Francis II first Rage quit in the middle of the game ever recorded in History
Literally HRE gaming.
Chat~ HRE: Dude wtf! this is such bull******
_HRE has left the game_
Tbf he copied Flavius Valentinianus, the true pioneer of rage quitting
I don't know why this one got me laughing for a long time
The brilliance of this comment.... _KINGS TO YOU EDMOND_ ...
It's absolutely amazing that a relic as old as the HRE existed at the same time as the United States.
As an American, I also find it remarkable! The very old and the very new, existing with one another for 30 years!
Or the Ottoman Empire surviving to the time of film.
Even today there are still medieval kingdoms: Saudi Arabia and Qatar for example
@@bennethoffmann1872 saudi arabia wasn't really saudi arabia, they only got to rule over so much of Arabia in the 20th century
@@bennethoffmann1872 Just mention England and France then.
The difference is that the HRE FEELS medieval, both because it no longer exists and because it's height of power was in medieval times.
Quick rectification: this makes it sound like Francis II did a Charles V and gave up all power to retire somewhere. He didn't. He'd created the title of Emperor of Austria and the Austrian Empire (made up of the Habsburg territories like Austria, Bohemia-Moravia and Hungary) in 1804. So essentially he gave up one useless title for one with actual power over the territory he cared about.
Interesting
Ahh that’s why they gave us Arnie!
That's right. Francis II knew that the Holy Roman Empire would not last much longer (all states were already part of the Confederation of the Rhine and only Prussia and Austria were still formally part of the HRE). And because Napoleon had himself crowned Emperor of the French in 1804, it was to be expected that he would soon be the only ruler with the title of Emperor in the western world, which Francis II could not accept. For this reason he formed the Austrian Empire in order to preserve the equality of rank with Napoleon as Emperor. Under pressure from Napoleon, he had to dissolve the HRE in 1806, making Austria and Prussia de facto sovereign states for the first time. From 1804 to 1806 Franz was the only double emperor in the world. As Francis II Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and as Francis I Emperor of Austria.
Both Napoleon and Francis killed the HRE so they could both proclaim themselves emperors of their own empires and reduce the former HRE to buffer states.
I like how all these empires in history were conquered in some dramatic fashion and for the HRE it's like "meh tbh I kinda wanted to die at that point, so I did."
@Абдульзефир Except it was, you're only looking at the HRE post Westphalia.
@Абдульзефир What does rebellion had to do with my comment? I'm arguing about your claim that the HRE was not an empire or unified, by your logic then the Roman Empire wasn't also an empire or unified considering they had many rebellions.
@پیاده نظام خان In that sense, the byzantine empire also wasn't an empire, because its vassals also constantly rebelled and feudalism n all that, as you put it. Learn some history yourself

@@dete31 Voltaire was a cringe philosopher
Good to note that Francis also elevated the various Hapsburg realms (Austria, Bohemia, Hungary...) into an empire of his own after Napoleon crowned himself emperor of the French. I imagine even he realized that his title over the HRE didn't mean anything at that point and that he might as well create a new legit empire out of the land he had actual direct rule over.
Sucks that he then found himself at the head of a multiethnic state just when nationalism really started picking up...
To be fair, he didn’t really have to deal with that as much as the next rulers. Ferdinand I had abdicated during 1848 due to the riots and revolutions, and then Fraz Joseph’s entire rule was pretty much dealing with those Ethnic Minorities.
0:45 I love the fact that while you reused the same map from “Why did Napoleon invade Russia?” you corrected it by colouring Venice as part of Austria (before the battle of Austerlitz gave it to France of course). Amazing attention to detail :)

About the last point though: nobody wanted the HRE's crown in its current state at the time. But they did want to continue the idea of a German Empire. That's what was officially stated in 1848/49. And even when William I of Prussia took on his new title as German Emperor he did so in direct reference to the HRE. They also attempted to get the actual physical crown kept in Vienna but the Habsburgs had no interest giving it to them so they went ahead without it but designed a new crown that looked remarkably similar.

