Here's how you make a Fantastic Beasts series work:
Movie 1: Child and young Newt discovering his fascination with magical beasts, perhaps gets flak about it from his peers. Some stuff from his time at Hogwarts. Maybe he saves someone from a beast by using his *knowledge.* A more character-focused piece to really help us understand why Newt cares so deeply about this.
Movie 2: Young adult Newt, fresh-faced, emerges into a wizarding world that seems cold and uncaring towards the beasts Newt holds in such high regard. Now starts his real quest, to educate people about, and preserve, these wonderful creatures. This would be a lighthearted affair for the most part, lots of antics of Newt interacting with various creatures.
Movie 3: Adult Newt faces off against groups of poachers, both muggles and wizards. He realizes he has a duty to teach the world about these creatures and settles on writing his new encyclopedia. A slower movie with some pre-environmental messages in there.
And you know what none of those stories require at all? Any of the established HP characters. No Dumbledore, no Grindlewald, nothing. Keep the overarching wizarding world and its politics to background noise.

I feel these movies didn't need an overarching good-vs-evil plot. It could have easily been about Newt and his friends (that maybe can't read minds?), exploring the wizarding world outside of Hogwarts and all the magic animals that inhabit it. They could have the group explore rare animals, cool places and the peoples and cultures of the wizarding world. It would have been probably very interesting, what magical south american, african or asian magical beasts are like. It could have also been interesting how different cultures use magic and how they interact with one another. There could have also been poachers and other kinds of evil, yet kind of unimportant on a grand scale, villains to make the plot more lively. HP, to me at least, thrives mostly from viewers/readers imagining the different world and exploring it through the eyes of a protagonist as a means of escaping real life. It would have been lot better and less complicated to just let Newt and his friends explore the wizarding world through their individual pov's and maybe let the Grindelwald plot run more or less in background through newspapers and occasional mention from other characters.
I guess what I'm saying is that, they needn't have made a movie trilogy called "Fantastic Beasts" when it's about Grindelwald and Grindelwald only, instead of Fantastic Beasts.

The thing is, Fantastic Beasts was supposed to be centered mainly around Newt and his creatures. To introduce us to magical creatures that he didn’t get to see in Harry Potter. The lore between Dumbledore and Grindelwald might’ve made an amazing franchise if it was a story explored and told separate from Newt and his storyline. What made the first movie good was how it lived up the the name, it showed Newt and all his wonderful creatures. But they added in this whole plot that, on the surface, had absolutely nothing to do with Newt and his creatures, but they crammed the two storylines together. Fantastic beasts should’ve just been centered around Newt and Jacob and them exploring magical creatures. I’d have loved to see something like that for the second and third movie.

Magic beasts had a crucial role in conflict between mages, muggles and Grindelwald's followers. For they were scapegoats since their inability to control instincts made them a great tool to cause havock. It it would seem only do harm but they are crucial for maintaining magic. You could see that eagle like bird from 1rst part healing trauma in muggles by making them forget bad memories connected with magic.

Seriously, the easiest thing in the world for a good follow-up to Fantastic Beasts would just to have it be the case that after the events of the first movie, Grindelwald and his Dark Wizards start capturing Magical Beasts that the Wizarding World neglects to preserve/protect and start using them as living weapons. And the reason Newt becomes involved is that while Aurors are able to fight back against Dark Wizards fairly well, they need a Magizoologist to tag along to pacify the Beasts that are being conditioned into living weapons. Even have it be the case that the film opens with an Auror raid against a Dark Wizard Beast menagerie, they end up having to kill the ones that’ve gone feral, and when Dumbledore learns that the deaths could have easily been avoided, he personally recommends that the Ministry seek out Newt to prevent another senseless tragedy. There. It’s that simple. You can still have all the other characters involved, but it gives a more solid reason for why Newt is being thrust into a Magical Cold War than just, “Help us track down Grindelwald or else we’re cancelling your traveling visa.”

what would've been a much better plot is Newt's story and how he came to love the animals. Him trying to raise awareness on how the beasts are harmless unless provoked showing us how he develops his books and also expose us to a few interesting animals. Flashbacks to how he was bullied in school for being different, while his brother was always praised and loved. Leta lestrange being the only person that stood by his side through it all. All while there are references to characters we know and love (or hate), with dumbledore and mcgonagall being supportive teachers. This would be the first movie ofcourse.
The second and third instalments could focus more on the different creatures that exist in the world and Newt getting more recognition for his work while also having to fight smaller villains to spread his cause. The 3rd movie could've ended with a Grindelwald reveal making way for another (more serious) series where dumbledore and grindelwald battle it out. Bringing in more characters that we know like the marauders' ancestors, mcgonagall, the lestranges etc.

