    Yup....we in Malaysia we Chinese also celebrate moon cake festival just like in China.
    Here we also have plenty of choices to choose from. We have a fairly large population of Chinese here..

    According to your boyfriend's tastes, I think he would like the Cantonese style mooncakes more. They are softer and sweeter. He should like 豆沙(red bean paste), 枣泥(dates paste), 椰蓉(coconut), etc.

      Agree with this. Come to Malaysia for some Cantonese mooncakes - the soft pastry types (needs refrigeration). I think he'll even like the durian ones here.

    Since it is only once a year, you cannot go cheap on the mooncakes. I used to shop for the cheaper ones but now I always get the expensive traditional kind. Even if it is expensive but it is worth it.

    I remember our video trying the fancy moon cakes last year. We had a number of varieties too. I think Bella liked them best! I’ll have to rewatch the video to remind myself.

    We have mochi skin (snow skin) moon cakes with many different types of fillings, usually a paste. You need a tea to go with this as well.

    We need a more comprehensive review on Mid Autumn Festival, maybe some other traditional foods other than mooncake? The shining moon would make for good b-roll if you have the camera for that :)

    Haha, True true, Wuren moon cake is a super traditional one and we didn't like it when we were kids. And nowadays, it becomes popular again for some reason and it really bring us the memory of childhood and hometown. Very fun video!! Like it very much! 谢谢 Blondie!

    I am from Hong Kong and living overseas. When I was young, we would walk in the neighborhood at night with friends each carrying a candle lit paper lantern. It was magical and fun. Missed the good old days.

      yeah lots of childhood bad memories of burn out lanterns when nobody ever explained how to avoid it. A burning bunny lantern is enough to set off smoke alarms these days.

    You really should try some big Chinese bakery brand. Strongly recommend Meixin /Maxim Moon cake. It’s a Hong Kong brand and makes the Cantonese moon cake. Delicious! 🤗

    There's other types of mooncakes than ones with baked brown shells. Different regions and localities all over China has their own versions. Shanghai area has a flaky pastry type. There's many more types with different shells and fillings, sweet or savory. There's no "traditional" ones as you stated, but what's traditional to the different areas in China.

    You should try this brand. 香港美心月饼 (Hong Kong meixin Mooncake) both the original double yolk lotus and the lava edition. It’s really really different. I like the custard one. It’s really really good. 🥰

    Happy Chinese Mid Autumn Festival,the most important thing is to be with the family as the full moon implies.Even if you are abroad in a different country alone,When you look at the moon your loved ones will be looking at the same moon and your thoughts and love are connected by it(but we do have facetime and wechat now so just call them to show your love unlike the ancient Chinese)

      I was offered one last night but it was rather frozen... so it tasted like an ice block. I have had thawed one and it was rather nice when served properly.

    35 rmb, cheap af, my local homemade shop sells about 45rmb for the vegetarian one and 50 for regular one 60 for yolk one, 80 for the five beans with yolk

    In Indonesia, mooncakes for sale in packs are only activated for giving, but for self-mealing, there is a subscription that makes them, the taste is much better

    Not sure if that's correct but the lotus with salted egg seem low quality when I see Amy cut it. I just ate one lotus with salted egg. Another thing is mooncake made by western company is incomparable to traditional company that produce mooncake.

    As a Chinese Australian I don't like the traditional wuyue or salted egg fillings. I prefer red bean, matcha, black sesame and fruit fillings. Also I like the Shanghai xianrouyuebing which is hot and savoury with meat inside and a flaky pastry.

    For our family it has to be salted egg with lotus paste (white or brown), Cantonese flavour and nothing else. We tried many fancy styles and never liked them. The 2-yolk and lotus in Sydney is over $60 per tin (4 pieces) this year, getting more and more expensive.

    On the other hand, I prefer eating snow skin mooncakes (冰皮月餅) than traditional ones as you have too. 🥮

    LOL can't blame you for falling into the Häagen-Dazs trap just this once for the festival video. Like many other foreign brands, after entering the Chinese market, they suddenly became a higher end brands when they're just common mid-low level brands back home. Häagen-Dazs is not really selling a product, they're more like selling a luxury sense and experience. Similar brands include Pizza Hut, Tim Hortons etc.

    Like Easter eggs, it will be half priced after the festivals. Also tins of moon cakes used to be the great swapping gift game where I may have 10 tins from different friends and you would try to give them away and pretend that you bought it just for them. If you are really unlucky someone could pass you last year's stock.
    For western taste a chocholate fudge filling should be quite acceptable.

    I am not a fan of those types of mooncake 🥮, but my favourite one are the 蘇式月餅 style。They are more famous in the area of 江南 Jiangnan including Shanghai。The filling is mostly sweet, it has sesame paste, or red bean paste, lotus paste, some include eggs. My favourite ones are the 鮮肉月餅 pork mooncake very popular in Shanghai. You should try it next time, I am sure you’ll like it.

    Just noticed that CGTN has been conducting an online survey on CZcams to find out the most favoorite mooncake flavor. It started one day ago and the results are :
    49% Salted egg yolk
    21% Red Bean paste
    12% Meat stuffed

    My favourite is the white lotus root with double salted egg yolk. I did try a cheescaked moon cake recently that was crazy good too.
