About Maniacs Garage and its creator:
My name is John. Over the past few decades I have built some pretty crazy rides and this one may be the craziest! After spending the last 15 years working on my Real Estate business, raising a family and help plant a start up church, I am ready to embark, along with my son and a group of friends, on a new project.
However, this is not just any old project, we are going to attempt the first ever 1949 Ford Shoebox chassis swap to a 2008 BMW 335i.
Keep in mind that we don't do this for a living and the budget is very limited.
Will we make the deadline for SEMA 2020? What kind of challenges will we run into along the way?
Come follow along and make sure to SUBSCRIBE and share it with your friends!

Looked good with the BMW Wheels, in under the Fenders.
Agree... it looked more classy and old skul
Yes, it did look cool with the wheels tucked but it also looked like any other chopped Shoebox Ford. Now where would the fun be in that?? LOL
HI FROM THE UK I WANT TO DO THE SAME BUT WITH A HONDA ACCORD CHASSIS OR TOYOTA MID ENGINE CHASSIS AND USE A CUSTOM FIBERGLASS SUPERCAR BODY THAT IM DESIGNING AS WE SPEAK . BUT MY ONLY CONCERN IS HOW WILL I CONNECT MY FIBERGLASS KIT ONTO MY CHASSIS ?CHEERS MATE @@ManiacsGarage
@@user-dn9kk9qu5y interesting!! Better build some mounting points into that fiberglass, as you don't have the luxury of just welding on tabs like we could.
Love the idea, love the concept, the wheels, I am not sure. Looking forward to more videos
Thanks for the comment! Check out the newer videos to see how the wheels turned out. We're still dialing in the fenders and tuning the BMW engine.
The car was looking awesome…….. and then the wheels🥺 why?
because they're going to make it a wide body with over-fenders...
It was always planned to be a wide body.
That's not the biggest problem, the biggest problem is why Ford body wasn't washed from rust and old paint before mixing it with BMW platform? Even european and asian know how to do that, but this guys for some reason just left it like this.
@@apocalypsecat1665 Saying it like europeans and asians are some underdeveloped beings.... But you are right, it should have been treated. Maybe they will do it later as it looks like the body can come of 'easy'.
@@apocalypsecat1665 it's not as if it's going to be daily driven, it's not gunna see rain, look at the area they live. Looks dry as.
Respect the labor ! ! ! Not a fan of half the wheel outside the body.
Thanks! Check out the newest videos to see how she's looking now. Will likely redo the fenders one more time at some point.
Body lines would meld better with wide body fenders to house those wide wheels.
@@booyakashaboy7250 May still be in the future for this project. Thanks for your comment!! Happy Thanksgiving!
These body swaps are the the ultimate cool factor for me. I saw a late 90s/00s jaguar xjr v8 with a Mk2 style body recently and that reignited my love of these body older style bodys put on more modern car.
This is cool! Can’t wait to see this finished!
Thank you!
I must say that this is one of the coolest cars I have ever seen. I love it. You got me wanting to do one, or something similar
Thank you very much! Check out the newest videos, we're almost at the finish line with this project. After that we'll post some fun driving stuff. Good luck on your future project! Please subscribe if you haven't already!
Took a clapped out, POS '49 Ford, that would most likely NEVER have been rebuilt or restored, and did something truly bad ass with it! Kudos, guys. This is outstanding! Love to see it completed.
Thank you and you are correct! This 49 Ford was sitting unfinished, incomplete and rusting slowly away in a garage for 20 years. So yes you could say that we saved it and turned it into something unique that will turn heads. Thank you for following the build!!
Can’t wait for the finished product!’
Thank you! We can't either lol!!
Wow! My first thought was "Bruce Willis is modifying cars!" 😂😁 thanks for the video! Greetings from Berlin, Germany.
That's pretty good, it took me 12 years to body swap my wife.
😵💫
It was great talking to you and seeing the car in person at SEMA 22 .
Such a badass build!!
Thank you!
Very cool project.. love those 49-50 Ford's...
Thank you! I, personally had a thing for them when I first worked on one in the 90's (frenched headlights and tailights). I knew then that one day I'm gonna cut one up and make it radilcal! Thanks for following!!
