  • A few (possibly unpopular) thoughts on the benefits of having a good saw and how useful they are for carving.
In my mind there are really two flavours of saw - Green wood saws and seasoned wood saws.

Good video Ham. It's getting to be a good series.
Which is more important, the axe or the saw? My reply is "yes". It just depends on which task you're doing at the moment. lol

Excellent video. Once again, thank you for the tips. First I've seen of the Japanese saw as I only work with dry/seasoned wood. Do you have a link for one you suggest?

Dimitri Vos not that I know of as it’s a safety thing but it wouldn’t be too difficult to remove if you really wanted to.

As far as I can tell it has two purposes. Firstly as it’s a longer saw it’s a safety tip to stop you accidentally stabbing yourselves and secondly it’s to help keep the blade in the cut (kerf). You have to remember these saws are designed for people working whilst on ladders or roped into trees where the blade sliding out would be a problem.

Grab some free wood from a forest, buy a Bacho no23 blade for ten quid and make you own frame saw. Cheap, very efficient, pack down and utilises bushcraft skills..
