    • @Wired4Life2
      @Wired4Life2 Před 8 lety +12

      +Youssef Arafat Then again, when else should he have won?
      He could've won for Rain Man, but that was his first nom (and Dave Grusin, who would win for scoring The Milagro Beanfield War, was an Oscar-less veteran at that point).
      He wasn't going to win for his next four noms (The Preacher's Wife, As Good As It Gets, and The Thin Red Line/The Prince Of Egypt in the same year).
      The Academy was too in love with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (which won Tan Dun the Score Oscar) to give another statuette to eventual Best Picture winner Gladiator.
      Then, Zimmer wouldn't get another nom (Pirates of the Caribbean was recognized for other crafts) until Inception, which *is not* a better score than The Social Network.
      Interstellar would've been a fantastic score for Zimmer to win again, but Alexandre Desplat was already having such a winless streak that the Academy finally gave it to him for The Grand Budapest Hotel (in addition to also gaining a nod for his Imitation Game score).
      At least Zimmer has one, and for a *magnificent* score. That main Lion King motif alone is worth his only Oscar. Granted, I think Thomas Newman's Shawshank Redemption score is the best of the nominees, and it sucks that Newman (like cinematographer Roger Deakins) *is still Oscar-less after 13 nominations*, but Newman losing to Zimmer makes perfect sense. It's the Disney Renaissance, plus Newman had the misfortune of splitting votes between Shawshank and Little Women, two small films at the time.

    • @youssef_arafat
      @youssef_arafat Před 8 lety +8

      +BlueFox94 I'm going to get mad and this reply won't be pretty for you have reminded me of a comment I wrote 11 months ago about the stupid injustice of that louzy organization called the academy...
      First of all, you have some valid points but you giving an excuse several times because other nominees haven't won before is not a thing.. It's not an excuse and you need to never mention that again in an argument; I just don't care if some other awesome composer hasn't won an oscar before, the academy should award for the "best original score" as the title of the award is, not the "best composer who hasn't won an oscar yet."
      And, secondly, you simply stating that Inception is not a better score than The Social Network as if that proving anything to anyone! Let me show how you stated that by typing the exact opposite, "well, The Social Network is not a better score than Inception and in fact it's even worse than How to Train Your Dragon."
      I'm not going to go through all my favorite Zimmer scores and complain why they haven't won anything or even get nominated (!) because there are so many (The Last Samurai, The Da Vinci Code and Sherlock Holmes to mention a few,) instead I'm going to mention some scores that should have won outright because of their outstanding nature that set the bar for everyone high afterwards: Gladiator (not a war movie ever since hasn't used choir to support instrumentals,) Inception, and Interstellar.

    • @Wired4Life2
      @Wired4Life2 Před 8 lety +2

      Youssef Arafat I'm not necessarily justifying an organization's tendency to spread the wealth around, but when other scores are in contention and you've won already, I'd be inclined to let it pass.
      I personally wouldn't have voted for Zimmer for any of his noms since The Lion King. (That includes Gladiator, which lost to a nice east-Asian score for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, courtesy of Tan Dun.)
      Plus, The Social Network's score is so fluid, so layered, and so nuanced. More importantly, it's integral to the film for which it was composed. Zimmer's Inception score is towering and iconic, but seriously, his 3-note, 4-note motifs are getting quite tired. It also hurts that that score set a low precedent for many action scores today. I've never seen anything in film music quickly become a cliche as fast as the "booming action score" and Zimmer does share some blame in that trope becoming perpetuated.
      Which is why Interstellar would've been a fantastic 2nd Oscar for him, assuming that Alexandre Desplat didn't have an extraordinary 2014 (in which he scored The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, Godzilla, Unbroken, and The Monuments Men). Zimmer's Interstellar score was colorful, subtle, booming when it needed to be, but quiet and emotional as well at other times.
      Zimmer would do well do compose more scores like Interstellar.

    • @youssef_arafat
      @youssef_arafat Před 8 lety

      +BlueFox94 To be honest with you, I don't even know what a 3- not or 4-note is, I just listen to music and judge it by my own taste, that's all.
      I remember one interview where Zimmer stated that just because a melody is so simple that doesn't mean it's not great and that the greatest example of that is how the the 9th symphony started out with one of the simplest intros ever and it's, well, the 9th symphony...
      As for the "let it pass" thing, that's just irrelevant; if you make the best score ten years running you should collect the awards regardless of any other aspect, or at least that's how I see it.
      And, let's talk about how integral and essential Inception score is, shall we? Did you know that "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" is the main theme of the whole score? How mind blowing is that, huh? The music of that movie tells a story of its own, buddy!
      And, by the way, the music slows down each TIME you go deeper in the dream! How is that for integration in the movie realm?
      Finally, let's talk about the "booming action score" as you've mentioned: Zimmer made that thing up! It's not his fault that everyone after him just copied the same idea (I know he did it himself sometimes, but that's totally okay!) which is, again, what they did in every war movie since Gladiator.. I'm not saying that just because he's the pioneer then that means he's better, because we have gruesome people who pioneered wrong ideas, but what I mean is you cannot question a man for an idea he created because people used it frequently after him till it became a mainstream or repetitive!

    • @Wired4Life2
      @Wired4Life2 Před 8 lety

      Youssef Arafat I know about Inception's score, sir. I studied it in high school. I'm aware of its subtleties, but when you have two well-integral scores, I go with the one that's more complex, more nuanced, and more layered. That's Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross and I'm honestly quite glad the Academy went with them.
      Whatever we may opine about the quality of his scores, what doesn't change is history. The Academy has not seen fit to award him for any of his nominated scores since The Lion King and, in the context of what his scores were nominated against, I don't have a problem with that. Frankly, I wouldn't have voted for him either, except The Lion King. What you or I say won't change that, until he makes a score so unique and magnificent (or at least probably not of the booming action score that has become so prevalent since Inception) in a year when everyone else's scores pale by comparison that the Academy will not resist giving Mr. Zimmer his 2nd Oscar.

Even when you see him in this video, were he not to draw attention to it, you'd have no idea he was nervous given, while a little energetic (naturally he's just won an Oscar), he still has great command and presence.

    I love how laidback Zimmer is about everything. And this has persisted into his fame years as well. Had the opportunity to see his live show and he's just so... human about it. Yes, he's the composer, but he's also a musician at heart. He performed in almost every song himself, either on the guitar, the piano or some other instrument, and after each song he had warm words and sharp-witted quips to share with his fellow performers. In addition to being one of the best composers to ever be born, he also seems like just a really fun guy to hang out with and it's nice to see.
