- The pushblock was used because it allowed me to pivot the piece into the blade to create the kickback while pulling my hand away from the blade. We tested several other handle types and all pulled my hand towards the blade when the kickback happened.

I understand this is a demo of kickback, but that was still very close to a real accident.
I have been showing your video to my woodworking classes for the past couple of years, I commend you for being humble enough to post it, and to admit that you were crazy in attempting this kickback. What a great learning tool your video is, my students are 100% engaged when we show this. It sure makes teaching the physics of pushing stock into rotating cutting heads! I watched my buddy cut his middle finger off on the band saw. That was a mess of blood and the bone looks pretty cool tbh.
Shoot, theres a website that compiles table saw injuries. It has a separate section with pictures.
I'm not a squeamish person, like at all. But as a wood worker and having a relative with no thumb tips it was a bit close to home. I could only take 5mins and was a little hesitant to make sawdust even after my new Freud Fusion blade came in the mail.
I think it'd be a good learning aid, it seemed like the vast majority would easily have been prevented by observing basic safety and/or from saws lacking a riving knife.
A little mistake and 1/100th of a second can cause (hundreds of) thousands in hospital bills, surgeries, months of recovery and if you're lucky, a debilitating scar. Usually severe loss in functionality in your hand.

I showed this video to my dad, who never put the guard or knife on his saw.
He IMMEDIATELY went outside and installed the guards on all of his tools.

Yeah, good idea to reinstall the riving knife on your table saw.
In fact here in Europe it's present on every table was I have come across so far and I don't think it would be that easy to remove.
I also don't get how it could become annoying enough for one to want to remove it in the first place.

I teach woodshop and I have started showing this video. Real enough to keep the students VERY engaged, but not too graphic! I am glad you did not get hurt, but I am also glad you realize how stupid it was to do this experiment! Thank you for posting so we can learn from your near-terrible mistake!
You may call yourself an idiot, but you're a hero because imagine how many people are (hopefully) learning from this so they are careful not to replicate a similar situation
I recently got myself some power tools so i can start woodworking. After watching this video i will sell all my tools and start knitting instead.
Bylga you don't have to do that. Plenty of experts out there to learn from, and put their methods into practice. Best to use your common sense. Remember, if it feels unsafe, it probably is unsafe.
Don't let that stop you. I almost lost my hand years ago on a table saw,I got lucky and only suffered lost of feeling in my right hand ,a pretty nice scar and a lesson I learned. Just take your time and always pay attention ,plus ... don't drink a 12pk before doing any work...that was my problem 😃.
Just don't leave the knitting needle on any place a person would sit down!
I've seen first hand how my uncle came home from work, went to the couch and sat down.. Only to be pierced by a knitting needle that went all the way in.
Every day objects can be quite dangerous if left where they shouldn't be.
This video is so perfect because you sound like you know exactly what you're talking about, that you're well experienced. Yet, even with that experience and full knowledge, you show how out of control that sort of situation is. It illustrates it perfectly.

You're not an idiot glad you didnt get hurt. This video had to be made and hopefuly it will scare many people. I remember back in school we had to watch a video of someones hand getting mangled before we were allowed to use the table saw.

Was it stupid? Yeah probably. But to be honest, this video pretty much woke me up to the dangers involved in using power tools. They aren't toys. I've had to repeatedly ask my wife to treat my tools with respect because they can seriously injure someone. I will most definitely be showing her this video to let her know that my overly cautious attitude is valid. Thanks for this.

I told my dad I'm interested in taking up woodworking and the first thing he said was something about kickback on a table saw spooking him real bad years ago. I didn't know what that meant but I made a mental note to look it up. I sure am glad I found this video. I wonder how many fingers this guy has saved.

Holy crap, very glad I came across this video. Just picked up a table saw from my father in law who said he doesn't use the blade guard because "it just gets in the way and more of a pain in the ass than it's worth."
It's easy to say that about angle grinder guards too, until you have a disc explode. Don't remove the guard from your angle grinder!

Exactly! 90% of the instructions come down to limiting the liability of the manufacturer. Do not suffocate children with a plastic bag, do not jump with a saw into a tub full of water. Ok thanks, that's what common sense tells me. But common sense has no knowledge of saws and instructions would help me a lot. Luckily there is a gentleman who recorded this video 😎

I have no problems admitting that I don't know much about carpentry. First off I'll say I learned something I didn't know. I have a table saw that my parents bought for me and I've only used it a couple times. The purpose of the riving knife was a bit of a mystery to me until now. Thank you for that.