Wow! Looks great!
Thanks!!
That is an awesome project... love it
Thanks Rick!!
Your crew is fun, good work everybody!
Thanks Mike! Yes, the guys are great!!
Amazing. That's a lot of work.
Thank you! It has been but I'm so in love with how it's coming out. Long way to go still. Thanks for following the build!
Not even 2 minutes into the video and you guys have already inspired me even more to finish my Cavakota (Cavalier-Dakota) project truck. You just got yourselves a new subscriber, dudes!
Sorry for the slow response! Thanks for your comment and we're glad you are inspired!!
@ManiacsGarage No problem! I should be posting a video or two of the project next year. It's still sitting on cinder blocks 😅
Awesome video and build
Thank you!!
Danke. War sehr interessant.
That is a awesome project.
Thank you! Check out where we are with it now!!
Amazing Job guys God Bless you
Thank you! And thanks for watching and following!! God bless you too!!
8:17 That's so cool.
Thank you!!
Beautiful car!
Superb 👌🏻 team
Thank you so much!! We are taking it to the dyno next week. Stay tuned....
The crazy part is almost any glass shop would buy the windshield and other glass
Man that old Ford is soooo cool!
I put a rocket motor in my Mustang last spring, and the chicks really dig me.
LOL!!
Had a 49 2d coupe, and a 50 2d sedan. Always one of my favorite cars. I love what I see, so far...
Thank you! That means a lot from a Shoebox connoisseur.
We really appreciate them in stock form, resto mod or full custom. We just wanted to build something really crazy and controversial.
We are really happy with it. Thanks for watching!!
BTW, this started out as a 2D sedan and was chopped by some old timers 20 years ago. They shortened the nbidy about 7" so they didn't need to quarter the roof. First time I ever saw a chop done that way. We did end up finishing the chop after we got it. We have over 80 episodes covering the whole build.
Thing looks so nice!
Thank you!!
Dope video brotha!
Thanks!! Glad you enjoyed it.
Nice
Most excellent.
Thank you!!
This is the best wath you can do with an BMW .....Make a bad ass FORD ....Gredings form Bavaria.....👍👍👍👍👍
Hahaha! Thanks! Welcome Bavaria!!
Love it
Thanks!!
Nice Job Bruce Willis!
😎👊
That is awesome
👍
Perfect!!!
Thanks!! We are taking it to the dyno next week. Stay tuned for some results.
Who knew Bruce Willis was into body swaps, cool.
Beautifull machine.
Thank you!!
Looks amzing both types or Wheels
Thanks!!
Wow going to be OÑÈ sick beast
Was cool tell you put those wheels and tires on it.
Thanks Eric! We love the black wheels. Hostile is now offering this wheel in a cast version and it's called the "Maniac".
It was great meeting you at SEMA this year. Very cool car
Sorry for the slow response. It was great meeting you as well!
this is amaizing, cool progect=)
Thank you!! Nice drifting in the E30!!
I wanna put classic mini panels on a mini r50 front. That way it Will actually look like a mini. Scaling up some bits to help the bonnet fit.
Sounds cool!!
Well done boys !! Anyone can body swap , I'm glad to see people going the extra mile to finish it all the way !! You have no idea how many body swaps I've seen and then had to finish or even redo , because it was hurried or wasn't finished . Good job !
Thank you very much!! The vast majority of the work was not the actual body swap but all the additional little things. Thanks again!
@@ManiacsGarage That's exactly what I mean . It's all those little pain in the ass things that finalize the project . Keep up the fun projects !!
Nice 👍
Thank you!
Muito top essa máquina!!!
Es admirable el trabajo que realizán, porque arriesgar todo por alguien que miente.
I’ve got a 75 hilux I want to put on a Miata chassis. Thanks for the inspiration!
That's awesome!! We've seen a few miata swaps but not with a Hilux!!
cool build.
Thank you!!!
That car is cool as hell& I love the wheels
Thanks!!
I guess you could say, "I would weld a mile to build the Born 49ain" Great videos & please keep them coming.
That's good! Thanks for following!
