  • In my new series "Is it a SCAM?" I review products and services to find out if they deliver on what they advertise or if it's a scam and to avoid these products or services.
    Today I review the very cheap $50 screen printing kit from Speedball. They provide a screen, speedball water based inks, emulsion remover and a few other products. Is this a reliable cheap screen printing kit OR is it a scam? FInd out in this video.

    Speedball is probably the top screen printing suppy company. I like how easy they made this, there are tons of other methods you can do with this kit that can get pro quality prints. A lot of the screen print game comes with experience and just messing around with it. Coming up with new tricks.
    Perfecting your skill.
    Usually on any print, you are going to need 2 floods and squeegee passes or more, sometimes up to 14 passes or more, but I have never practically used over 5 passes on a customer order. Black ink is a great place to start. Once you get that down, move on to white ink. You will need a flash dryer/ flash cureer. You will do 2 passes, a flash and 2 passes, unusually it makes a great nice opaque white every time. If it looks spikey like the shirt fibers are poking up and feels like sand paper, it is from something called off contact, and your screens release and how tight your screen is in newton's.
    An old easy trick to fix this is to tape some washers or coins into the corners of your screen to make it let go of shirt more smoothly.
    I like to use a cut up old mouse pad.
    Also if you get this kit and want to move up to dark shirts and more colors.
    Get a cheap white plastisol ink.its a plastic based Ink, and it won't ever dry up in your screen.
    It only drys with intense heat.
    To flash dry in between your passes, you need either a heat gun and more time.
    A flash dryer.
    Or a bigger shop style conveyor belt style later on.
    M&R has tons of great equipment.
    I have heard of people using an oven, but I've never tried it.
    .
    You will also need a non water based ink photo emulsion to coat your screen with and burn your art into the screen.
    Ulano Orange is a great all purpose emulsion to get into.
    There are more advanced emulsions out there made for detailed halftone dot printing, a dual cure or diazo emulsion is best for those, but the ulano orange for halftone dots works great on a 200 to 355 mesh count and a 45 lpi up to maybe a 75 lpi but anything above 45lpi is pushing it without a dual cure or diazo.
    I use 55lpi but still have trouble losing dots or dots not washing out
    .
    Lastly you will need a different cleaning chemical to break down the emulsion.
    .
    And now for colored prints on dark garments, you will always need a white underbase. Unless you are going for a darker distressed or vintage look.
    Once you get your white underbase down, you put your color screen right exactly on top of it.
    To help align these two screens, put a short line on the top and bottom of your artwork. This is what we call registrationMark's, or reg Mark's for short, do test prints on news paper, or old tees, or anything you have plenty of for testing.
    I like to put my white down on a black test paper, then put a piece of clear transfer tape over the white print. AMD I'll wipe off the color ink from the clear tape multiple times till I get my reg Mark's perfect.
    Then I'll do a test print on an old shirt. Sometimes it is off a little from my taped tests just from me wiping the ink off, it moves my platen and tester around a bit. Always double and triple check everything in screen print.
    Once I know it's good and aligned, I will tape off my reg Mark's, and then get out the customers shirts, I will do one final test on the real customer shirt, if it looks good, I'll run them all, but keep an eye out for pinholes after the first 14 shirts, and after that, I'll keep an eye out for any new pinholes and tape em up.
    After they are done, I'll use a goof gun to spray out any pinholes.
    .
    You will need to flash your white underbase. Or its going to make a wet mess and possibly ruin your colored ink.
    .
    You can do 2 whites, a flash, then your color, sometimes this works great depending on the color.
    .
    But sometimes you do have to do 2 whites first, a flash 2 whites again, then your color.
    .
    Artwork tip. I make all art 300 dpi, and put a 2pt stroke around my color to help with alignment.
    .600dpi if it's super detailed and a 4pt stroke.
    This 2pt stroke can also cut into your white underbase.
    Sometimes I put a 1pt stroke on the outside of my color. And a 1pt stroke on the inside of my white underbase.
    Anyways, sorry for the long comment. Hopefully this helps some people out, just remember if you run into problems, youtube and google will have the answers.

A processof printing with a special ink with the unique ability will turn from a solid to a gas then back to a SOLID WHEN HEAT AND PRESSURE IS APPLIED TO THE TRANSFERS. As it allows you the ability to print on only on white polyester with varying degrees of quality depending upon the polyester content of the shirt 50% will look faded and dull while 100% will print a photo quality permanent image
    I am grateful for this video as I had found the kit for $39.99 at Hobby Lobby and had no idea what drawing fluid was or how to use the screen filler so now I know and since this I am reassured that I made a great choice as I have a opportunity to test printing on acrylic which is a Poly on a cotton substrate and learn before building a bigger machine with free plans derived from the internet for a 4 color single station Thankyou.
    PS you can get the plans for a press for free or purchase the kit or a 4 color screenprinting press at printingplans.com/

    Or if you have a printer (or have an access to one) you can print out an structure you would like to screen print (on a normal white sheet of paper) then precisely cut the outline of the design Preferably with an (x-acto knife) and put the cut out design under a screen, then screen print your design.

    One question though - have they faded in the wash?

    • @ReyesTheEntrepreneur
      @ReyesTheEntrepreneur  Před 6 lety +2

      The Carpenter's Daughter yes it does fade. Water based inks fade way quicker than plastisol but some people like faded looking design, it depends on the design

    • @terijhughes
      @terijhughes Před 4 lety +1

      Heat setting your prints does make them not fade. I do that and wash them a couple of times and they don't wash out.

    Yeh Reyes, what ink is the best to use? What is the best transparency paper to use for my HP ink jet or my HP laser jet printer? And when I convert to CYMA on the program should I be using those four colors for full photos to put on a shirt??? Or are those the colors to use for that I should ask? Please help very new at the screen printing part of my business. I usually only do vinyl heat press. Thanks a lot, love the videos

    After 4 months I finally took the plunge and made my first screen print. I learned a lot from that challenge. I learned a lot from your channel. One thing I learned by accident is that screen printing on a "girl shirt" that is stretchy causes the ink to split apart. Is there special ink for stretchy shirts or is there a special process for ink printing these types of shirts?

    • @ReyesTheEntrepreneur
      @ReyesTheEntrepreneur  Před 6 lety

      Their is. I've never had that problem because I use plastisol ink but I've never used it on stretchy fabric. I guess this is another challenge you're going to learn from :)

    Or you can design something on the computer & put normal white paper in your cutter and put the speed down & put the cut force at 1 or the lowest , or else it will cut through to your mat or even the cutter. Then use the paper and put it on the bottom of the screen and do a screen print

    Hey Reyes, quick question, when you do a vinyl stencil for screen printing, I used plastisol ink but I am now unable to reclaim my screen the normal way. Do you have any suggestions?

    • @inkrdb87
      @inkrdb87 Před 5 lety

      Tony P If its the glue not coming off you can first buy thick bleach then coat the screen 3 strokes and leave it to dry in the sun. After that apply Thinners...I think that's what you guys call acetone (I'm African) then blast it off with a power sprayer.
