If you ever want to make a SEAL laugh tell them you've heard that the movie Navy Seals is the most realistic movie about the SEALs ever.

The driving emotion of conservatism is fear. This is why the country moved to the right immediately after 9/11.
Conservative think tanks have known about this fear for half a century now, but instead of dealing with their fear, they decided to use it against The People to keep us "in our places."

Good day to you, and thanks for the word about the young. People my age have a tendency to think "we toughed it out and we're OK, so they should just tough it ought too." As a teacher, I know that is not well [if at all] thought out. It's a very different technical, social and political environment; and though the threat of nuclear war is a bit lower the young have to deal with possible mass extinction due to climate change, poisoned environment, a dysfunctional [if not actively destructive] government, and educational and employment insecurity. In fact we would have been more stressed and fearful if we had had the vast amount of information tech aimed at us that the young do today. My family had a wall telephone [the rotary dial was replaced by buttons when I was in high school], a TV and each of us had a clock radio, and that's it. Oh there were newspapers, too. I remember watching JFK's announcement of the Cuba blockade on my grandmother's tiny B&W TV, and it was kind of worrying, but not as much as can be instantly magnified today. I used to fear when I deployed somewhere that the cold war would become hot and I would never find my family again. I had nightmares about it. That was well over 30 years ago. I take for granted how many people never had to experience that Cold War. Some how we all just lived with it. It was just how things were back then. It finally ended though, without the mushroom clouds we all feared.

My older brother and sister were at the tail end of " Duck and Cover " drills in school. Talk about scaring the people. All to justify spending more money on defense. Back then it was the creeping threat of communism. IE; China, Russia, North Korea, North Vietnam etc. Yup, a different socio-economic system scared the shit out of the influential, rich and powerful capitalists around the world, some of it anyway. The only difference today is those influential, rich and powerful capitalists have all struck deals with these Communist countries for cheap goods and labor. And by shipping those american jobs over there, they got out of paying taxes over here.
General Smedley Butler exposed our system for what it is a long time ago and we haven't changed anything but the rhetoric. Unregulated Capitalism will destroy this country from within. Capitalists have a single master, profit. If they were patriotic, they wouldn't do business with communist countrys. They are our sworn enemy I thought. Or maybe it's just another Socio-economic System different from ours...

All JSOC operators are continually training to maintain their state if readiness for their next mission and are supposed to be "quiet professionals" and, even though movies and t.v. shows have glorified many of those units, recently some of those "quiet professionals", i.e. SEAL Team 6 since the Bin Laden mission, have been anything but that. Now there are accusations of drug abuse, unprofessional conduct, and a monetization of the SEAL brand levelled at current and former members of SEAL teams like Eric Greitens, Robert O'Neill, and Edward Gallagher.

I was surprised, and saddened, by the correspondence from a subscriber, which opened this video.
It opened with the line: "I wasn't alive, during the Cold War," then went on to express the correspondent's fear at today's military training.
I'm from the leading edge of the Baby Boom ... 1946. We lived with fear, for decades. Over the years, we spent hours of school time engaging in drills that were to prepare us for nuclear confrontation. It always seemed to be just-around-the-corner.
I find no fault with authorities having made a concerted effort to plan for dire "eventualities," when so much was uncertain.
But, I recall the relief, and relative confidence, that came with the end of the Cold War.
Of course I want the Seals, and other U.S./allied forces to train to be at-the-ready. But, I don't want to see younger generations be steeped in the feeling of threat, that we were.

They also trained for Iraq/Iran Afghanistan settings. Our troops always train for possible and probable conflicts. I am so glad they do. Our troops are safest when trained. While we lived with daily war game booms that were stronger than a lot of earthquakes we were aware of how useful the practice was.

We had 3 evolutions of a particular search operation.
The first ended in less than half an hour. The opposition was a young clerk.
The second took only a little over half an hour. The opposition was the logistics officer.
The third operation went over three hours, and then required calling on the opposition to put himself in a compromised position to end it. This was an intelligence operative with knowledge of the subject at hand. Had it not been called, no one was certain if he ever would have been found.
The CO (Marine Colonel) was quite proud of the first two rounds, and upset at "his" training being derailed the third time. However, in the debrief, the SeAL Commander approached the intel guy and asked him how realistic was the operation, what were they doing wrong, and how could they address it.
SeALs and Special Operations are not the characters you see in shows. People learning and adapting just don't make for good entertainment.