This dude really looks like Bruce Willis. Love the video 👍🏽
Right on!!
Nice job sir 👍❤️❤️❤️
Thank you!!
This roof chop on this 49 ford literally looks like the Hotwheels Shoebox
Awesome I would buy it 👍
Thanks!
I've always considered the 49 - 51 Ford ugly but this top chop has turned into a mighty fine beauty!
Thanks for your comment and for watching, please subscribe if you haven't already!
The '49 was Ford stepping out of all its previous models. This was true for all of Detroit. Like it or not, 1949 was the first year of the '50's look. I'm 70+ years old and I remember all the 49 Fords being hopped-up by the young generation. In the early '60s, young guys were still using these 49-51's and swapping in small-block Chevy engines. My father ran a garage back then and did a 327 conversion for a local teen.
@@robj2704 I'm 75 myself and I've built several drag race-inspired custom cars. As I said, I never liked the looks of the 49 - 51 Ford and the fact that they produced that shape for only 3 years probably tells a similar story. Anyway, this video project is excellent.
This car is cool
Thank you!
I'm just glad you didn't Tesla the thing. Keep up the good work.
Hahaha! Thanks!!
Shoebox is one of my dream cars but you lost me with the whole BMW thing lol. It’s still very cool and appreciative to what you guys did for a classic
Thanks!!
@@ManiacsGarage if you ever do an MG with a Lexus V8 just remember it was my idea “wink wink”
That will do! 😋
Thank you! We got it done, make sure to check out the more recent videos.
Nice work guys. Great swap!
Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying it! We have lots of plans for it and God willing we will have a lot of fun in the near future with it. We already are. lol
Thats enthusiastic realism ‼️😉
I love to work on ambassador in india
Thanks 😊🙏
Thank you!!
That is some awesome work you guys are doing 👍, you just reminded me of what I wanted to do some years back , to do a body swap a 95 f150 short bed on top of a 2005 Mercedes s65 Amg , maybe some day
That’s still on my bucket list 🤣
Wishing you guys the best from southern cali 😎
Thanks for the comment and keep your dream alive!
I've wanted to do body swaps on many different cars especially putting on something really reliable like a Toyota or Honda
Yeah, that's a great idea Ivan! There is a cool 50 Chevy sedan dropped onto a Lexus 400.
BTW, the car will be featured on a show on A&E called Crazy Customs and will air on Thursday October 14th at 10pm EST. Please tune in if you can.
@@ManiacsGarage I seen that on Hooligan, I think this will become a big thing in the future
How r u safely putting a body on a non frame car? I see this over and over again, even with welded in supports its not safe. Sorry but true.
Car looking great already but I think the wheels should be push in a little bit other than that great looking car great job guys
Thank you!! Will probably redo the fenders at some point. Stay tuned, we are talking it to the dyno next week.
Aaaand of course; the rebodied BMW does not have blinker indicators.
*You guys have learned the lesson.*
It will,... because we're breaking that mold! 🤣🤣
That shit is Phatt! Widebody. Silver bullet or Pitch Black. Love the build
Thanks 👊
wish the wheels were properly tucked, otherwise one of the coolest projects i've seen lately
ive always wondered about a project like this. cool to know its possible if you plan it out right. my dream is to put an older muscle car body on a modern muscle car chassis. keep it looking original but with some good suspension parts and creature comforts on the inside + a solid engine.
If you want it to be special go for an off model. Like with dodge a Cornet or a GSX. Chevy a Cheetah is a real car or a Corvair, which is already set up for a mid-engine Or a Mercury Cougar which is a rebadged Mustang. And keep Chevy engines out of something that isn't a Chevy
Thanks for commenting and watching our video. Please check out all the other stuff we have on the channel. We are also in the works on some other project that are cool.
great job but 8 months dayummm
subbed 😁
👊
Now some will think of this as disrespectful, but all you need to do is fit the M57 diesel.
