Why Wasn't the British Empire Ruled by A British Emperor? (Short Animated Documentary)

- Most empires are ruled by Emperors yet one of the notable exceptions was the British Empire which was led only by either Kings or Queens. And given that much smaller empires like that of the German or Austro-Hungarian Empires were run by emperors it makes sense to ask why the largest empire ever was not. To find out why watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

Should be noted that the German Emperor was titled as just that. "German Emperor" rather than "Emperor of Germany". This was a specific decision by Bismarck to not offend the Austrians, as "Emperor of Germany" would imply total sovereignty over all germans rather than just the nation-state

At Wilhelm's inauguration, the announcer purposely avoided this problem by proclaiming him as "Kaiser Wilhelm" (without any further title).
Another reason Victoria wanted to be an emperor is because her daughter married the crown prince of Germany, and so would eventually be the empress of Germany, and thought it would be embarrassing for her to be outranked by her own daughter

Yep, the State terrorists shooting-to-kill at most-likely the-Irish or Kiwīs 'cus unlike the understanding of human-rights advocacy organisations in the here-&-now: It all starts going downhill since 1:06!
That basically sums up entire british history
It was mentioned slightly during this video but not very concretely: An Emperor is simply needed where Kings have to be governed over. The Byzantine Emperor existed because he saw himself as a formal King of those Kings who ruled a part of the former Roman Empire. The Austria-Hungarian Empire was simply a nation consisting of multiple nations, one with a King. If you have to outrank this King: An Emperor is needed. The most popular example for this system is the German Empire. There were dozens of Kings in this realm. The German Emperor had to be an Emperor - otherwise he would have never been the head of a nation with multiple Kings. Great Britain never had this issue in the first place. That made the rank slightly idiotic.
Then you have France, where the title of Emperor of the French was meant to imply that Napoleon was the leader of the French people but did not own France as the French kings had under feudalism. Similarly, the title of Roman Emperor was at first supposed to indicate the leader of the Roman Republic, and the emperors preferred not to be associated with the kings of Rome who had ruled it before it was a republic.
And as I mentioned in another comment, the word "emperor" itself comes from the Latin _imperator_ -- literally, "commander". In the Roman Republic, an _imperator_ was someone who'd been given _imperium,_ official command/authority over a particular military or government entity. Later, it became a "victory title" given to military commanders; Julius Caesar himself got it this way. From Augustus on, the emperors co-opted it as one of their multiple totally-not-a-king titles (alongside _Caesar_ and _princeps_ ("first") and such) to bolster their own authority.
Notably, though, he was never the Emperor of Germany, but the German Emperor, which meant that he was technically _primus inter pares_ , the first amongst equals. As the King of Prussia, he, in theory at least, simply held the highest status of the kings.
Further worth mentioning is that, despite being declared "Dictator for life" Julius Caesar never adopted the title of "emperor". That being said, while the emperors that followed him shied away from being associated with kings; Caesar to the contrary wanted to become king really badly. To the point that he started wearing purple all the time and had a big gold encrusted chair installed at the front of the senate just for him that was definitely not a throne winky face. But we all know how that ended. His dreams of monarchy died in a pool of blood on the senate floor.
Slight correction: the German empire only had 4 kingdoms: Württemberg, Prussia, Bavaria and Saxony. There were 2 dozen monarchs in total, as there were multiple Grand Duchies, Duchies and Counties but only 4 Kings
Uk: India you are my most prestigious colony therefore i grant you a privilege no other british territory will ever have
India: Wow what privilege?
Uk: Having an absolute monarch
Having an absolute monarch who won't even be running the show
"But I will now assume that it was right; and if it was right, gentlemen, I call upon you to agree with me in this, that in order to complete the transaction, that assumption of a higher title ought to have been accompanied, in the face of the vast Indian people, by increase in franchise or of privilege, by augmentation of benefit, by redress of grievances and correction of abuse. Is that the course of government, which has since been pursued in India?”- William Gladstone on why making Victoria an Empress was “theatrical bombast and folly” .