I think this was really more of a disservice to Grindelwald. Part of what makes him interesting is that he was before the time of Harry Potter, and that he is decisively a different kind of dark wizard compared to Voldemort. In the books we only briefly hear about him, and the only actual scene with him is one of redemption, where he refuses to aid Voldemort and helps Dumbledores legacy, him even supposedly feeling regretful of his earlier actions. He isnt supposed to be shown or explained. Him being a historical figure who expertly commanded the Elder Wand and was one of if not the most powerful wizard/s of his time and all times (eventually matched by Dumbledore of course) is all we need to know with just a few tiny more details for fleshing out. We can make up and imagine the rest. First the original movies ruined Grindelwald by changing the Azkaban scene to just be Grindelwald giving up the location of the Elder Wand. Then they did this, and fleshed him out too much when there wasnt really much there in the first place, and for the above stated good reason. Nevermind using Newt as a catalyst.

Both of them were good examples of how to leave out information the right way. As a young autistic person who had always been obsessed with animals, I resonated with Newt A LOT, as its incredibly rare to see characters like him (and me) be the main character in a fantasy action adventure. As time went on and the second movie came out, I saw him get pushed to the sidelines and I was frankly, very disappointed. I've yet to see the third movie, mostly because I refuse to give JKR any more money than I already have in my ignorant teens, but also because I know I'll be disappointed once again. I didn't see the sequel movies, but the fact that Queenie literally brainwashed him between the first and second movie completely ruins that entire dynamic. Much like it feels like the second and third movies ruined everything good in the first movie.
I will say this: Porpentina (Tina) is canonically Newt Scamander's wife, that is actually stated in the foreword of the original Fantastic Beasts book (the one the movie was "based on"), so that was going to be that way to begin with. I dunno, a lot of stuff was set up in the first movie that felt like it could really work, but then J.K. went all-in on Dumbledore and Grindelwald and nostalgia-baiting, like…just tell a different story in the same universe, woman, don't rely on old familiar names just to sell tickets! I refuse to pitch a tent in any camp regarding what sort of person she is outside of being a storyteller, but as a storyteller, at least, just…branch out, explore what you've made, don't wallow in your old work so much!

