No Apology from Texas Elementary School Over Blackface Accusation

  • How could a 5th-grader end up being accused of accidental blackface? And how could the school recklessly throwing around that accusation refuse to apologize? Today’s guests are currently on a crusade to answer those questions. This incident touches on crucial issues our society currently faces, especially in our schools. When adults fail to be more mature and measured than the children in their care, inflating honest mistakes into serious accusations of bigotry, they elevate their sensitivities above those of the children and risk causing serious psychological harm. Furthermore, they model a censorious, chastising social dynamic as the ethical norm for those kids and further encourage the excesses of cancel culture, which already dominate our discourse.

I don't see any problem with kids painting themselves black as long as they aren't making fun of black people. It's ridiculous to turn this into a big issue.

My son is 1/4 black. He was given a hard time very often and whenever I went to talk to teachers at conference time they all just talked about how much they liked him when in fact I picked him up in tears before. I quit going to conferences at that point because the teachers were liars. They themselves cause parents to go against them.

It's a tough argument since there was an obvious stain in global history where Black people were slaves. However, there is evidence that Blacks owned slaves and sold them as well. White Irish people and the Chinese were slaves as well, though that is not discussed. Why? Because it didn't have an advantage to gain votes.

I'm only like 8.5min in rn, but my first thought at this point is- why would anyone come after this girl? Why would the schoolboard not just say "this could be an issue, we need to adjust the dress code to not allow face paint at school during school hours or extracurricular hours or on school grounds at all, with the single exception of pre-approved makeup colors and design applications for the exclusive purpose of theatrical productions arranged by the school and only to be worn during the final dress rehearsal and the actual performances themselves and will be necessarily removed immediately after final bows are taken."
That seems like the obvious solution to me. That was the rule at every school I ever attended- they didn't allow colored hair or wallet chains or decorative belt buckles, or pants around knees with boxers hanging out, or spaghetti straps - 3 finger rule was the most lenient I ever had in school and skirts that don't reach below fingertips which was applicable both to my private and public school experiences...kinda not sure why school dress codes would've changed so significantly in such a short amount of time? Or they just let kids get away w breaking dress code on field day and then select one child at random to punish to...idk I guess make an example of them? So kids will follow the dress code for the rest of the school year, which is silly bc field day usually comes toward the end of the year or at least end if a semester so that's a terrible time to make an example of someone when by the time the kids come back to school they've all forgotten the incident...except maybe that 1 traumatized kid...lol just doesn't make any sense

Blackface was not uncommon even through the 1940s. But that was 80 years ago. 80 years of change. People find it difficult to let go of their victimhood; it's like an annoying but reliable member of the family.

By going through the grievance process and being public about the outcome, these parents -- this family -- has made the world a better place. There was of course no way they were going to get school district adults to apologize to a child, privately or otherwise. Litigation fears aside, doing so would have represented to most observers, the kids in their charge especially, a real diminishment of their authority as school leaders, i.e. ostensibly knowledgeable, even wise guides for children, and a huge blow to their egos. Especially in TX where everything's a competition -- the fact of your apologizing means you lost and you even admitted you're the loser, you're the one who 'got taught'; you 'found out'. But this would be so anywhere -- it's how pop culture and the general culture operate now.
But by going through the process these parents have taught every SD teacher, administrator, and board member with even an ounce of integrity to look at their own behavior more carefully and, where needed, to strive for greater thoughtfulness and fairness in their treatment of others, students especially. It's important that this was filmed and put out in the world.
I really liked the mother's final words about appreciating that children are children, i.e. essentially quite innocent. Also liked the observation about adults needing to be less insecure and ego-driven so as to be better leaders.
    Great documentary.

When my son was still in middle school he had a tech class. They had an assignment where they needed to take a selfie and upload it on to some computer or something. He took a photo of himself making the “ok” sign with his hand. He was brought to the office and the school called me and asked what he meant by the hand gesture. I said, “ok I guess”? Turned out some people think that hand gesture means “whites only”. They kept him out the whole class that day talking to him about it. The really dumb thing is he is 1/2 Hispanic. I was super pissed.

When I was about 7 years old my mom asked me if I wanted to go the store with her. Usually I loved going but that day I said no, I wanted to finish reading my book. After she left I burst into tears, worried I’d hurt her feelings. When she got home, I was still crying and I told her why. She said “oh sweetheart! Children are not responsible for the feelings of adults. Especially if you didn’t mean to be hurtful.” So many teachers need to learn this lesson - children are not responsible for the feelings of grown ups! Sure, they shouldn’t be intentionally rude, but it’s not up to kids to make adults happy, or walk on eggshells for fear of hurting an adult’s feelings. Sorry for the long comment. ❤😊

Here in the UK back in 2012 I was told by a fellow passenger into London from a suburb town that his 5 year old daughter had been reprimanded at school and he had been called to the school for a meeting. His daughter had finished her work of colouring in with coloured pencils and put her hand up and said “please Miss I have finished the page, it is all coloured in”. The teacher and the head said to the father that his daughter was racist because his 5 year old daughter had used the word “coloured”. American spelling “colored” I think? At that time I had difficulty accepting that the teachers could have made such an error and poor decision. But now as I realise the mass formation by so many people within so many topics I can accept what this fellow traveller was telling me.

There are so many terms I do not understand in the USA even after living here 23yrs, here’s one again’Blackface’ ??????
The references appear now and again including ‘Woke’, which apparently had its meaning totally changed around 2016, I woke this morning to a sunny day !!!
Of course there are many more examples…I’ve found I only need four words to communicate in the USA … Awesome…Really…Good and Cute.
The word Good particularly generates a great vision, I worked in a gas station for a time, when you asked customer how they were they usually replied “good”.
Each time they answered in that way I imagined someone coming into the gas station even if their leg was hanging off they would answer GOOD!
When the customer asked me how I was I usually answered “I’m very well thank you, and how are you?”
You could see the blood drain from their face when they had to find more words other than just GOOD.
