- John Gavin and Jack Valenti presenting the Oscar for Foreign Language Film to Sweden for Fanny & Alexander at the 56th Academy Awards. Hosted by Johnny Carson and accepted by producer Jorn Donner and Ingrid von Rosen, wife of director Ingmar Bergman.
One of the greatest films ever made. The best by Bergman, with a magical quality..
My number one of all time. A master's masterpiece.
Jörn Donner, the producer accepting the award has died today at 86. The only Finnish Oscar winner. Rest in peace.
Yet!
Best movie to ever win in this category, but more deserving of Best Picture than any nominee that year.
yes but then again the oscars are a joke so who cares
8 1/2?
@@brandocervera3854 Don't be too idiot. You watched this video, then said "who care about the Oscar." WTF?
Although I can’t imagine opting to watch the theatrical cut nowadays when you can easily get ahold of the FAR superior full length television miniseries.
And win best picture
impeccably deserving of this award, "Fanny & Alexander" should have been recognized in the Best Picture category as well. Foreign language films have been nominated and this one should have been one of them
In order to be nominated for Best Picture, a film has to comply with the Academy's rules governing release of said film within Los Angeles within a specific time period. This film did not qualify.
RAHbert503 Fanny and Alexander did qualify for Best Picture as far as exhibition requirements are concerned; otherwise, it would not have earned the nominations and wins it did. You are right, however, that it was not eligible for Best Picture. During this period, foreign language films submitted for Best Foreign Film were ineligible for Best Picture nominations.
Holy shit did your comment age like wine.
"Parasite is the best foreign film ever made!"
F&A: Hold my Beer.
I really, really, really want to see F&A. But I kind of want to start with Bergman’s earlier works first.
@@mackielunkey2205 That's definitely a good idea. I recommend starting off with Wild Strawberries.
8 1/2: hold my beer
@@carlramos9445 8 1/2 is my favorite film ever made. It’s so fucking good.
Who said Parasite is the best foregin language movie? Life is beautiful, Seven Samurai, City of God say hi.
Fanny and Alexander is one of the best three movies of all time imo
I`m sorry if this is a stupid question, but why is everyone referring to this as a movie? Isn't it a mini series which was just later got a cut as a film?
@@bastilohh The original draft was quite long (over 300 minutes), so it was first cut and released as a 188-minute film, and only later was the full draft separated into episodes and shown in Sweden as a miniseries. For many years the film cut was the only way to watch it in America, and so that is all many people know.
@@haywoco2 And now you can buy the miniseries cut! Heard all about it.
Maybe the tv version yes
Every line of dialogue in this movie can go through your bowels and burn them
One of the 10 best films ever. Bergman is a master
one of the best movies ever made
One of my favorite Swedish movies
This movie is wonderful
One of my favorite Swedish films ever!
RIP Ingmar Bergman (July 14, 1918 - July 30, 2007), aged 89
You will be remembered as a legend.
Bergman is the Man!
This year should've called the year of Bergman
And the winner is...Sweden! Well done, Sweden.
Nice to know Ingmar Bergman is an Oscar winner.
I remember seeing the TV version of Fanny and Alexander in film school; for as long as it was, it still is an impressive film...
It should have been nominated for best picture that year as well
But it wasn’t as common then as it is now
R.I.P. Jörn Donner.
of all American people, only 2 have seen Fanny and Alexander
Go Sweden
Bergman is the king in Movie History.
bergman desrvers.. his movies was wonderful its not about a family its about something touch all of us love Cruelty questions about Existentialism..etc
Jörn Donner 1933-2020.
RIP Jörn Donner
Ingmar Bergman N1
John Gavin looks still hot and handsome in his 50s as well!
"Thank you the academy for having such good taste". We the swedes are not famous for being so cocky😄
Jörn Donner was Finnish, though ;)
Jörn Donner is from Finland.
The man who was almost Bond. John Gavin was cast in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, until Connery decided to return. Gavin did receive his full salary however.
'Jörkka' did pretty much ok, given that this was the only Finnish touch of AA ever.
Carmen is a masterpiece
I'm proud to be swedish!
Are ordinary, not cinephile, Swedish people aware of Bergman and his greatness?
You’re proud for someone else’s accomplishment? Wow okay
I wish Job's Revolt had won. So heartbreaking. I'm biased, though, because I'm Hungarian.
John Gavin was a hunk!
Best of Bergman
I hope Sweden wins again
It was the year of the Los Angeles Games.

3:40 That black book of yours wouldn't happen to have the names Black & Dekker by any chance would it? ...Oh, no reason, I only ask because that janitor in the background seems to have something to add.
How was ‘Sugar Cane Alley’ not even nominated?
Me too! :)
No one believe that I was Alexander at eight+ in 1968.
parhaat elokuvat tehdään muuten nykyään suomessa, ja ruotsissa on sitten bergman tietysti
tavallinen jörn donner ...
Vittu se on viilee äijä! Cool cat!

Це достойний фільм.
Perkele!
Actually it was not about the complications of family life; it was about toxic religiosity...and it's destructive role in family life too.
I am not an atheist, and I find this film to be a very brave move on the role of religion when it goes against what we today seem to have forgotten the value of: The Human Rights Declaration. Yes, therein one is given the right to religious practice - but what when the religious practice violates the rest of the Human Rights mentioned in the same document?
We are allowed to express our justifiable concerns today - but JUST where it comes to two religions; Judaism (very much so criticised ao in the UN), and Christianity.
About time this RIGHT to put a critical light is extended to all religions, and their practices where they infringe national jurisprudence and legislation.
Jörn Donner in not a swedish, he is a finnish.
+Rauno Etelävuori Ethnically he is Swedish.
+Ze8us Ethnically? Jörn Donner was born 3.2.1933 in Helsinki. Finland.
So? Are you implying a dog born in a stable is a horse?
+Ze8us Heh.. very funny...
+Ze8us Jörn Johan Donner (born 5 February 1933, Helsinki, Finland) is a Finnish writer, film director, actor, producer, politician, founder of Finnish Film Archive and a member of the Donner family. He is the son of the linguist Kai Donner.
Too bad that neither Jarl Kulle or Jan Malmsjö were nominated for the best actor award.
The producers....
Saiko Jörn itselleen mitään Oscar patsasta?
Sai pitää tuon hakemansa kun se ei Bergmania kiinnostanut.

This guy must be drunk! ;D
Nah, that's just how "Jörkka" rolls.
He´s ironic.
Maksapihvi That's true, typical Jörn Donner!
He just speaks typical rally English - so classy
He drank everyday. Drink of that day was whiskey.

Jörn Donner was drunk as a skunk.
In that case, he has been drunk every time I saw him on (Swedish) television, since the early 1970s.
@@herrbonk3635 He has said that he drank everyday. That day he was lifting the spirits with whiskey.
The fuck he was.

Damn, this was a really outstanding drama, a real movie, not that today's sjw pseudo-social oscar-winning garbage.
Can we appreciate the movie without adding things that have nothing to do with it like politics?
It's not like amazing films aren't made today.