Besides Tina being miscast, she and Newt are a total mismatch. This is not a case of opposites attracting, but more like two people who should never consider entering a relationship. It is obvious the filmmakers did not even know, Tina was eventually going to be Newt’s wife, just based off the casting. Otherwise, I am sure they would have cast a different actress. Which is probably why they made sure to cast Newt’s brother, Theseus with an actor who had natural on-screen chemistry with Eddie Redmayne. Especially, since Tina and Theseus have the exact same job. The main problem with these universes, specially magic ones, is that the more stuff you add, the more inconsistent and nonsensical they become. Previous stated rules gets broken, new mcguffins gets added that do whatever the plot needs to (that werent used before and solve a lot of problems from the past, like that damn time machine), more characters no one give a shit about gets added and more sub plots gets added derailing the main story.
The Harry Potter universe gets a pass in half of the movies, because they mainly focus on the castle and isolated places, but it gets more and more inconsistente in the later movies. Mainly because the "magic rules" arent clear or get broken intermediately. Also because of the relation of "muggles" and wizards, it doesnt make sense. I understand that wizards wish to stay hidden because a war may occur or whatever, but it doesnt make sense that these wizards, that mostly think they are superior to muggles due to magic or whatever, live like they are in the 16th century or some shit. With no technology or anything, and apparently they know almost nothing about the human world. Seriously? They literally live among humans, and they dont know anything? Not even proper social behavior? They dont even know what "rubber duck" is? Its way too nonsensical. Add to this the fact that wizards around the world barely interact with each other, like they are different species that doesnt understand each other. Is like they never met before.
The Fantastic Beast movies elevate this problems to the max. Adding the fact that no wizard gives a shit about these "fantastic beasts". Is like they literally secluded themselves from reality, living in a bubble. Are you kidding me? And are you telling me that NO human, ever, found these insane creatures with destructive powers? Whats even more frustrating is that wizards do in fact interatct with muggles, via muggleborn students that go to hogwarts, where the wizards are. Are you really telling me that hermione wouldnt bring a regular ball point pen from home? Wich would eventually catch on and make quills go out of fashion as its a very inconvinient way to write stuff. Because thats what happened when pens was invented. We stopped using quilss because they suck. This is just one detail that proves that jk doesnt know how humans work, or that she thinks wizards are some kind of non-human subspieces. Humans all around the world have one thing in common, and that is that we’re very innovative. We will always find ways to make our lives easier, thats why technoligy is evolving so fast. So it doesnt make any sense that wizards are still living in the 16th century, but I honestly think jk just did that for the asthetics, and never gave it any more thought.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them would have benefited so much more if it was just about Newt. The Fantastic Beasts films had SO much potential. If I was Warner and wanted to bring the Wizarding World back to life with both Newt Scamander and Dumbledore vs Grindelwald films, this is how I would've done it:
    1. First film, very similar to what we saw in theaters with FBAWTFT. Just a younger Newt and no Jacob yet, because this gives Queenie a chance to have plot development besides "pretty, flirty witch who falls for a muggle". Oh, and no Credence/Grindelwald plot, obviously.
    2. Second FB film. A few years have passed. Tina is still bound to desk job (you can even add some scenes about her having to work twice as hard as her male colleagues and it still not being enough to be promoted to Auror again because they steal her credit), but she's also secretly investigating this wizard mercenary who, lately, has been kidnapping magical creatures. Newt's also been following this case, so he eventually crosses paths with Tina (and Queenie) again. He has the creature knowledge, she has information and clues about this guy and his whereabouts, so they join forces. Jacob is introduced in this film and Queenie falls for him. In the end, they all catch the bad guy and save the beasts. Tina is finally promoted to Auror again, and Newt pursues a formal relationship with her. Queenie and Jacob elope so MACUSA can't delete his memories and everything seems fine. Except, the bad guy tells the gang he was just following someone else's orders, and this person is too powerful to be stopped.
    3. Third FB film. We start at Newt and Tina's wedding. Just as they're about to go on their honeymoon, they're forced to pause their plains, because they find themselves in a mystery involving (of course) fantastic beasts and dark magic. During most of the film, they just catch henchmen and follow clues, until they encounter the big bad guy, who's been teased since the second film: Grindelwald himself, who's been using magical creatures to gain power (somehow lmao). But he's too powerful, so even with all the gang joining forces to defeat him, everything seems lost. At the last minute, they're saved by some mysterious figure, that incapacitates Grindelwald long enough so a whole group of Aurors arrive and imprison him. The mysterious figure turns out to be Aberforth Dumbledore! He tells them he's just doing his brother Albus a favor and to look for him if they want answers.
Intrigued by what would his old teacher have to do with a powerful dark wizard, Newt visits Hogwarts. Dumbledore was expecting them. He's kind of reconciled with his big brother (even though there's still a lot of resentment and discomfort to work through), and tells the gang he has been following their steps during this adventure because they were dealing with some dark magic he was familiar with, realizing sooner than later it was Grindelwald. He's actually been helping them the whole movie, being responsible for some clues and tools they've found in their journey, but he realized it all would have to come down to a duel with Grindelwald, and since he cannot physically fight him, he asked Aberforth to help them (he's also not ready to see Grindelwald again).
He tells Newt "it's all over now" because Grindelwald won't use magical creatures anymore, since he'd now try to rise to power via other means. Newt is worried because he thought Grindelwald getting caught was the end of it, but Dumbledore knows him too well and knows he won't give up so easily, although he reassures Newt and Tina this won't be their business anymore (hinting at him being the one who has to defeat him). He thanks Newt for saving the Wizarding World and for his compromise with magical beasts, and resolves to create the Care of Magical Creatures assignment to honor him, even offering him the spot as the first teacher for the assignment. Newt declines, since he thinks there's still a lot of work to do for the fantastic beasts out there, although he compromises to write a book with all his knowledge that Hogwarts can use on this assignment (the actual Fantastic Beasts book by Newt Scamander we all know) Newt and Tina finally resume their honeymoon.
And that's the end of the Newt Scamander trilogy! Ir would be followed by a Dumbledore vs Grindelwald series of films (that can be watched as a follow up to the FB series but can also be watched as it's own thing without watching FB beforehand), which may focus a bit more on Jacob and Queenie, since their marriage stands for everything Grindelwald despises. It can also have little cameos for Newt and Tina, because her job as an Auror would make her cross paths with Grindelwald's dark magic and Dumbledore's pursue of him more than once.
There you go! If you make the Dumbledore vs Grindelwald plot a trilogy too, you would have a total of 6 films, which is only one more film than WB has originally planned for the Wizarding World revival, so it's not such a big change and it works better than whatever they have going on rn anyway lmao.