Also part of the reason was that Victoria's eldest daughter Vicky had married the heir to the German Empire and she didn't like the idea of her daughter having an imperial title when she didn't
I like how queen Victoria was scared of being seen as an inferior by the other monarchs when probably her kingdom was the most powerful of Europe

As was stated in the video.
It was actually Gladstone who refused Disraeli's proposal to make her empress because the uk is a constitutional monarchy and emperors don't fit such a system
The people from India were asked if they accept her as their empress, and fun fact : no, they were not, because they didn't matter.
@@kelvinkersey5058 It's funny as there was precedent to argue against this bias. Also, declaring oneself as “Emperor” was a matter of being recognised as such by other countries. Prior to Napoleon, the title of Emperor in Europe was strongly associated with the Holy Roman Empire. For this reason, to be recognised as “Emperor” you had to be (theoretically) elected, rather than just declaring yourself one (in practice the Habsburgs just used their influence to get themselves elected each time). Nevertheless, Spain is a good example of this particularity of European imperial dignity: while Charles V was indeed called Emperor in Spain (as Charles I) after his election as Holy Roman Emperor, his heir was only considered king (King Phillip II), since he wasn’t the Habsburg who ruled in the German territories. This tradition persisted until Napoleon, and afterwards the title of emperor was used more freely, such as with Napoleon III, the emperors of Brazil and Mexico (outside Europe, but still held by Europeans) or the creation of the German Empire.
Say that to Brazil and there first emperor.
Well, this isn’t entirely true, since Peter the Great, technically Peter I proclaimed himself Emperor of Russia
@Neptune's Daddy That's also why Austria declared itself to be an Empire. The Austrian king had previously been Emperor of the HRE, and when he saw the writing on the wall, he abdicated but still wanted to be an emperor, so he just declared Austria to be an empire instead. Which kinda makes more sense really as Austria was a multiethnic empire whereas the HRE was by then essentially the German nation (granted a nation in spirit, certainly not a unified state).
@@Edmonton-of2ec Why Peter II ? Wasn't he First of His Name?

(You're top of your class) Today, the country only has over 5 Million people.. Back when the 'rights' were given there were far less people there. It was less of a right and more of a 'Need' to have more people to have a say...
However, I don't understand what the wars have to do with the population? I'm British not Australian.. Your point is lost. But my understanding with that is in WWII the Japanese preferred the Australian mainland not New Zealand's..
I'd highly imagine that if the Japanese were attacking New Zealand they'd have asked for help just the same?
And WWI we were the ones that actually asked for both Aussie and Kiwi help, as well as the rest of our former colonies in both the western front and in the Gallipoli campaigns? You can engage in nationalistic historical revisionism all you want; but it doesn't change the fact that the Kiwis were just as desperate for help as the Aussies were after the Singapore Strategy failed and the Japanese came pouring into the southern pacific.

Though there could only theoretically be one Emperor in the world at the time, the title was claimed by Charlemagne and his successors in the Holy Roman Empire and the rulers of the Byzantine Empire. Plot Twist: Britain did and does have a secret emperor - James Bizzinette.
'Liberal' politicians: 'Conquering and ruling over people is all well and good, but we draw the line at you calling yourself an emperor.'
Smh libs
Every Country we conquered where piss poor, We brought technology practily everything, we made these Country's richer by building railway's ect The British only really taxed it's Colony's like it would tax the British people. It's no coincidence that Commonwealth Country's ( ex colony's) have alll decent Economys when there neighbors are mostly 3rd world Countrys. Also mostly all these Colony's still hold Queen Elizabeth as Head of State, Even though she just reigns but doesn't actually Rule. Country's we Conquered actual to this very day fight for the British Army. The Gurkhas of Nepal is one such who have fought for the British for Centuries. Very fierce warriors I'm glad we have Warriors like the feared Gurkhas in the British Army.
Thats just the imperialist mindset at the time in all of Europe. Fair play was only something to consider when dealing with fellow imperialist powers. That kind of thinking was basicly universal, no matter what your political view in regard of your home territories were.
@no or maybe yes surprising how uneducated people may think that colonialism was a good thing for the colonised, skipping the whole "famine, genocide, slavery" thing by saying "at least they made railroad... and christianity.. yeh!! "

