    Oh my goodness. The Source Code for that has been printed in the 64'er Magazine as BASIC-Code. I remember typing this into my C64. And I was totally flashed when I heard it the first time. Those were the days...

      It wasn't Basic but lot of Hex-Codes. So you needed the MSE to type it in. Feel free to bring back the memories and type it in again. You can find it in issue 06/1986 on page 173: www.winz.run/c64/download/1986/index.html

      MSE. Didn‘t remember the name. I typed in this listing, too. Result was amazing as it still is.

      I so very much love Shades, but that bassline at the beginning is... taxing. I can actually feel it pulsing in my eyelids! Is old age catching up with me at 50?

    I believe in collective consciousness from this piece. I was a chiptune child, the moment i heard this tune the first time, few years ago, was different, a revelation. Like a part of me revealed. But it's not me, it's us. And i dived, discovered and loved C64 tune like i always have loved them.
    I didn't had a C64, i was on Atari ST, shade is not the best piece adapted to the chip, even now, so i suppose i never knew, heard it.
    Just to say, you guys are mad lover if i'm somehow right.

    That guy knew so pretty, that waveform 128 on the c64s sid is not a good choice for music, but used it in a harmless way... I bet I heard waveform 85 (not listed, but a very interesting sound though, light, flimmering, oscillating) somewhere in one of his titles... Ain´t it?

    The trademark 5 second Shades silence in the beginning was cut out? You ruined it! (j/k!!!!) Thanks for posting, awesome tune.

    Nein - die Filter kommen nicht rüber , vom Original -die 2 simulierten Stimmen - da fehlt mir was - habe das Lied stundenlang selber nach dem eintippen immer gehört

    • @noobtracker
      @noobtracker Před 3 lety +1

      Könnte einfach daran liegen, dass dein C64 damals den "falschen" SID hatte, es gab ja zwei Versionen mit ziemlich unterschiedlichen Filtern. Vielleicht ist das Stück aber auch für einen 6581 geschrieben, der Chip hatte sehr große Toleranzen, weswegen jeder 6581 anders klingt - dafür kann dann die Emulation auch nichts.

      @@noobtracker Hey noobtracker ^^, nice to see you here! To answer, there's two versions of this tune, both by Hülsbeck., one originally published in 64'er, and the next with filter corrections. As he wrote himself, ""When I composed Shades, I had a slightly out of whack filter in my C64 and I didn't have the time to cross-check with other C64s. Result is that the tune appears too filtered compared to my original intention. I released a little program to correct the filter in the next magazine edition after the competition. Here is a version that is much closer to how it was intended to sound."

      @@BixenteFabregas any how it shows how advanced his technique was at that time, possibly the best overall. Its to be discussed if his musical style matches Hubbard's or Galway's which i don't believe, but his technical skills are beyond them. Maybe. Where is the fourth track?
      He continued to show his expertise in games like Turrican and Turrican 2 on Amiga was the culmination of sound mixing at that time.

    • @BixenteFabregas
      @BixenteFabregas Před 7 měsíci +1

      @@bazziman2bazzi517 Each one of these composers made technical prowesses for the SID.
      Galway was the first (or at least a tie with Hubbard) to include digis in a soundtrack and also was the first who used fast arpeggios to make the illusion of a chord.
      Hubbbard had programmed his own player which used very little RAM comparing to Galway.
      Hülsbeck was the first to release a tracker.
      Generally, the stock c64 can play only three voices at the same time, albeit THCM (The Human Code Machine) has released privately THCMod to convert mods into one sid channel, thus giving the illusion of multiple voices.
      You can also mount or buy multiple SID chips to make more voices.
