly spelled that wrong) but Angoliant was a ginormous spider monster that spawned a bunch of little shelobs, all but her are dead now, she hates Sauron simply for ghosting her
Im pretty sure shelob was already a spider god monster before she met sauron
I don't think Shelob ever met Sauron in the books. She was simply his pet that lived in the mountain caves, guarding the secret entrance to Mordor.
Late reply. In-game entries about Shelob says she was always a spider but preferred to look human. So this scene was showing that he betrayed her not that he turned her. She just slightly regressed because of her anger and took it out on the soldiers.
Note on her shapeshifting:
They took creative liberties with her being able to shapeshift because 1) Sauron could do it, 2) Ungoliant was a spirit or whatever and took the form of a spider so it's possible Ungoliant could shapeshift. (As far I remember Ungoliant's creation and powers are vague enough that you _could_ conclude that it's possible she could shapeshift so why couldn't here most powerful offspring shapeshift also.)

The algorithm brought me to this video but I'm confused. I though Shelob had always been a spider, not someone cursed to be a spider.
In the books and movie lore, she is described as been in a spider-like form. That can interpreted in a couple of ways. For the game though, it seems they went with the interpretation that spider-like form ment that she could shspeshift. For the game, it looks like Sauron had betrayed her and in so doing pissed her off to the point of reverting to spider-like form.
Yes, she was always a spider, specifically a descendant of Ungoliant, a hideous spider-like monster that even Morgoth feared.
Tolkien be literally Adelle like rolling in the deep, forget ROP lol, this was torches and pitchforks material.
Sauron didn't turn her into a spider.... She was just in human form here.
No matter if Sauron turned her into an actual spider or not he is truly an evil bastard and that only makes it better that Golem is the reason he is destroyed giving Golem the ultimate victory over that which corrupted him from an innocent river person even if it meant his death, we can only b so lucky to go out destroying that which destroyed us during our lives
One thing that has always bothered me with how sauron has been portrayed in media is that his aims and end goal seem very vague. Like, we know he seeks to dominate all life, but what is driving him? We never are shown his point of view.
He was initially a servant of Aulë named Mairon. However, as is the theme of servants of Aulë and indeed Aulë himself, he was impatient to create and overeager to achieve his goals. One of Mairon’s original desires was to see the world in order. The mortal races weren’t very good at doing this on their own and he believed he could do it better. This is when Melkor beguiled him and drew him to his side, promising the authority to rule over these races. If they could not find peace and order by themselves then they would find it under his control. However over time the influence of Melkor corrupted this into a hatred of all those who were not under his control
@@ethanquirk28 would have been nice to see a small scene of him being corrupted by melkor like A chance meeting in the wilds of the world or something like that. It would have defined his viewpoint and given the audience more context.
