How to cut lilacs (and make them into a centerpiece)!

  • Today we are sharing some tips on getting your lilacs to last longer in a vase! Lilacs have a reputation for having a shorter vase life because the woody stems have a hard time uptaking water, which is the best way to keep your flowers looking freshest longest!
We will also show you how we make a beautiful and simple centerpiece out of this classic, old-fashioned and underappreciated flower!
Here are my tips in a nutshell:
    -cut early in the morning
-cut before flowers have fully opened
    -remove most foliage
    -strip lower part of bark
-make a cut up the center of the stem
-place in hot water in a cool, dark spot for about 8 hours
Then, arrange! Trust me, hydration is the name of the game with lilacs, so everything we can do to get that to happen is going to help those lilacs out!
Do you love using lilacs as cut flowers, or are they not worth the hassle to you?

I used to be a florist and I used a sharp pocketknife. Worked like a charm. Edit: it was so sharp it would go through woody stems that size.

Beautiful and yes! Lilacs and peonies, plus lilies of the valley for their amazing fragrance. All three have been my favorites since I was a little girl.

Thanks so much for this video. I find lilacs gorgeous - especially in the spring when there aren’t so many flowers in bloom.

My 30+ year old lilac tree has lilacs coming on almost every branch this year. I'm in zone 6B in Nova Scotia and our lilacs are just in the early bud stage but at least they are showing. So proud of this tree as it was blown down and partially uprooted last fall in tropical force storm winds and suffered a large main root complete break. It was stood back up and stabilized. Still quite movable but is producing more lilacs after that mishap than any other year. They surely are resilient ❤

Great video. I, too, love lilacs but rarely bring them inside because they haven’t lasted long. I’m definitely going to try your strategies this year, actually in a day or so. Thanks!

Do you strip hydrangea stems like that too? I've only just cut up the last 2-3inches never striped them. Makes sense.

Where did you get this chicken wire? Mine is tiny girth aluminum and cuts my hands and isn't nearly as sturdy as this thicker one appears to be!

There are a lot of really talented (and trained) floral designers around, you just have to know where to look. Definitely not a lost art. There aren’t a lot on CZcams, so if that’s where you are looking it might seem that it’s a lost art. Danielle at “Northlawn Flower Farm” does beautiful arrangements and is a master gardener as well.

And Laura from Garden Answer, but she doesn’t do them often.

    • @NicolesGardenNS
      @NicolesGardenNS Před rokem

@@cynthiafisher9907 she is definitely not trained. Pretty sure, but not professional. I don’t watch her much because you have to double check all her advice, she does get a lot of things wrong.

@@NicolesGardenNS Are you talking about Laura? She is self taught, that’s true, but often people who are self taught and have a lot of experience know more than those who have an education. I don’t find she gets a lot of things wrong, but I do live in the same area. Maybe her advice works better for our climate and not so well for yours.

I mean that most people don’t often take the time to do floral arranging for their own home. If you do that’s great!