The assassination of Tsar Paul I?
The two bombardments of Copenhagen by Britain?
Maybe a video on Bernadotte becoming ruler of Sweden and the political shenanigans of aligning himself against Napoleon?
A video about the trial of Louis XVI, being convicted of treason and executed?
A video about the breakup of Denmark and Norway? ((I am unsure how this relates to the broader political, military and economic struggle of the Napoleonic era, but I believe this happens within the Napoleonic Wars.))
There is so much that happens during and leading up to the Napoleonic Wars and yet it tends to be discussed in broad general strokes.

I just love the way he summarizes the entire history of the empire.
Just one precision about a mistake often being made when talking about Napoleon : He did not declare a SINGLE war. Yes, you read well. All the wars were declared either by the British, the Prussians, the Austrians or the Russians. (Althoug in the end it kinda was all Britain since they just payed countries to fight for them). If you don't believe it just check all the coalition wars and you will see that France mostly defended itself. The fact is the neighbouring countries were simply too afraid of the revolutionary ideas that were continued by Napoleon (another misconception : Napoleon did end the first French republic but kept most of its new administrative and civil law aspects) and he perpetuated the individual freedoms obtained through the revolution with the obvious exception of democratic rights.
All of this to say that portraying him as a malevolent conquest thirsty tyrant is a bit incorrect. He was perhaps a tyrant in France but the conquests he performed during his reign were reactional, and when Britain/Pussia/Austria declare war upon you five times in a row in spite of just having signed a peace treaty you start wanting to permanently hamper their hability to attack you.
Well Revolutionary France did start everything by declaring war on all of Europe, but that happened years before Napoleon was even in charge. But what you said was true, Napoleon himself was only reacting to a hostile Europe who didn’t want this nobody who crowned himself Emperor and the revolutionary ideas he brought with him.
I've seen a lot of revisionist history, but, please, don't try to sell Napoleon as a pacifist, or worse, a victim.
@@michaelbayer5094 Well, it’s complicated. Napoleon was far from a pacifist, and he was the “victim” of European aggression. Yet, he never sought the peaceful solution, like ever, he kept fighting battles instead of seeking peaceful resolutions.
@@michaelbayer5094 Is reading comprehension a luxury these days?
@@ng.tr.s.p.1254 No, but apparently inference is a lost skill. Chainsaw understood my point. Without any snark, BRW. What's your complaint? Because it's not clear.
It's remarkable how Napoleon ended some of the oldest states in Europe to shake things up.
His other famous victim was the Republic of Venice which too was milennia old by that time.
well put
I want you to know I’m having my daughter watch these. She’s 1 and a 1/2 and loves cartoons. I think she’s learning something! Love these keep making them!
Um, these videos are definitely not designed for 1 1/2 year old children. You should seriously give her something else to watch (or at least I hope you did)
Yeah she watches Mickey Mouse, My Little Pony, Bluey, Dinosaurs Ranch, etc. I through one of these in a week cause they’re educational. Never watched documentaries, or educational stuff with your dad? Sheesh. No cursing, no sexual content, no violent content, no bad language…. I fail to see the issue. Everyone wants to tell you how to raise your kids.
@@stepheningram6415 It's just that a 1 1/2 year old probably will not understand anything at all from the video, let's be real, and in that case you are essentially showing her something completely incomprehensible. I don't have any problem with showing documentaries to kids, give her anything to watch that she can actually comfortably follow and enjoy. I am not telling you how to parent your kid it is just a reasonable conclusion I came to
Better question would be how did it last so long?
Because until 1648, when the treaty of westphalia came around and essentially turned the emperor a figurehead, the empire was a functioning state and a great power. After that, the only thing keeping the thing together was the fear of the small states to be swallowed up by their neighbours, and so they remained under the overlordship of austria and its armies.
