i wonder why since i was a little boy i always find rail way crossings so fascinating..we didn't have a car but sometimes my aunt would take her car and sit by a crossing for up to an hour and wait for a train to pass so i could see it..all these years later i still enjoy crossings and r.i.p to my long departed aunt for being such a kind lady

At 3:10, it says the railroad crossing is a private crossing. That means the crossing is on private property, but you noticed that the private railroad crossing is equipped with gates and lights. That's great! No matter if it's a public or private railroad crossing, every driver needs to have a warning or an indication that a train is approaching.

joethenark my town in Louisiana only has one signal on both sides. 4/7 of those are gateless cantilevers backed up by regular signals with gate motors behind them. the rest are standard signals with gate motors. overall they all have the best gs bell: the type 1 tuned to sound like a type 2. pretty cool. only trains we get through here are KCS, KCSM, UP, and NS. VERY FEW IC trains pass through here.

All 4 gates descend at the same time, which is out of order. A vehicle on the crossing would have no way to escape, that is why the 4 quadrant gates are sequenced to allow escape. The fact that there is a Stop sign just 50 feet from the crossing means that vehicles could get backed-up on the crossing with no where to go when the lights start flashing. These crossings with a Stop sign on a busy highway are, in reality, Death Traps. When vehicles are bumper to bumper, as often happens at rush hours, it would be easy to get trapped on this crossing.

Very cool. Have you ever gone to the I.C.G. line? In Monee it present have crossing gates and lights. Because it passes thru Monee in the Cut. The trains are below grade and pass under the bridges. You go and stand over the tracks and face the train as it goes under you. Gives a great shot of AWESOME you feel as if the train will hit you. It is a spectacular experience. I used to live there right along the Cut. The trains would blow their horns when a person is over the tracks.
Monee is my home town and I miss it.
Check it out sometime it's a great rush.

At 2:13, the railroad crossing only has warning lights and no crossing gates. Why are there no gates? The driver of the vehicle can easily ignore the warning lights and proceed through them. Crossing gates will help prevent motorists from ignoring the warning lights.

Interesting that they made those crossings quad crossings, due to 80mph, but didn't go ahead and make it a quiet zone while they were at it. But then putting a small median in is okay for a quiet zone? I like the plentiful presence of bells and pedestrian gates.

While this may be a stupid question, but I shall ask. Why do some crossings lack gates, why do some either have the bells ring constantly or stop after the gates have dropped? This has always had me wondering. P.S, I hate the electric bells.