As the video points out, Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom had the potentially awkward position of being at the same time the head of state of the most powerful country on earth at the time and holding a title that was outranked by other monarchs on the European continent (Austria, Russia, France (for a time) and, later, Germany) who held the title of emperor. The awkwardness was compounded by the fact that, in due course, she would have a daughter (also named Victoria) and a grandson (William / Wilhelm) who would be respectively empress-consort and emperor of the newly-unified Germany. And having the ‘Grandmother of Europe’ curtsy to her own descendants because of a point of protocol would never do! Ultimately, it was the then-PM, Disraeli, who navigated the problem brilliantly by suggesting that Victoria become Empress - of India. This gave the Queen the title she wanted and solved the protocol problem but avoided the problem of the British distaste at having an ‘Emperor’ / ‘Empress’ rule over them. This was achieved at the expense of the people of India, who had no say in the matter.
thanks, that was interesting!
"Britain was a nation of nations which were all equal."
Wales: Why isn't our flag part of the Union Jack, then?
*Angry Welshman Noises*
"in theory"
*Cries in Kernow*
Because we chose a dragon instead of a cross, our cool flag came at a cost
England: Shut up, dislexican nerd.
1:17 A perfect summary of English/Scottish relations
"But when push, comes to shove, I will send a fully armed battalion to remind you of my love!" -George III
It wasn’t that Victoria felt inferior, it was that her daughter married the future German Emperor and thus would outrank her that brought about the title of Empress of India.
Your artistic depiction of MK Gandhi at 2:36 - hilarious!
Also, 2:12 “They don’t mind” haha we do though...
WE didn't , Nobody cared in 1800s who the fk was Emperor , all we knew that local leaders are under British
I like how Charles I appears near the end every time you mention his name, pretty cool
I approve of this message
Well, God save the emperor sounds weird
Then: that the Emperor save you!!
And imagine the song ‘God save our Gracious *EMPRESS* would just not do
if history were different, you'd all grow up to think its normal lol
Well there is God Save The Tsar and God Save The Kaiser, so not at all.
@@srash8854 Yeah, but singing God save our gracious emperor, long live our gracious emperor, just sounds weird
History Matters: It would be wierd for an emperor to owe allegiance to another emperor.
William of Normandy: Does it really matter?
The dry humour in these videos is honestly top class
" extreme allergic reaction to absolute monarchy, " I can't get enough of that kind of humour
Yeah. The last absolute monarch came down with a fatal case of Being Executed.
That's a WHO-recognised illness/syndrome, Mr "@@elton1981"?
History Matters: Why Wasn't the British Empire Ruled by A British Emperor?
Me: Why indeed.
By the coincidence, I asked myself the same question a few days ago; good thing an answer exists.
Nice profile name, though, I received some nice PTSD.
It will be, once Charles ascends to the throne. Emperor Charles and Empress Camilla of the British Empire a.k.a. CANZUK. That sounds fantastic.
Haha very humble. Your signs and facial reactions are fantastic.
basically the Brits thought the title of "king of Britain" superceded the title of "emperor of the British empire".
as in "I rule the most high-brow place on earth.. oh and the unwashed rabble too..."
They probably feared severe backlash in case they angered James Bissonette with their vanity
What if the History Matters Channel is Actually Ruled by James Bisonett?

This topic ended up going a different way than I expected, but it was interesting!
It'd be really cool to see you make a video on why Tannu Tuva wanted to be annexed by the Soviet Union
England: "We're a nation of equal nations!"
Wales, Scotland and Ireland: "Uh..."
England: "Shush."
I mean Britain was made by a scottish dynast
We are equal nations .

We are equal nations, but some are more equal than others. Oink. 🐽
not England, its pretty much the south east ruling everyone else.
This channel is too underrated.
It got 260k views in 10 hours. I think the channel is going fine.
amazing vid imo
Thanks that was cool
Allergen: Absolute Monarchies
Medication: Queen Elizabeth II
God save the Queen! (As long as she doesn't actually make us do anything)
Be happy you've got her. Over here, we've got a racist, loudmouthed tv game show host as our head of state...
@@ProjectEkerTest33 The problem of making the Queen more a celebrity than a Monarch would be that it would make the Queen look very weak.
@@FreedomLovingLoyalistOfficial Hmmmm I don't know about that. She's a bit like a glass cannon, very powerful but that power is fragile
I mean she can do all kinds of things like declare war, veto laws, she's head of the Commonwealth etc Also she's commander-in-chief and the army is sworn to be loyal to her. She's additionally immensely popular with the British populace of course. The problem is the moment she actually uses any of that power she becomes vulnerable to having it taken away.
She is in effect the last and most powerful safeguard against the goverment doing something immensely evil but if she did it for any lesser reason then the monarchy would be screwed. I personally think it's a good system.

Knowing the Roman aversion to kings, shrewd Octavius styled himself Augustus of First Citizen, with his only distinguishing mark being a purple stripe on his toga. Although his power was absolute, it maintained the charade of the emperor still being of the people. Augustus was the title used by all subsequent Roman Emperors.
And the word "emperor" itself comes from the Latin _imperator_ -- literally, "commander". In the Roman Republic, an _imperator_ was someone who'd been given _imperium,_ official authority over a particular military or government entity. Later, it became a "victory title" given to military commanders; Julius Caesar himself had gained it this way. From Augustus on, the emperors co-opted it as one of their multiple totally-not-a-king titles (alongside _Caesar_ and _princeps_ and such) to bolster their own authority.
Brilliant!
