I hung up the Scarsdale, Atkins, Keto, Mediterranean, Carnivore, and all other high-protein diets. Sure I lost about 10 pounds with high protein diets but the weight loss always stopped and I gained more back even with exercise and compliance with the diets. I finally figured out that the weight was a combo of fat and muscle mass from these protein diets. My goal was to take the excess weight off of my frame due to bone spurs. I started with Pritikin's maximum weight loss diet and now McDougall's diet and the weight is effortlessly coming off! Chunky... that's what I used to be called. 😄

I wish I would have found you years ago I wouldn't be in the shape I am now. My doctor is a quack!! I've lost 126 pounds and my diabetes is worse then ever. I had the sleeve surgery years ago and that was a joke . All i've been told is lose weight and you'll be free of diabetes , I still have 65 pounds to not be morbidly obese . I bounce from starvation and Keto because all I've ever heard is Carbs are bad. I'm not an angel with food because I would've never had weighed 345 pounds but that's a different story. I'm going to do this the way you have explained because I'm tired of being as you've said sick. I've told my doctor for years that I"m sick that I don't feel good that something is wrong and all he has always told me it's your diabetes. Well when you can't function and you walk like a drunk staggering falling against the freezer doors in Walmart or brain fog and can't remember what your saying in middle of a sentence. When you are so weak to walk you have to really concentrate on putting one foot in front of the other it's scary. I'm on Metformin and Glipizide, I don't know much about these medications but I think they're killing me. I think my muscles are starving and not getting the energy to function that's why this fatigue is so bad. I told my husband that I was dying a slow death but my sugar won't go under 198 even when I don't eat and go off my diabetes medicine which I did here a couple of weeks ago just to see what would happen but maybe I wasn't off of it long enough to really to get the build up of glucose out of my organs maybe . I don't know . I can't go to my doctor right now trying to find health insurance since we lost our Medicaid first of April . My doctor is all about stay away from CZcams , oh and starches. lol I got to find me another doctor. So sorry this is so long .

@@emilyantiqua I went tonight and got strawberries, rasberries, oats, almond milk. Ate that tonight and loved it . I never liked milk but almond milk oh my it's so good. lol I got me some cabbage, tomatoes, cellery. potatoes . We always had potatoes at supper and mom always bought frozen peas and corn and she canned green beans, dad grew a garden of cabbage, potatoes , cucumbers, corn, green peppers. Mom canned everything she could get her hands on . I've always loved kruat , I'd eat it out of the jar . If you'd put a piece of choc. cake or kraut in front of me I'd choose the kraut . lol Love pickled green beans they're so good especially with mashed potatoes. I don't like pickled corn but my brothers all liked that. We had apple, pear and a mulberry tree. Dad made mulberry and dandelion wine. He could really make wine nothing like the store junk . It was a good life back then . We had a beautiful big grapevine and I'd pick grapes nothing like the grapes in the stores. We had rhubarb it was a treat when mom made rhubarb jelly she'd give me a little sugar I'd dip a dip the rhubarb in the sugar and eat it . Oh it would make you pucker but it sure was good. Kids these days have no idea what they're missing. I was skinny , I didn't like meat, milk , cheese, loved my veggies, loved my potatoes and my mom was the best cook around. She made a potato bread it was so good. She also made a whole wheat bread that I loved but I liked it hot but didn't like it once it cooled. I'm really excited about my journey because it's the foods I love and have missed so much. I'm so sorry this is so long but one more thing I was taking my vitamins last night and watching Dr. McDougal just had popped them in my mouth he turns looks at the camera and says don't take those vitamins their poison and I spit them out into my hand then he says you can take the B12 my wife and I take ours and I say oh okay and I put my B12 back under my tongue . Now you tell me it wasn't meant for me to find him. I had prayed 2 hours before for God to help me that I couldn't do this no more that I had reached my limits I just wanted to die. I give God all the praise and I just want to say God bless you Dr. McDougal for helping people so many have forgotten why they started down the path they had chosen . Thank you Emily for taking time to respond back , God bless you also. My mom died at 50 I lost her when I was 18 years old. I'm 56 now , I lost a brother he was only 42 years old to his health , he wouldn't go to the doctor , he would've been 68 years old . I have 2 other brothers and I have 3 sons I'm doing this to show them this can be done . I want to keep them here longer and healthy . We all aren't small people . People say we must come from the Viking people or something. LMBO !!

Very high quality lecture. I completely disagree with his conclusions about fruits though. He contradicts himself when talking about how excess calories from glucose are burnt off and not stored as fat. Fructose doesn't even raise insulin, comparatively. I've yet to meet even one long-term fat fruitarian in my life. Fruit, starches, and all sugary foods are self regulating and almost impossible to overeat. Believe me, I've tried. You just can't do it. McDougall seems to think the insulin spike will prevent weight loss as well which is more rubbish. With a plant-based high fruit, high veggie, high starch, low-fat diet I've lost over 100 lbs, going from 235 to 135, lean, and have remained that way. Tons of health issues: Gone. There's plenty of people who have done the same or similar. So while I agree with McDougall 90%, I say eat as much fruit as you want, that includes fruit juice, fiber or not. Just as long as it's fresh and homemade in a slow juicer.

Agreed, and he’s not saying you should be eating extra sugar, just that they did that in the study. I think he’s pointing out that eating extra sugars aren’t going to affect your health and weight in the same way that eating extra fat will.

A fixed metabolism can have significant amount of fat though. And "good fats" do exist. The ratio of MUFA:PUFA:SAT fats make a difference in whether or not your body is headed for hibernation (slow metabolism in torpor) or emerging from torpor. The french paradox is an example of this. They would eat plenty of bread covered in butter (think croissants) and would remain lean (until more recent years). And fats like stearic acid have metabolic benefits. Not to mention the fat soluble vitamins available from healthier fats. I am not pro-keto, but he attacks keto unrealistically. I don't think I'll ever do keto again, but for metabolically healthy people, a short stent has benefits.
Basically, a super heavy starch diet is likely very reasonable for metabolically compromised individuals, but if the metabolism is fixed, you can have healthy saturated fats (butter and cacao butter). Avoid MUFA (olive oil and avocado oil) and PUFA (seed oils like peanut, sunflower, safflower, etc). Avoid them completely.

No he does not. Of course if you are already diabetic you should not be having natural sugars but those who are pre diabetic or obese/overweight can switch to an all vegetable/fruit diet with starches and do light exercise such as walking (with approval from their dr) and the weight will come off. Of course anyone with any serious health conditions should always see their dr before starting any weight-loss or exercise program.

I have an ex. After a month of eating this way they were off their medication and their insulin was stable. Before that they had been type 2 diabetic for over 8 years. The only times issues that were experienced were when they ate white potatoes or white rice. I think that it was just too soon to try to incorporate them into their diet because they were able to eat sweet potatoes and brown rice with no issues.
Needless to say they didn't stick with this way of eating because misery loves company. Some people are just hard headed. So they went back to eating whatever and going back on medication. Nine years later they had a stroke. Not something common at their age.

You need around 10g's of fat a day for your gallbladder. Most plant foods have enough to satisfy that but if you are concerned just drizzle a little cold pressed flaxseed oil on your food, eat some nuts, or put some avocado on your salads. A little fat is no problem, just don't overdo it. 👍

Because they are ignorant. Look up Ornish and Esselstyn. Their heart disease reversal studies where about 10% of calories from fat. People's clogged arteries opened up and lost weight. No other diet has been shown to unclog arteries. They never had hormone problems. They probably say that because a lot of our hormones are made out of cholesterol. But our liver is able to make whatever cholesterol we need.
