Probably the greatest thing to come out of MTV was unplugged. Eddie's voice was on point for this entire performance, even for him. Some channel should be doing these unplugged concerts again. It gave us some of the most memorable music from that time period.

100%. The Unplugged series from the 90s was so powerful. We eve had late 90s/00s artists doing full orchestral concerts which were phenomenal as well.
      Good times.

What has always amazed me about Eddie's vocal performances is that he gets so much from so little. When I say "so little' there I mean his mouth and lower face are very locked in with almost no movement, but he gets and does so much within that structure. He's such a great singer!

I’ve got a cool story about Eddie Vedder. First I worked for an insurance company back in the day in the special lines field and remember actually speaking to Eddie about his boat policy! He said enjoyed calling instead of his agent! Very down to Earth and later we were able to meet at a Seattle Pearl Jam show so he was able to put a face to the voice on the phone 📱. ILL NEVER FORGET IT! RIP CHRIS CORNELL. The Seattle scene in the early 1990’s is unsurpassed by anything going on today!

    • @jkvinsland
      @jkvinsland Před měsícem

One of the stipulations MTV had for Unplugged was for everyone to be seated, to keep the venue more intimate along with the acoustical instruments. Porch is famous for having that jam session in the middle that they play different every time, all while Eddie climbs or hangs or jumps off camera rigging. Credit to Eddie for technically staying in his chair for it during Unplugged while simultaneously breaking the rule by standing on it, and Jeff by standing on the kick drum (the floor is lava!)

One of the most underrated vocalists in rock history. Dude can wail, dude can tone down softly, he puts his entire being into his voice. U cannot help but be drawn into the emotions he portrays in his voice and lyrics. Yes he muffles a lot of annunciation, but we all tend to muffle our emotions when we feel them. He just oozes depth in his performances.

Ed met his father on occasion but he was introduced to him as a “family friend” (He and Ed’s mother had divorced when Ed was very young). Ed grew up thinking his stepfather was his real father and only found out that his real father was his real father after he had passed away. Hope that makes sense.

I do appreciate your "technical" or "pedagogical" analysis of the way he sings. I believe however that he is a prodigy that never thought how wide his vocal cords were open or how much air pressure he put through his cords while delivering these beautiful sounds...For me Eddie is THE MASTER in moving hearts, in touching the deepest areas of your soul and making you admire the MASTER...and cry sometime ;-)

Hey Bethany… I LOVE your videos and every time I learn from your vocal expertise…Forgive me but I think you've missed two critical things with this song and performance: 1) acknowledging the powerful story and meaning of the lyrics and 2) please go again to 8m27s and watch Eddie's face for 10 seconds…He's not just singing a song, he's performing the emotions of the lyrics (you could call it the libretto!)…He is acting the emotion behind the lyrics with his face and body…It's not just incredible vocal execution…Just masterful.

Dear Bethany Hickman... as a lifelong Pearl Jam/Vedder fan, I can perhaps help sum up the "how" on Eddie's "back and forth" as far as the sounds he creates. As a songwriter myself, he writes stories of sorts. And whilst singing and performing them, he switches personalities/or the different perspectives when telling/singing. Hence a different voice for each person's perspective within the story. He's a genius with an insurmountable level of talent. And also, you my dear, are supremely beautiful and your energy is so very awesome... love ya and love your show!
    🤜💥🤛🙏❤️

The song that got me into Pearl Jam. After all these years. The song that got me into grunge ( my best style ever). Like music, like soul

I got to see them live in NY City at a night club. Totally unannounced and very few people knew they would be there. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life back then. I've been to a lot of concerts, but something about a private concert is just special and seeing Eddie Vedder up close, singing songs I was familiar with but had not really paid much attention to at the time, blew me away.

I'd like to suggest a UK band not many in the US are likely to have heard. Suede. Id recommend both Animal Nitrate and Everything will Flow. Are are kind of a UK grunge band but sound very different from anything more mainstream, and an unusual sounding voice.

I think Eddie is one of the most effective vocalists of all time. What I mean by that is, every vocalist has a purpose when they sing or express themselves, to make the listener feel or think something, or just to hopefully move them in some way. Eddie is ALWAYS effective in that purpose.

Probably one if not the best performance on MTV's unplugged. I mean the compleete concert. This song by it self is iconic! I love this concert very much and it did age fantasticly! I guess you can watch this in 20 years and still think this was great! It's a bit like the Live aid performance from Queen!
BTW I loved that you've said that they all wanted to jump out of theire chairs. The truth is that MTV forced the artist to stay sitting and legend sais that if they stand up during theire performance they would not get payed. At the end of the show they all jumped on the chairs and stood up during the performance. They did not care at all!

In the 90's there were styles of singers that stick in your brain forever... Pearl Jam, Bush, Days of the New, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots... to name a few for me. Always a car sing-a-long too!

oh man, i love seeing someone react to those videos that so much were part of me being a teenager. i have this on vhs (cannot throw it away) and watched it so many times back then. and i havent since. so it feels amazing to see it now with someone who clearly appreciates it as well! i am so surprised you did not watch the whole unplugged show after reacting to Black! :)
ps: the stone temple pilots unplugged from the same time was amazing as well!
