This is a complete guide to using the Speedball fabric kit. I do an unboxing then go over how to do the photo emulsion method supported by the kit.
Thanks for watching. Feel free to leave me a comment below! - Jak na to + styl
I remeber when i did all my screen printing very D.I.Y right out of highschool. I had a particle board i cut at 30x40 and used some door hinges and c clamps to serve as a make shift print head. I made screens out of wood and used gorrila glue to glue the mesh to the screens. I also used a heat gun to dry my ink and a iron to heat set. Now im doing 100 shirt runs with a 4 color print press and a dryer.
Minecraft 5 gallon portable air tank
Motivational right here 🙏🏽
Dedication bro I hope to get to your place soon! I start my journey with screen printing Today 😭🙏
Im glad I'm not the only one who thought it was weird that there was no mention of letting the emulsion dry in a dark room. Its pretty important.
Thank-you for your time. The method was explained super clear. I'm excited to start!
I'm really glad I found a video explaining the kit and giving a tutorial because I was considering buying the SpeedBall kit. Thanks for this video!!!!
+monkey2nbige1bang Great! let me know how it goes! send me some photos! :)
Great video! Your video goes into way more detail and you get to the point. Thank you
Thanks for making this video. You did a great job making it very easy to follow....and you make cool stuff! I appreciate it!
Looks like you have a really nice yard. That's something to be thankful for.
Thanks for the vid man!!! You helped us make our shirts!!! Keep up the good work!!!
Awesome! thank you so much for posting this!
This was super helpful! Thank you😁
Fantastic tutorial.
Thanks.
Well done! thanks for posting!
Good video. Thanks You answered some questions I had in my head.
This was VERY helpful! I see this kit is available at Hobby Lobby for $40. After years of using on-demand printers for our band t-shirts, we have been interested in learning how to make more off our merch by creating custom-handprinted screened tees. Thanks for thoroughly explaining how to use this kit. 🙌🏾
Very good video, thanks!
great video bro!!
Thank you for your help!
good job, Nate!
nice little vid but kinda amazed he jumps right past the drying process...he didn't just spread the emulsion on there and then stick tape and draw with a pencil on it immediately right? this is a key factor.
zach wasil that's how I ended up messing up! I didn't know that there was a drying time!🤦♂️🏾 Thanks now I know!
Thanks Nate. Good Tutorial. I'm getting ready to get back into screen printing after over 35 years of having not done any. If you do a follow up let folks know the bulb wattage and exposure time. And, as mentioned elsewhere, what to do with the screen between laying out the Diazo and Burning the image. Again, Thank You & Happy Printing.
awesome job!
Wow. You saved me! I have not done anything like this and needed to do with my 10 year old daughter. This totally made it possible. THANK YOU!!! You are very kind.
The ultimate kit is almost identical to the once i go over in this video. You just get a extra screen, some more ink colors and a instructional DVD. This kit will work the same way the one above does, plus you have all the colors, so you mix them to get any shade you want. You should be all set. Let me know how it goes!
NEVER!! take your exposed screen outside to wash it out. Do it in a sink or tub inside so that the unexposed area stays that way. If it is exposed to the sun it may in fact begin to harden before you get it washed out. Also, keep about 1/4" between the screen and your medium so that the screen can get away from the medium after it is exposed to ink.
Can I have a small light in the room, like a cellphone light? Otherwise how can I see something in a pitch dark room?
This answer is now a year late, but once you turn off the light source and remove the glass sheet and design, you can take the screen immediately to the sink and begin washing out the unexposed emulsion. The normal room light won't effect the unexposed part. The bulb used to expose the emulsion needs to be strong about about 12 inches from the design. The sun outside can be an issue if you're in the direct sunlight and wasting time getting the hose ready and setting up some way to hold the screen. But in your house with normal light you can move quickly and start washing out the emulsion (dilutes the emulsion making it hard to be exposed). I use a soft toothbrush to LIGHTLY rub those areas with finer detail to push out the emulsion.
Nice job!
Thanks for sharing !😀
Youre Welcome! :)
Handy! Thanks!
hey nate!! the frame holding the image is good for a single use or it can be used for printing the same image several times?
Beautiful.
Hey Nate what kind of paper did you use to iron over the t-shirt to lock in the design?
how well did the image hold up after multiple washings? Thanks...
Hey Nate do you know if they sell kits with bigger frames to hold the screens?. I'm unsure, but the frame just looks small. plz plz plz reply I'm really considering this.
thanks
hey i’m back thx again nate
I want to know how ink is prepare for for tshirt screen printing. like pigment colour in liquid form , Binder paste is we mix any other things..if mix then please tell me what ???