I think the diesel would have been cool, but remember we built this on a pretty tight budget and this car came our way from a friend of our who crashed it,
Check our Next video when we do the LS swap
how many person said that you looks like Bruce Willis....Dude?😁
Many!! :-)
Hi, I've been watching this build over and over for years. I don't remember seeing how you did the hood hinges, and I'm currently struggling with hinges on a 51 plymouth to toyota camry swap. Would you mind sharing what you did?
we used hinges that were supposed to be for the trunk. Thanks for watching!
if you do this in Spain: PERPETUAL JAIL
Bruce Willis , is that you ? OMG 😨😨😨
Awesome car :)
Thanks!!
Love it now drift it
The Hudson hornet looking kinda different these days
Thanks for the inspirational video. I actually plan to swab the body of my Simca Versailles 1957 to the Volvo 940. The wheelbase is important but from the video, I notice that It is also important to ensure the distance from pillar A to the rear axle of both cars prior to joining the body shell. Am I right?
We're glad we've inspired you! Yes, those dimensions are important. Best of luck!!
Is such a car (coolest thing I have seen in a long time by the way) roadworthy at all in the US? Here in Europe, at least in most countries on the old continent, there is no way they would let this out into the traffic.
Yessir it's not a problem in North America. The VIN is a BMW so it's just a BMW nothing more nothing less.
In some areas you have to get a mechanic to say that the brakes, suspension etc is good every year or just when the vehicle changes hands, and some places not even that.
Nice, a little heavy i would guess, but hey, the bigger turbo will get it done.
Surprisingly the same weight as the original Bimmer (3400 lbs)
How can you not love these guys? 💪🏾💙
He showed us a ball ballpeen hammer and said they probably don’t make them like this anymore. News Flash, they still make them everyday lol.
It was a joke. LOL Thanks for watching
1:53-1:57 Geez, looks like something laid eggs in this car
I love builds but, however, I think I wouldn't used a BMW. Maybe cut up a Marauder or crown vic or Grand Marque to use as a donor. Pluck a damn foreign car.! Scrap the idea, tube it out and convert it to a Coyote and T 56 magnum, curry 9"......
We appreciate the comment! But every one of those that you mentioned have been done.
We wanted to create something unique and a bit crazy! Thanks for watching!!
I respect that you want it to look factory, which is obviously going to hugely increase the hours necessary to achieve that!
Nice, very interesting project that's more involved than might be first imagined.
You've saved both cars and it'll presumably stay registered as a BMW as it will still have the original engine and chassis vin.
I subscribed to see your progress.
Thanks for your commnet and we appreciate you checking out our video!!
Great idear mines a e36 with a v.w square body
Wow! That's cool. There is a guy that dropped VW Squarebody on a Miata. You should DM some pics to our InstaGram page @maniacsgaragebuilds
A Found On the Road Dead was mated to a Broken Motor Works cars. which will have electrical gremlins all its life.
Hahaha, good one!! Fortunately it's not our daily grocery getter.
🔥💕👍
Hi. What is the 3d program in the beginning?
I thought i saw Bruce Willis when the guy said: it’s getting serious now
LOL
Subscribed 👍🏻.....burning question is can you register this in Arizona after the swap? I have my Camry sitting in my garage, I want to do something like this.
Thanks for the SUB!! It's already registered as a 49 Ford. It had a clear title and the vin transferred with the body swap. It's really not much different than an old car with an engine swap, just this one also has the suspension swapped and the AC and the heater. lol
Really nice but what's with the wide tires ?
Check out the newest videos. But keep in mind that the car was built to create a stir and grab attention. Thanks for watching!!
The rollers looked better than the custom wheels. 🧐
The rollers were pretty cool but they were trashed form when the BMW was salvaged. Besides, they needed to be about twice as wide for the mods we planned. The wheels we decided on, as controversial as they are, were custom built for this car. They are a one off forged set that are now being offered in a cast version (..and they are called the "Hostile Maniacs"). You can check them out at www.hostilewheels.com
You guys are gonna be pulled over left and right when cops run your plates and comes back 2003 bmw instead of 49 ford big differences lol looks awsome though glad to seeing something outside the box
The plate matches the 49 VIN. As far as the law is concerned it has a BMW engine in it. Engine swaps are legal in most states, including AZ, where we are. In fact we don't even need to smog cars in our area (yet LOL). But a 49 you donlt have to smog anyway. Thanks for watching!!
