"Mephisto" Wins Foreign Language Film: 1982 Oscars

- Ornella Muti and Jack Valenti present the Oscar for Foreign Language Film to Hungary for Mephisto at the 54th Academy Awards. Accepted by director István Szabó, accompanied on stage by actor Klaus Maria Brandauer, and hosted by Johnny Carson.

What an amazing moment. Klaus Maria Brandauer should have been nominated for Best Actor. (He was nominated earlier for Best Supporting Actor in Out of Africa (Baron Bror Blixen).
One of the rare moments when you truly proud to be Hungarian. And of course, it was only one of the gems created by him, Colonel Redl was also a masterpiece but nothing can beat Sunshine.
Itt is a sad sentence. My life would be a bit of rootless nightmare if i could not be proud in every moment of the county and nation to where I was born.
Sehr verdient gewonnen. Ein fantastischer Film, mit einem großartigen Hauptdarsteller.

Szabó István Mephisto című filmjének Oscar-díjazása teljesen megérdemelt győzelem volt 1982. március 29-én, 81 évvel az első magyar film (A tánc - 1901) és 51 évvel az első - két - magyar hangosfilm (A kék bálvány - 1931, Hyppolit a lakáj - 1931 (a magyar filmtörténet ez utóbbit tekinti az elsőnek, holott az előbbi készült hamarabb, de az bukás volt, ezért leírták)) elkészülte és bemutatója után, ami azt bizonyítja, hogy a magyarok mégis csak érnek és számítanak valamit: tehetségesek és elismerésre méltóak. Bár magyar származású Oscar-díjasok többen is vannak (az első ilyen díjazás már a '30-as évek elején megtörtént), maga az első tisztán magyar Oscar-díj - a Mephisto Oscar-díjához képest - egy évvel korábban (1981-ben) született, a Rófusz Ferenc rendezte A légy (The fly) című animációs rövidfilm révén, ami filmalkotás évekig készült és mégis csak pár perc hosszúságú. Ha megnézzük - az összesen három kategóriában - mind a négy, tisztán magyar Oscar-díjas filmet (új belépők: Nemes Jeles László: Saul fia (Son of Saul) - 2016, Deák Kristóf (rendező) és Udvardy Anna (producer): Mindenki (Sing) - 2017), akkor láthatjuk, hogy mind a négy film egy közös tengelyen mozog: mind a négy film egyén és hatalom viszonyát és kapcsolatát vizsgálja és mutatja be különböző szempontok, korok és történetek, sőt, technikák szerint. PS: Olyan jó lett volna, ha tavaly, a 90. Oscar-gálán megszületik az ötödik magyar Oscar-díj (Enyedi Ildikó filmje, a Testről és lélekről (On body and soul) révén), de ez a sors szeszélye és az akadémia szavazóinak akarata révén másképp' alakult...

I disagree that the whole trilogy should've won Oscars. "Mephisto" was a masterpiece, "Colonel Redl" had some brilliant moments but, in the end, was a inferior to the first part. And "Hanussen" was a failure, IMHO. Szabo went downhill after "Redl", unfortunately.

No offense Istvan szabo, but DAS BOOT was the far SUPERIOR movie. However this is a great movie in its own right.
they were not nominated in the same year, i think that has something to do with the release date in the states, das boot was nominated in 83, though both are from 81