Using the same design you did here, can I do this on multiple shirts without having to clean it each time?
(Like go right into making the next shirt)
I just want to screenprint t-shirt can you tell me what package should I buy. Because I really don't know what to buy I don't know the piece and the inks I need I don't mind any color
Thank you for this video
I watched this video 3 to 4 times
I have a question?
After printing productions how to protect a screen for tomorrow for same design
After remove the ink how to wash the screen without removing the screen from the missionery please tell su what to us chemicals or wash with clothes with a water
Please. Please. Tell us thank you very much
Yes, you can draw on the transparency as long as it's dense. Use some ink like super black India Ink by speedball.
How did you prevent the ink from soaking through that white shirt at the end?
can you use this ink to screen print onto wood or another surface other than t-shirts?
Do I have to use all the emulsion? Or does the mixed emulsion have a self life for future use? Thanks
thx nate
Also how and what did you print your design on? Can you just print design on mylar? And can you just print out of a regular printer?
Was your light just the standard fluorescent light?
Nate when after you put the emotion on how long should the emotion dry
Thank you
Hi! I just saw your vid and it was very helpful! I have a question though, I´ve got the same Speedball kit, and I was wondering if I have to make a test with the time I have to expose my emultion to the light too or if I can use the time you got (12minutes)...I dont know if it´s something that can change depending your location or if it works the same if it´s the same brand...I hope explained myself and you can tell me!! Thanks!
Yes, depending on your light source and how far away you are, your exposure time will be different. I cant give you a solid answer on exposure time, its something you will have to experiment with.
I'm on my 3rd try ran out of emulsion remover I wish I would of seen this video 1st and did the 5 step burn to test the time needed I have only got to about 5 mins and my glass fogs up and my transparency starts to shrivel up is my light too close to the screen?
Did you mix the paint with something or just put the paint directly? Thank you
What do you suggest most speed ball or photo emulsion sheets?
I just got All i needed to start screenprinting and tody I did my first print. Everything was ok, but for the screen cleaning...where i had two problems: I used the Diazo remover and the green emulsion came out quite well (not really perfectly) but it has lots of black ink stains (all around where the emulsion was) that wont come out.
Other problem is that the image that i have printed has stayed quite visible on the screen (not as much as the other stains which are black).
Thanx from Madrid!
Great Video! Thank you for doing this!
how long did you iron it for and how do you keep the ink from running ?
Great videos Nate! What heat setting do you suggest for the iron? Thanks
+John Andrew I put it on almost the highest setting. Thanks!
very informative
What are the clear sheets your using
How long do you iron it to set the ink?
I purchased the Speedball Ultimate Diazo Fabric Screen Kit from amazon, is that a good kit for printing tees? I've read the reviews but I'd rather have your input because you're experienced with there products
What was your light source? I'm confused because it activates with UV and I'm not sure which kinds of lights emit UV.
I've been doing it under sunlight, but it does it very quick, usually 30s-1min and there's a chance of overexposing it easily and bumping it because you're moving the screen outside and back inside. I'd prefer having an indoor light source so I don't have to move it while it's being exposed.
thanks! and i'll be sure to let you know.
Had a question. Once your image is on the screen how many times can you use it to screen t-shirts? Never actually screened any T's before. I'm just interested in the process. Oh, hey. Think I spotted the answer in the comments. Thanks for the video 👍.
what kind of camera did you use for this?
Do you need to use the sensitizer when your using a stencil?
im trying to start a youtube merch brand do you know how we could use a picture we have online and also where we can get solid color hoodies and shirts for cheap since we are college students
Also, you might want to put something inside the shirt to keep the ink from soaking through to the back! Great video though. You can also blow dry the emulsion in a dark room to get the screen to dry quicker.
How long does this last on the clothing
what kinda light sours do i have to use?
sir. thanks for the video just I have question where you do buy the transparency film?
+Gloria Melgar The Ezscreenprint comes with some. You can also get them online cheaply or at a office supply store.
Did you print the image on the transparency with a special printer?
How many of these t-shirts could you make with one of these kits?
And what is the point of having a 'screen printing machine' ?
I got mine and it was unopened wrapped in plastic....but the instruction book had writing in it like math subtractions, things crossed of the included list and recommendations...weird right.
It is a transparency. It does not come in the kit, although i feel like it should. you can get them cheap enough on ebay. I use an Ink Jet printer, so i have to use Ink Jet transparencies. They have a special coating that will keep the ink in place and not smear all over. So if you are using an ink jet printer, make sure you get Ink jet Transparencies.
