  • Ced Gee stops by #UniqueAccessEnt to discuss why he feels he shouldn't have produced Tim Dog's LP. The Ultramagnetic MC's rapper also tells #SorenBaker about how Salt-N-Pepa's success cost his group. Let us know what you think.

    Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
    Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
    The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
    Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
    Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

      What it is... There's a sense of clout that came with being the first to put your hand on an unused record and flip it for the world to hear. That's why producers get up in their feelings.

    I get why, but pity Ced Gee has mixed feelings about Tim Dog's album, because it's a great album, and a personal favourite. To me, as an impressionable teen, it never came across as a negative record, just brazen bravado over some stupendous beats. Tim Dog was always riding that narrow line between real and larger-than-life charicature, that's what made him so entertaining. As a fan I'm kind of glad Ced didn't think that way then, because we would've missed out on a classic.

    • @pentagramparsons
      @pentagramparsons Před 3 lety +1

      I agree. And the beats were out of this world great! Kool Keith himself were even amazed by what they cooked up for that album, just fantastic stuff. And as far as the lyrics on Fuck Compton for example, they felt like a breath of fresh air on release. "Fighting over colors? All that gang shit is for dumb motherfuckers!" Hahaha - still dope imo

      Ced Gee, understandably, if you ask me, regretted producing the _song_ that precedented the NY-LA rap war. Yet the song-namely, Tim Dog's "Fuck Compton" single-was superficial. New Yorkers never took the song, let alone its rapper, seriously.
      Death Row Records' success, turning rap music into Top 10 popular music, soon incited New York rap fans' territorial aggression against Los Angeles rap. Industry sources would stage a NY-LA rap war, gratifying cultural forces that craved a NY-LA rap war, without Tim Dog.

    SNP are releasing a biopic next year, so Herbie should get some spotlight on his name from that and hopefully with interviews that’ll follow, Herbie could be highlighted and a new generation can know who this producer is and all of his accomplishments.

I recall Too Short saying he wanted to put out a conscious album in the mid 1990s to balance all of the other type of music he did but the record label return that project and said that they wanted the pimp, player, mack, bword music from Too Short or his project would sit on the shelf. "NWA tried to suppress (Tim Dog's album)" ....uhmmm by then NWA broke up and had their own inner struggles. Besides, alot of Compton rappers replied to the "Fkk Compton" song like Dre and Snoop, DJ Quik, MC Eiht. Having said that, as a big west coast music fan (as well as real east coast hip hop one as well) and a Los Angeles native...I loved that Tim Dog album. The production, the satire, and Tim Dog's delivery of his lyrics almost as it was the dopest shit even though it wasnt lol. But definetly a classic album
