Secrets of Bones (2014)
Why can’t an elephant jump? Why did some lizards get legless? Which bird has a skeleton lighter than its feathers? Why does a whale look like a unicorn? How can a small snake swallow a big crocodile? Can a walrus penis kill a man? The answer to all these questions lie in the secrets of bones.
Welcome to BBC EARTH! The world is an amazing place full of stories, beauty and natural wonder. Here you'll find 50 years worth of entertaining and thought-provoking natural history content. Dramatic, rare, and exclusive, nature doesn't get more exciting than this.

Pigeons are the most underappreciated birds. They've been our domesticated companions for over 4000 years, as a source of food, as pets, as Charles Darwin's muses for studying genetics, as message carriers, as racers, as war heros, etc. Not to mention the fact that they're extremely intelligent and trainable. They are amazing. Do yourself a favor and look at how many breeds of fancy pigeons there are!
In what way have pigeons been war heros? :o
@@JoDeKeCh They used to deliver messages during war .
@@JoDeKeCh Look up Cher Ami the pigeon! she was a homing pigeon who successfully delivered a message that saved 194 soldiers even after being shot and loosing her leg.
A pigeon took a shit on my favorite hoodie,i've hated pigeons since that day
@@MellifexFarm It's nice to see the great Cher Ami getting her dues. I love all pigeons, with woodies being my favourite. They warm my heart!
They are strong fliers, I’ve had multiple times where pigeons were keeping up with me on the freeway
Pigeons are the fastest birds in normal flight.
Their top speed in level flight is up to 92.8 mph but I've read they can reach 112 mph
Up to 150 kp/H while doing sharp maneuvers at this speed without getting any injury.
The record for a Pigeon is 93mph in straight flight ~:
BBC Earth =knowledge
Clearly that pigeon is uncomfortable standing next its skeleton!
Never looked at pigeons like this.. thanks BBC.. now I know why pigeons make strong flapping noises when they take off...
Pigeons are the loveliest birds. Be nice to them!
Prettiest birds
Pigeons are amazing birds. So cute and friendly!
These underrated fellows have always been my favourite animals.
They forgot one part of the analysis....When the bird Flaps down the wing feathers are spread wide and all connected to push against the air to move Up, but as soon as it closes for another Flap you can see the feathers slightly angle and separate so the Air flow goes in between the gaps of the feathers, helping it to stay consistent when airborne :P
I love the scientific angle of this clip. Why are pigeons so good at what they are doing? Brilliantly explained!!! I just love this!
They are amazing and underrated .Not to mention rather beautiful *
They are so much associated with the dirt of cities that most find them ugly.
@@frizstyler Guess the same could be said of sparrows , certain people , .Have so many people become ultra superficial and judgemental .....After all the humans made the dirt and still do ..Ironical --
Ditto
The greens and purple on there necks are angelic
I love pegions....they are so cute & energetic. They coo so sweetly!!
Unless you live in multistorey building
👍👍👍👍👍
Pigeons are my favorite animal. Thank you BBC.
They forgot to mention how they drop excess ballast to help maintain flying height and their pin point accuracy when letting it fall.
2:03 stop it u are freaking me out..is that my skeleton ?
Why are you freaked out? You have a skeleton too
@@sgrpwz i know ..it a meme
@@081sheshasaayeetm6 *its
@@081sheshasaayeetm6 Don't be rude to the birds of nature who lord made. Not a meme comment! I don't agree with you.who liked means doesn't like your comment.
@@Charlotte-fv6uu ur Lord didn't make anything..get out of ur fantasy comics.. it is evolution kid
Pigeons are just magnificent.
I LOVE the HD slow-mo take off footage 😊
I used to own pigeons. They are incredibly smart. They could fly to a different city and return few days later. They also used to do backflips with a command.
Can they fly backwards?
@@Msfenyloetyloamina
No - the only birds that can fly backwards (and upside down!) are hummingbirds
Pigeons are amazing to watch. I feed wild ones and love watching them fly up to the roof like little harrier jets ❤️
I Love Pigeons and can't wait to have some of my own...
please don’t
I love how she's curious about the skeleton too
I'm just watching Smudge watching their hand movements hoping to get some of that treat.
1:13 to 1:15 Absolutely Graceful!
Thank you for the in depth video. I always appreciate quality content
Pigeon: "Mate, Bruce is that you?"