I like that. Before i also do that but no clear.
What kind of light do you use to burn it?
just clarifying that you can reuse screen?
Hey nate when we finish a shirt with a certain color and want to do the same image with a different color on another shirt can we just wash the paint off and use the same frame with the image on it or do we have to go through the emulsion and image transfer process again? Also can we leave the image on there and use it again for another day or we have to start over again?
You can reuse it with a different color ink and you can leave the stencil for whenever you want to use it again.
Only when you want to change the stencil design do you remove the emulsion and start the process over again.
@NateScreenPrints1 What do you think is best for detailed logos: Speedball Screen (from the kit) or sheets of EZscreenprint?
+DanielSecarescu I love Ezscreenprint sheets. They always just seem to work for me. Sometimes speedball does not get all the detail.
+NateScreenPrints1 Thank you for a very useful answer!
Hi! Can you use one of those small "twisty coil" UV light bulbs for exposure (75 watts, not blacklight)? I looked at Speedball's exposure chart and they don't even mention uv light sources. Thanks for any help.
+Marvin Cake any light source will work. However your exposure time will vary. Make sure you are testing and experimenting with exposure times with a small test piece before you expose any full size sheets.
thx again
Thank you Nate - the stuff is so expensive - you want to do it right.
Hi, Nate! Does it take all of the emulsion for one use? If not, can I save the rest for later after being mixed if I keep it in the dark? thanks!
There should be enough in the little bottle for a few uses. Keep it for four weeks @ 90F, eight weeks @ 70F, and four months in the fridge. A coated screen is only 'good' for four weeks without be exposed. Then it's permanent until you wash it out.
what is the preferred light source for exposure, and what method did you use to clean the actual colored paint from the screen, while keeping the screen image in tact?
From other videos I've watched everyone else has used a 150 watt incandescent bulb
What kind of paper are you using
Can I draw a picture on a transparency paper and still screen print it ?
What kind of socks do you wear?
is this the best deal from speedball
the ink are plastisol or water based ink?
Im assuming you can use any fluorescent light for exposing the screen? I've never printed w/o an exposure unit, so I'm not sure what will or wont work.
+Ashley Smith Any light source will work. Even regular light bulbs. The only difference will be exposure time. Sunlight takes about 1 min. Florescent lighting about 10 mins. and regular bulbs can take nearly an hour. Its always highly recommended to test your exposure time with your preferred method
Hey Nate, quick question in regards to your heat cure. How effective is the cure to iron it vs use a heat gun? Typically ink needs to cure at about 300-330F (plastisol). Thanks
These are waterbased inks, they claim they can air dry and be cured with ironing. I do not believe that it's not as critical as plastisol inks.
How many washes do the print last?
How long do you dry the ink before heat setting it in addition how long did you iron over it? Thanks so much!
Did he ever answer this question?
Be careful one key factor that he dose not tell you is that you have to let the emulation fully dry in a dark room with no light before you expose to a light, (READ THE MANUAL THIS IS JUST A REFERENCE)
Lol ya i just fell for that
How long do I have to iron it for to make it permanent
How long will that take
Thank you, we found out the hard way
What kind of paper did he iron on?
are you able to use the tulip fabric paint? and if so does it stick to the screen and is it hard to remove the paint from the screen?
+702islandpyro I have not tried tulip fabric ink, but it should work great. Be sure no matter what ink you are using to clean the screen immediately to prevent the ink from drying and them blocking your screen.
thank you....
Do you like this product better than the EZSreenPrint Product?
Does overhead translucent paper work? If not, what type of paper do I use?
how about cheap SCOTCH self seal laminating pouches?
Get an inkjet printer from Walmart $30, then go to staples n get inkjet transparent paper $60/50 sheets. Or you can get the sheets off eBay 🤙
Wats the paper you used ?
What are the lengths?
How long did you it take you to let the emulsion dry before you put the transparency on?
Then how long did it take you to burn the image onto the screen?
Once the photo emulsion dries, you can keep the screen in a dark place for a long time until it's exposed.
Oh my goodness it's like film photography and print making at the same time 😳
Thanks for this informative video. There is something I don't understand. If I have to do it Ina dark room, how am I see something? What do you use for a light source, cellphone light, a small night light?
+Ni Cole It doesnt have to be a completely black room while youre working with it for a few mins. I usually use a low lamp on the other side of the room. When you let the emulsion dry though, definitely leave it in a pitch blackroom.
NateScreenPrints1 Thank you so much for your answer!
I've taken a screenprinting class and you can also use a yellow bug light. It won't effect the emulsion.
