    Manon: "that's not cheap" (while sat on a £10k bike) 😂

    • @itainteasy
      @itainteasy Pƙed 2 lety +12

      If you ride the scooter 5 miles every day, a 10k bike is covered in 2.7 years. Totally worth it for an every day rider... But the real kicker is a comparable scooter to what the ride shares provide would only cost you 600-800 dollars, that's covered after 80 rides.

    • @24pavlo
      @24pavlo Pƙed 2 lety +3

      @@itainteasy They also offer monthly subscription for ÂŁ40. So the bike would be covered in 20 years as long as you don't need to maintain it.

    • @itainteasy
      @itainteasy Pƙed 2 lety +5

      @@24pavlo that's kinda backwards, but you could own a scooter in a year that doesn't shut down when you turn a corner into a safety zone. In the US they even offer a service where you get to keep and charge the scooter at home for a slightly smaller fee, but they still have the no parking/no riding GPS. they make it seem like you can leave it just anywhere, but then you realize there are entire neighborhoods that won't let you leave the scooter at all... it's electronically blocked and you will receive a hefty fee for abandoning the scooter there, after you already rode into them. Sure owning your own scooter is pretty lame feeling, I don't feel this way about a bike... but the economics and true easy of use is in favor of owning one.

    • @itainteasy
      @itainteasy Pƙed 2 lety +1

      @@JoshuaRPearce_ I believe you are correct, but it's not a prohibition on electric motor vehicles, you simply need pedals, so everything from pedal assist to super73's & Honda U Be's are allowed (probably some bike paths say no e-bikes). There are e-bikes like the u be that are comparable in price, but probably not in stock in the US or UK. Does seem backwards, I drive a car in Los Angeles, it's clear what scooters are privately owned, and who is riding for hire, and it's the ones for hire who I worry about causing accidents following pedestrian cross walks, those who have unmarked scooters all seem to be aware they follow traffic laws like a bike. Although they are following traffic laws they look like lame grown up razor scooter kids compared to a super73, or even a pedal assist bike rented from the city.

      A bike has no chance to beat an e-scooter in everyday use:
      -No sweat. E-scooter is actually the most comfortable thing other than a car in really hot weather!
      -No uncomfortable position, more relaxing, no impotence problems
      -You can pop it in your car boot easily, unlike a bike (I'm talking about bought e-scooters, not rented). It's a fantastic companion for a car, really handy!
      -You can take it anywhere, through shops and malls and easier to take through walking-only zones, don't have to leave it locked if you don't want to
      -No need spend time and go through the hassle of putting your bike in storage or get it out of there every time. Just take it inside.

    I appreciate the following is a specific personal response of a Bath resident and in a convoluted way supports cycling

    Although the concept of this video is very good and something I’ve considered it’s slightly flawed (I’m Bath anyway!). That’s because the actual quandary most face is not, “shall I take my scooter or bike sightseeing in a world heritage site?”, but in fact “how can I get from my home to point B without turning up hot and sweaty”. Taking the latter, with the majority in Bath don’t live in the E-scooter area so unless they’re an avid, all weather cyclist will probably just drive.
    It would be interesting to see this video redone in Bristol as their E scooter area is much larger and could be a “day of chores/commute” instead.
    The worst/most dangerous place in Bath to ride the scooters is along the top of Victoria park as it picks up the “slow zone” of the inner park. Cars don’t appreciate it when the scooter in front of then suddenly slows down to 10kph 🙈

      I think this is a key benefit of the scooter and bike rentals, security of the bike becomes a non-issue. Especially when combined with other forms of public transport, trains buses etc. it would’ve been interesting to compare the energy used as well. Clearly Hank had to run a bit but the rest of the time he wasn’t expending a lot. And for arriving at work not needing a shower etc can be important too.

      Yeah I got a proper Micro scooter which are a million times better than those rental ones. It's made by a European company too, not Chinese. When you use them often proper scooters are cheaper than rentals. No restrictions either. Far better to ride than rentals.
      E-scooters absolutely murder bicycles in practicality: even in the summer and with hills there's no sweat, a million times more comfortable, as you said no need to go get a bike from a bike storage or alternatively carrying an e-scooter is easy. I do have to lock my e-scooter but I live in a country and town where I actually feel safe enough to not even lock it most of the time.
      And what's really great is I can just pop it in my car and take it anywhere! I've even managed to make my runs far better by dropping off the scooter at the end of my running route, drive on to the start of my running route, then after running I just scoot back to my car. That way I don't always have to do loops or back-and-forth-routes and am far more flexible.
      I took my scooter to Italy on holiday this summer and it was the perfect way to cover ground in the heat and long walking distances, especially when I could so often only get parking miles from the destination.

    5km cost £10 on the scooter, that’s extortionate, they may be the future, allegedly, but your bank account will be in the past.
    Great video though.

      Scooters are way cheaper than bikes though, well they are illegal in england but here in Germany you can get a pretty decent one for< 300€

    Nice to see Hank have fun in a ride. The bike was going to win all the way, but scooter looks pretty fun. I would stick with a bike.

    Weird premise... Hank's on a tourist-friendly accessible rental, intended for urban use, etc. Manon should be on a bikeshare bike if we're comparing like for like, but I don't think the point of an e-scooter OR a bikeshare rental was ever to get across town as fast as possible.