Bruce's Skeleton: "Hey Larry"
Beautifully recorded. How tough a vertical flight is seen in wing stroke pattern where wingtips touch each other ventrally & dorsally. Curiosity is how much power at the initial stage is attributable to leg thrust.
WOW that was very informative video loving it so much! Great job as always BBC Earth!
Love that the pigeon trusts its wings ♥️
Thank you so much BBC!
Absolutely
Awesome video BBC Earth . This video is very interesting.
👍👍👍👍
Stunning footage!
Wow this is mesmerizing!
Great video! Thanks for this view behind the scene!
that short music tune from 0:10 to 0:36! i heard it before in a videogame called Life is Strange.
it's not originally from the game but it also used that song.
Alt-J - Something Good, José González - Crosses, Syd Matters - Obstacles.
Have a good day. :)
@@4u7Ron alt-j , thanks.
I was looking for the name.
Was expecting pigons fighting
so beautiful ...
Never looked at pigeons like this.. thanks BBC.. now I know why pigeons make strong flapping noises when they take off & what a cute pigeon...
"Revali's Gale is now ready!"
Amazing video, enjoyed watching.
Slow Motion Pigeon Fight | BBC Earth
Really wow
Thank you so much for this wonderful video! It shows that you really love them! I am very happy to learn about them! ❤❤❤❤
Amazing!!!!! I love them sooo much!!!!😍❤
I Love BBC Earth ❤️
My From Brazil 🇧🇷
That was really interesting and informative. Thank you! Greetings from Austria 😊👍🇦🇹
Yeah.
Nice taking this effort
Pigeons and Alt-J, two of my favorite things
Fun fact: when pigeons fly the sound of the feathers are a alarm system so when 1 flys all flys
very interesting
Great unbelievable
this 2:45 second video is way more helpful to me than the 3 hours of mediocre instruction of my college animation professor
I've noticed before that bird's must exhurt tremendous energy in order to take off. Imagine the first ever flight of a bird when growing up. Once in the air it's easier.
No wonder they are so hungry! Lol
BBC earth ❤the love
wow
❤Love the name *smudge!*
They can fly because of the keeled sternum..To which it's wings muscles are attached..Nice video By the way
Every fiber of the flying rat has evolved to be as annoying as possible and still be able to evade at the last second before your kick reaches it.
I thought it was a epic slow-mo pigeon FIGHT
LOL
Great video. If I see them landing vertically, I ask myself if they are the only birds with this capability.
"Ever seen a baby pigeon"
BBC Earth Can you talk about hummingbirds?
Cool video👍🤩
so nice videon 👏👏👏👏
i love it besties, best video ever. Kapounek loves you all babygirls
love you too kapounek
Please make a video on secretary birds
Whenever the pigeon lifts up, in my mind I hear the song you raise me up, from secret garden! ^...^
0:30 wow... she took off with such an explosion that only her bones staid behind!
Tremenda Paloma Acere
Alt J something good in the background yo
Awesome Video 🇮🇳
I weirdly had this conversation the other day, but can anyone explain why they make that whistling sound when they take off? Is it their wings or is it vocal?
They can fly up to 90 mph and 600-700 miles in a day. They are the best flying birds in the world and they are highly intelligent.
What was the point of the end??
Probably just a new outro
not me using this for my school project reference-
0-100 kph in 2 seconds? WOW
43 crows disliked the video.
Did anyone hear "Something Good" by Alt-j at the beginning or was that just me?
God is simply perfect!
I came hoping for a pigeon fight
I hope science will be able to bring Dodos back one day with cloning. They were in the same family as pigeons.
Hi
0 to 100 real quick!
Can spotted dove fly vertically also?
How long can a pigeon fly without taking a break to land?
pigeon approved
What is this program called? I saw something from this guys on the barn owl and was transfixed. would like to watch the whole program.
I've this type of pair of pigeon
Would be nicer to show actual air flow path.
Grwt video but umm BBC... can you explain what elephant seals have to do with pigeon flight?
@Bryan Kirshon Yeah yeah, we know but it was still a pretty weird choice 😂
羽が美しい・・・。最後のアザラシ?どんだけ口開くのw
I love them birds like if you do to
Please do think I’m a bad person lol but I thought this video was titled “...fight”.
I promise I don’t watch animals fight. I was just curious as to why BBC would upload a bird fight. 😂

Wings produce lift force by newtons third law of motion
One time I saw a seagull kill a pigeon and eat some of its guts. In the middle of the city on a busy street.
I thought I read “slow motion pigeon fight” I’m disappointed ☹️
one flew into my window this morning
