  • Unveiling the True Impact of Blame on Organizational Culture
What do you think happens when blame is permitted in a workplace? Imagine the following scenario: a new, enthusiastic employee takes initiative, eager to contribute. But when things don’t turn out the way the boss wants it, they're met with blame, criticism, and negativity. Consequently, the new employee’s enthusiasm wanes, and they withdraw from taking any initiative, fearing further blame. Sound familiar?
Blame triggers the fight or flight response which shuts down our prefrontal cortex, the problem-solving part of the brain. This is ironic because blaming people for problems stifles the very brain function necessary to solve those problems.
In addition to suppressing problem-solving, blame impedes accountable behaviors and extinguishes collaboration. Blame only makes a bad situation worse.
So, the next time you’re tempted to blame someone for a problem, consider a different approach. Instead of asking, "Who did this?, ask, "Where did the process break down?”