    Original lore:
Newt is Charles Darwin. Wizards before were mostly focused on hunting or breeding new animals, usually specializing in exploiting one animal.
    First movie lore:
Wizards really don’t care about learning about anything if they don’t encounter it on a daily basis and usually see animals as pests, Newt is Jane Goodall but wants to be David Attenborough.
    The rest of the movies:
Newt is young Dumbledore for animals, real young Dumbledore won’t let him focus on his work because he’s the least evil but also most competent person Dumbledore knows.

Some of these misconceptions can be answered. I'm not saying the Fantastic Beasts movies are good, they have too many oddities to be saved at this point, but some of the points you were confused by can be answered.
    Legilimency was retconned.
In the Harry Potter books, Legilimency is an ordinary magic spell that any skilled wizard or witch can learn and it is cast using a wand, like any other spell. Harry takes private defense lessons against Legilimency under Snape, where he practices Occlumency - the specific blocking of Legilimency. The Fantastic Beasts movies make Legilimency into an ability more like Parcel Mouth or Metamorphamagus that some wizards and witches are naturally gifted with and cannot be learned. This does not prevent the existence of Occlumency, however, which is likely expected and explains why Legilimency isn't used in institutions.
The Mass Obliviate effect kinda makes sense - but is not well explained.
The Thunderbird itself doesn't apply the Obliviation effect - that blue vial that Newt tosses it applies the effect. That vial is venom that came from that creature Newt pranked Jacob with. During that scene, Newt says the line "Muggles have slightly different physiology". That line is meant to explain that that venom affects only Muggles with Obliviation, not wizards or witches. It does NOT explain how it affected the people indoors, as you say, unless you buy "mist" as an explanation. Everything about the "good" memories coming back makes no sense, I'll give you that.
The flying prison buggy does have a reason.
The Floo Network, Apparition, and Port Keys can all be co-opted by outside means and redirected to alternative locations. None are particularly safe for transporting prisoners.

Would've been more interesting to revolve a series around Dumbledore's family. How he became so powerful, his motives, conflict with his brother & sister, etc. Or you know, keep it about Newt.

I feel like putting the "Fantastic Beasts" concept together with the Grindewald conflict was the downfall of this franchise. If J.K. wanted to do things about "Fantastic Beasts" then the plot should have been more focused on that. On one hand it seems like the core idea was to show all kinds of different animals in the wizarding world and their stories but on the other hand it seems like JK was too afraid that this would be a weak story so she kinda threw the Grindewald/Dumbledore story in it as well.

They should have just made a completely separate movie about Dumbledore and Grindelwald. I found their relationship in the last Harry Potter book very interesting and I don't understand why the movie with them in it was so bad.

I dont like the story of these movies but i love the aesthetic. I really like the darkish, but egelgant tone of the 1920s/1930s in movies which is also why i like mikkelsen as Grindelwald way more. Depp looks very goofy while Grindelwald looks like an actually bad guy.

@@curnies - I despised Johnny Depp’s Grindelwald. He was severely miscast and looked ridiculous. Everyone in the theater groaned, when he was revealed. Mads Mikkelson was far superior and more in line with how Grindelwald was implied to be in “Deathly Hallows”. Plus, his iteration matched up better with Colin Farrell’s.

Not super weird that Newt is one of the first experts, given that he usually goes out to find creatures that don't just exist in magical space, but that are magical themselves, so they are more rare and much more hard to find. That's the impression I got from reading the book as a kid.
I would have loved a movie about Newt going on Indiana Jones style adventures to find crazy animals. It's such a shame that's not what this is. Best parts of the first movie for me was whenever he interacted with animals- that said, it was goofy and fun, and there was a good idea there, but it was completely undeveloped. She should have just written about Dumbledore instead, maybe with some students from the time in which it happened at Hogwarts, because now this has taken up the Scamander movie arc and we'll never get a good one.

10:05 this isn’t the first time in the series that “ligilimense” or how ever you spell it has been introduced. In fact in the original Harry Potter series, voldemort was extremely talented at oculumancy. Allowing him to keep his mind closed so others couldn’t see into it. I mean there is a scene in the HP movies where snape is trying to teach Harry oculumancy so Voldemort can’t look into Harry’s mind

    • @foxial5358
      @foxial5358 Před rokem +2

The difference is that in the original Harry Potter series, people had to practice in order to master occulumency, whereas Queenie´s telepathy is something she is born with and what she can´t always control (as shown in the second FB movie when she breaks down in the rain). Also, legilimency is not even mentioned not once during the entire original series.
