Alan Menkin wins the Oscar for Music (Original Score) for Aladdin at the 65th Academy Awards. Raul Julia presents the award. Watch more of the 1993 Oscars: • 1993 Oscars
Over 25 years after starting with the Little Mermaid, Alan Menken hasn't one bit lost the magic touch that makes his music at Disney sparkle with song and underscore. May he be blessed with a few more years of work with Disney and beyond. He made the world travel Under The Sea, invited audiences to Be Our Guest, took hopeless romantics to A Whole New World and a whole lot more. Thank you Alan for the music
The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Pocahontas are favorite top five Disney films to win both Best Original Score and Best Original Song. 😃❤️🎼
At the time, it should be to say the least. After Trevor Jones was responsible for Michael Mann's Oscar winning family classic, "The Last of the Mohicans" (1992) at Disney as an composer where he was fired three times from the film and then Randy Edelman finally took over and served his duties as an music director, arranger, conductor and orchestrator. The rest is history.
This Oscar For Best Original Score For Disney's Aladdin In 1992 That Alan Menken The Guy Who Also Did Disney's Hercules From 1997 And The Hunchback Of Notre Dame In 1996. Thanks Oscars Mate. X
I think this was my fellow Puerto Rican Raúl's only appearance at the Oscars ceremony. He deserved to be nominated alongside eventual winner William Hurt (who after receiving the statuette said "I share this with Raúl") for Kiss Of The Spider Woman, and I would add, another for his Gómez role in The Addams Family and for Best Supporting Actor in Presumed Innocent. Blessings from San Juan 🇵🇷.
Does anyone know which version of Arabian Nights is playing? It sounds like the movie soundtrack except the mix is very different (putting emphasis on the instrumentation, which makes sense here) plus there seems to be more than one voice, and the ending phrase is just wordless vocals when there are normally lyrics
I don't want to rubbish Menkin (because he doesn't deserve that) but this is what the Oscars for best music amount to. If the film is a musical, or a romance, then it has a good chance of winning, because it seems that those who vote only register 'songs' as music, or romantic music as memorable. Elmer Bernstein's only Oscar was for 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' (I'll let that sink in) and Richard Donner stated that he believed Goldsmith would not have won for 'The Omen' if he hadn't used a choir. Admittedly the nominations are decided by the composers themselves and they don't always cover themselves in glory either.
While Aladdin had a great score, it is more well known for it's songs rather than the score. IMO this Oscar should've gone to Jerry goldsmith's haunting score for "Basic Instinct".
I agree. Of the nominees, "Basic Instinct" was definitely the best. But the best score of 1992 was tragically left out. And that was Wojciech Kilar's work on "Bram Stoker's Dracula".
@@ronaldmcdonald2817 That’s not fair though. There’s a reason there’s five nominees for each category. To give an opportunity for others to be nominated and feel like they have a chance of winning. If just *one* film was to win in every category, then why have 4 other nominees then? Even if your favorite film loses in a certain category you think it deserved to win in, it’s still fair to have other films win even if they don’t win the big ones.
@@hunterolaughlin You do know that a film winning a lot of Oscars doesn’t mean people think they will win all of them. That’s why Lord of the Rings clean sweep surprised people because nobody expected it to win every category it was nominated. You do know of the expression “ It’s an honour to be nominated”. To be considered one of the best of the year is still an honour even if you don’t win. Your the person to give people participation awards.

Aladdin has great music.
Very well deserved award. Disney's Aladdin was the movie of my childhood, I love it, and the songs and score of it made the film memorable.
God Raul was so handsome
Raúl Julia 😭😭😭
what great times when we could go to movies at any week and be able to see 2 or 3 great movies. now, you're lucky to see a great movie in 1 month
adam kings I wish I lived in that time even though I was born in 93
I wish they had also nominated Wojciech Kilar for "Bram Stoker's Dracula"! This soundtrack was breathtaking!
Also, Howard's End had an incredible score!
How about Ferngully the Last Rainforest
Batman Returns should've been nominated too.
@@Whoa802 Only for both make-up and visual effects, which they're Oscar nominated in 1993.
@@manuelorozco7760 I'm not sure about this - Disney's 1992 animated flick didn't made the

"OF COURSE!!!!!"
The Last of the Mohecians should've been nominated at the very least. It's a crime how underrated that movie's soundtrack is!
That film in general deserved more nominations than the single one it reviewed.
Batman Returns should've also been nominated.

Ok. Bram Stroker’s Dracula can’t win in every category it’s nominated in. They need to have *variety* in choosing the winners in the other categories.
