  • Former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy sits down to discuss the importance of engaging with opposing views, the state of American political discourse, and the impact of identity politics. Growing up as the “odd man out” in most rooms he entered, he quickly learned the value of having your views challenged. Vivek shares stories from his upbringing, his perspective on how true diversity drives productive debate, and how his role as a father inspires his public life.

    Hello friends, and families... In the name of keeping you all on your toes, we're following up my conversation with Bill de Blasio with his political polar opposite, Vivek Ramaswamy. This conversation, like our last, is part of a broader project on debate in America that's still in oven. I didn't have as much time as I would like to do my usual long-form (long-winded?) exploration, but have at it!

    What is this “Overton window” but a new way of saying thinking outside the box/square?

    • @Belzediel
      @Belzediel Před 18 dny +1

      Well, the difference would be that the Overton Window describes the range of acceptable ideas to an entire governed public, whereas in-the-box describes linear rhetoric and out-of-box describes non-linear. It's not the same thing - you can have a non-linear approach to a subject within the Overton Window or outside it.
      For example, we're at a disadvantage to the French. A non-linear out-of-box solution to improving relations with France might be to, instead of being nice to the French one were to antagonise someone the French dislike more than they dislike you, expecting that this would reciprocate relations. A non-Overton solution to the same problem might be genociding the French so there's no longer an issue. The former is non-linear but politically acceptable, the other is very linear but politically unacceptable.
      That work for ya?

    • @robertholland7558
      @robertholland7558 Před 18 dny

      @@Belzediel nope. Scratches my head in total confusion. Must be the box window 🪟

    • @Belzediel
      @Belzediel Před 18 dny

      @@robertholland7558 ..OK, then, maybe this isn't an area you need to be spending your resources...
      But, OK, let's give it another go. The box is about how you solve problems. Let us say that the problem is that some of the staff at work are complaining that the office is too cold.
      Now, the problem is the complaints, right, you don't care, your office is air conditioned to your preferences, but you don't like your workforce complaining.
      The linear, direct, simple solution to this problem is to turn the heating up until they stop complaining. Right? It's direct, it's expected, it's uncomplicated, it is IN THE BOX.
      But if we instead decide to come in after work and change the numbers on the heating dial so it merely looks like the thermostat is set higher, we might well see a reduction in the number of complaints because a number of people are going to believe that you have turned up the heat. The same solution - reduction in complaints, but you have found a non-linear solution, you have gone OUT OF THE BOX.
      OK? The box is whether or not your solution is direct or oblique. Straight or sneaky, perhaps.
      It was, once, acceptable for teachers to cane their pupils as a disciplinary option. That was perfectly acceptable as a stand point. Then, it became fringe, then unpopular, then wrong, and now, it would be a joke to raise it as something to consider in schools. It used to be within the Overton Window, and now it is outside.
      Suggesting the return of caning would not be thinking outside the box because hitting kids with sticks when they do things you don't like is about as simple as it gets, but it would be thinking outside the window.
      The Window is what the public consider to be reasonable subject, the Box is about how you approach a problem. The only thing they have in common at all, is both feature something square to be either within or without.
      If we instead called it thinking outside of the glass and the Overton Underpants it might be clearer
      Hopefully you'll have twigged,. but if not, I don't know what to say except, if these concepts are not distinguishable to you, perhaps politics isn't your bailiwick.

    Diversity is another redefined weasel word. What it means is every business must hire a diversity officer, who tells the company who they must hire in specific departments and what they must pay them….regardless of whether they are qualified. Those DEI’s then proceed to multiply in the company, making more and more decisions for the company. DEI’s implant a government democrat WOKE ‘microchip’/vision on what direction the company will go in, including what products or services it will produce…think Disney. The company is now a Democrat WOKE government entity. All media companies are run by government implant DEI’s. DEI’s do not go into the company as secretaries….they start as the Trojan horses that fill the companies with government workers. They are poison to any business or government.