I've been using table saws for almost 20 years now and always think I'm keeping up my guard. I had a kickback a few weeks ago but thankfully was standing to the side of it. Watching this video is a VERY good reset button, and something I'll force myself to watch every season. Thanks for making it, regardless of any haters....good job.

Brings back bad memories!! Retired flooring contractor, was literally making my last cut on job with new blade. To this day have no idea what I did wrong. The very second I touched 3/4 inch oak to blade it kicked back taking three fingers with it. Luckily all the blade did was chew the fingers on my left hand, Mr. Pointy was badly chewed, they just taped it together, Mr Birdy and his neighbor had 16 stitches. Be glad you weren't standing behind saw, otherwise you could have been talking with a very high voice. Lol just subscribed love your presentation

Wholly crap, I cut my thumb off 40 years ago with a skill saw kick back, And this brought back all kinds of memories. It happens so damn fast. Luckily my doctor who was missing three fingers from a jointer accident sewed it back on. I just lost the movement of my second joint. I'm really glad you're okay partner and I hope you save lots of other people's fingers.

Jeezus! I’m glad you’re okay to show people a table saw is no joke.
I was 17 working in my in-laws cabinet shop. I pushed a piece of wood through with another short piece of wood. It shot out the piece of wood I was holding and my finger hit the blade-with a sound of a high “tinnng”. Industrial grade saw. It knocked by hand up and above my head but a lot of that was fear to look at my hand...
...the blade knicked my fingerNAIL!!
“Just the tip” of my nail, no flesh. Table saws earned my total respect that day.

This video should be mandatory to watch when buying a table saw. All manufacturers should print this URL on paper and make sure it's the first thing people see when they open the box. That was seriously close and I'm glad your fingers live to woodwork another day!

I do not own a table saw, nor I am a woodworker. I sometimes fix stuff around the house/garage/garden with the help of power tools. I heard the term kickback a few times in some CZcams videos I use to educate myself, but never ever any of them made it clear how bad it is until I saw that piece of wood flying across the shop and the damage on that push block. Thank you sir for this demonstration video, I hope it will help many woodworkers keep all their fingers. Please keep yours safe as well.
This was filmed 10 yrs ago... nowadays we can make computer animations to demonstrate this kinda stuff. This guy was brave trying to help people and educate people.

They should sell every table saw with a link to this video. I think they put so many cautions and warnings on trivial things these days that people usually don't know the ones that actually matter.

I've had exactly one of those in fifty years of woodworking. I absolutely stand behind the admonition to always use a guard or riving knife... and I'd rather that it be a full-up guard with pawls. In the modern shop, there are no good excuses to leave the guard off the saw. None. Zero. You do NOT need to watch the cut. There is no cut you ever need to make on a table saw that will require the removal of the guard.
Sheesh! And this is an experienced guy with more than a few miles on him, and he knows it’s coming, and still just barely got to keep his finger!

I remember seeing this video years ago and it making me terrified of using a table saw.
Now all these years later, having become a fully qualified carpenter and worked with power tools for years, i'm still terrified of table saws and avoid them at all costs.
Kickbacks are certainly harder with a riving knife but having dealt with woodworkers for over 30 years I would never say never. People seem to come up with inventive ways to do things wrong and might be able to overcome a riving knife somehow. You always have to pay attention to what you are doing regardless of the safety equipment being used.

First, I'm glad you were not injured. Second, I was in JR. High Shop Class when i turned around and noticed a fellow student using a table saw with no push stick, i was just about to yell "Stop" when i saw his finger go flying. They were able to save the finger but i felt really bad that i didn't catch it quicker. Being from a rural area, i've been using power tools since i was 10 (with supervision) and i am still amazed at what people do around these tools. Another example, I'm an Offset Pressman by trade, and you NEVER, NEVER wear your hair long, you keep it up and under a hat. I watched a young lady walk by a running press and get a 5inch long by 4 inch wide strip of her scalp and hair removed by the ink rollers. To this day i don't get why it's so hard to follow safety protocols.
